Ryley, who stepped down from Sky News in May after 17 years in charge, urged colleagues to “start reporting on the royal family with the same rigour as they treat every story on the news agenda”

How interesting @Novella4
If only

I just think a lot of the British public just sleepwalk through life questioning nothing. They must do because there wouldn't be such fanatical love of a family who happen to be so privileged because of who gave birth to them.
They're just flawed ordinary human beings just like us. Nothing special at all

Yep have the king and heir there because we have to and nothing will change but the rest of them should be slimmed down or cut out
Let's not forget Charles is worth over two billion, he can afford to re-arrange his extended family

The former head of Sky news is calling for the UK press to cease being so ‘supine’ re the ‘royals’

The entire Windsor edifice has only hobbled into the 21st century due to a compliant ‘press’ - the so called rota do not ask any proper questions
Anyone see the video where a reporter politely asked for Charles’ view on Andrew being stripped of his ‘honours’
Totally ignored of course and it was close quarters- but more importantly flowed by enraged calls and emails- how DARE anyone question Charlie ?

The Windors have grown hugely wealthy on tax payer funds ( Victoria was in debt) and special exclusions from tax that the rest of us pay .
Those who don’t question this are in the wrong.

Yes. They are not subject to elections. They are just there by dint of birth, which means they should be kept in check by the press, Parliament and the courts. But they are not, by Parliament, who let's them exempt themselves from legislation, courts who allow them to hide their assets and and a sycophantic press who allow them to hide and distract whenever they want to hide a story away. All these people should be working for us, including the Royals.
And speaking of Queen Victoria, the reason why Sandringham and Balmoral are privately owned by the Monarch ( yet not subject to inheritance tax) is because she held out the begging bowl to Parliament, then surprisingly found enough money to buy two private family estates down the back of the sofa. The Windsors want to be Kings. They need to accept proper scrutiny if they want that privilege.

Yep, seriously rattled 😁

Clearly, he's doing very well judging on the seriously rattled response.

Good for him.

Novella4 · 21/09/2023 15:07

@MrsFinkelstein

Keep telling yourself that if it helps

Novella4 · 21/09/2023 15:22

I don’t have time at the moment but I’d be interested to look at the timing of the change from the civil list to the sovereign grant . Done by Tories the of course. I wonder wurst public feeling was at the time .

Yes it resulted in an increase in tax payer money handed to the Windsors but I think the more important change was there was no more parliamentary debate when the Windsors came cap in hand for an increase in the Civil list

So many people are easily led by tabloid propaganda and that effect would be lessened if Civil List increases were debated in parliament

It’s all even more smoke and mirrors now.

Re the environment, I’ve heard Republic has environmentalists calculating the Windsors carbon footprint. They are volunteers - what a baffling concept that will be to the Windsors .

Willy is in New York for the same reason the OP put this thread in ‘royal’ family and not in the climate change section , to attempt to bolster support for Willy

As Bill Gates remarked - it could all have been done on teams .

I read that Willy and Kate have 60 staff- admittedly 59 of them are busy searching for Willy’s personality - but if any read these threads - tone down the overwrought PR.

Most people know green washing when they see it and your key demographic (66+) is mainly irritated by green issues

I imagine Harry's presence at the IG could have been beamed "live from Montecito" too? Same thing.

😅😅😅

Rather impossible given he was in multiple different venues daily for seven days!

I think you have misunderstood. Think about it as opposed to jumping in with a quick response.

Roussette · 21/09/2023 16:54

I haven't misunderstood and there's no need to scold me like a teacher! 😅

jeffgoldblum · 21/09/2023 17:05

I believe @LastHives , was making the point that William also had multiple visits .

I see on the news PW has flown to Singapore. They said that has been offset.
what does that mean?

Serenster · 05/11/2023 18:16

The carbon emissions from the flight have been offset by a separate green initiative, Samcro.

Samcro · 05/11/2023 18:49

I wish I understood.

queentim · 05/11/2023 18:57

It's an initiative by airline companies whereby when you emit 1000 lbs of CO2 by flying, you can volunteer tonpay £24 to the airline so they can claim to plant a tree somewhere or invest in renewable energies somewhere else.

Nice in theory for consumers but some climate experts and scientists say it's nonsense/exaggerated

Samcro · 05/11/2023 19:06

@queentim thanks
sounds daft , wouldn’t it be better not to make needles plane journeys
(easy for me to say as I haven’t flown since I was 20)

queentim · 05/11/2023 19:16

I agree @Samcro ,we'd need to actually see where and how those funds are being spent to believe it. Kudos to them if following through though, but it's going to take several generations

themessygarden · 05/11/2023 19:57

Carbon Offset is also what private jet users use to justify flying private. Elton John defended H&M use of private jet travel by announcing he offset the carbon emissions.

Sir Elton John has defended the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's use of private jets - and said he paid to carbon offset their trip to his French home.

Carbon offsetting is pretty commonplace now. I've been asked if I wanted to fully or partly carbon offset with every flight I've bought recently.

It's not a perfect solution, but as PW said about Earthshot it's about everyone helping to try to repair the planet and limit further damage within the global lifestyle we lead. People will continue to travel - we need solutions to negate that - carbon offsetting is but 1 initiative.

Ineedwinenow · 05/11/2023 20:22

At least they are doing something, I fly often and also get ask about offsetting! It’s a normal practise and not just for the wealthy!!!!

Glad William got a great reception, I’m really looking forward to hearing from all the nominees 🤩

themessygarden · 05/11/2023 20:29

Yes, I fly regularly too and get asked to pay extra for offsetting, I rarely do pay it, but I really should reconsider.

pilates · 06/11/2023 08:07

I do find it amusing carbon footprint is brought up when the royals carry out their duties but it’s acceptable for others. I just wonder how the heir to the throne is supposed to get to Singapore safely for Earthshot 🤨Anyway I am sure he will do a grand job.

Mylovelygreendress · 06/11/2023 09:28

Lovely to see him receive such a warm welcome with large crowds greeting him .

I asked because it seems odd to travel so far to lecture about saving the planet. if feel the same about it if H&M do it. (anyone really)
