Ooh Jacintha Ardern, Bill Gates & Caroline Kennedy! Great guest list!

MrsFinkelstein · 13/09/2023 07:44

Very good guest list.

I liked that they visited Câr-Y-Môr seaweed farm when they were in Wales recently, Notpla who won an Earthshot prize last year is a key investor in the farm.

Serenster · 13/09/2023 10:00

I see they will be announcing the nominees for this years awards too. I am really interested in that - I have found the awards great at demonstrating the entrepreneurship that is going on in this sector.

MamoruHisaishi · 13/09/2023 11:11

Yup, with the issue of climate change being one of, if not the biggest issue that we’re facing today, I’m glad that this event is highlighting the need for more ways to save the planet and giving funds to the people who are coming up with solutions to address climate change. I’m looking forward to finding out this year’s nominees and the work that they’re doing, and also the awards show itself.

ARE YOU ALL RIGHT OP?

ILikeDinosaurs · 13/09/2023 15:06

Last year the 'important' people ie celebs flew around the world to be on stage while the actual winners attended on zoom. So many things wrong with that one! I hope they give it more thought this time.

Serenster · 13/09/2023 16:01

You mean fly around 60 people unnecesssrily to Singapore rather than let them attend the ceremony virtually with their communities and colleagues? I hope they don’t change that actually.

By the time they get up Singapore the winners of last years prizes will have attended events in both the UK and US to help them expand and enhance their businesses in addition to reviving their prize money. I think that’s a far better use of air miles than them all attending the ceremony last year.

Do the winners even care if they attend in person at all? I think the idea of getting the money as well as the on going support from rich philanthropists is what matters to them the most to continue on with their work. I don’t see why this is such an issue. The celebrities attending these awards garner attention from the public and in turn, the people whose work matters gain benefit from the attention given to them.

It was stupid to have celebs flying to an event in the name of saving the planet lol. Surely anyone can see that. And yet at the same time insulting to the actual winners who were told to stay at home. Why was that? If there's going to be a physical event and you're one of the winners it's not unreasonable to expect to be at that event to receive your prize. Perhaps W just wanted to be seen hobnobbing with celebrities only, not the 'regular' people doing the work.
Anyway the whole thing should have been online only, you know, in keeping with its stated values, to solve climate change? The whole thing reeks of stupidity, hypocrisy and/or poor planning.

Just reminding you that it was literally just a couple of weeks ago that people were utterly furious at William for not flying to Australia to support a big event for an organisation of which he was patron….

Exactly. You might find the whole idea stupid Ilikedinosaurs, but to the people who matter I.e the finalists/winners and the work that they do to save the climate and the people who are experiencing the worst effects of climate change, this is a chance for them to be able to make a difference on a bigger scale thanks to the support and funds that will be given to them from the earthshot prize. I'm glad that the likes of Bill Gates, Jacinta Ardern and Caroline Kennedy and other various famous celebrities and philanthropists and politicians are giving this the importance it deserves.

People were angry at William for not flying because it was the women's team. If it was the men's there is no question that he would be there and CC would not even be in the equation as he is president of the FA. When it's the women's all of a sudden he's remembered climate change?

It doesn't tally with this event, which is ABOUT climate change, that people are flying around the world?! This time to Singapore. It's actually shitting on the actual winners' efforts that the others are using up their carbon footprint for this, possibly even using their private jets..). It seems to me that either they should ALL be at a physical event (which would be bad planning anyway IMO) or NONE of them should be.

ILikeDinosaurs · 14/09/2023 11:05

I don't find the idea stupid @MamoruHisaishi, it's the execution. But I think you know that.

This is all complete speculation by you, though.

As I replied to you before on this...

Commercial

So if William flies commercial to Singapore, then no problem?

Roussette · 14/09/2023 11:45

I bet he won't.

Serenster · 14/09/2023 11:47

He flew commercial to the awards last year.

cobicat · 14/09/2023 11:49

I bet he won't.

As the heir to the throne and an IPP, I personally would not expect William to fly on a commercial flight.

He'll hardly be sat second seat in on the dreaded middle row of four on economy!

Re finalists in the audience at the awards show. It was clearly an operational decision made from the very beginning that the show would have all 15 finalists remote in their home locations.

The first Earthshot was 2021 in London so much of that early decision was made in the planning stages when the world was still in working out Covid and post Covid travel. For a while there was that situation with red zone countries needing 2 weeks of quarantine and some countries who were not letting their own citizens travel.

At the point they needed to create the set and plan the execution of the show they would not have known how travel etc would have worked out for the different finalists - I’m sure they considered options with some remote and some in the studio etc.

After the first show though it’s clear from an entertainment point that the remote option is much better - it’s more visually pleasing seeing the participants in their home environments.

It’s better for understanding the breadth and variety of the finalists themselves - from a single teenager, to a city, to a whole country.

And operationally it’s a very clean and efficient TV option for the award show format. You don’t have to have multi cameras on the same five boring ‘person sitting in seats’ shot and then all the waiting for the winner to walk down to the stage and then all the faffing about getting on and off the stage. It’s more enjoyable for the viewer.

The Earthshot organization then creates multiple in person networking opportunities for all 15 finalists not just the winners following the initial awards show - and not just that years winners - looks like they are continuing to support and showcase past participants too at the in person events.

Can't believe you're still not over him not flying to Australia. I would think that William flying commercial to support the earth shot prize initiative is a bigger deal and a far worthy cause than flying over to Australia to watch the football event. And he has been supportive of the women’s football team, which just isn't to your liking as to how he's supported them. Funny how you now seem to agree with the likes of piers Morgan. This event is a bigger deal than football.
