Just in terms of how the world learned that Harry was deployed to Afghanistan in 2008, it wasn’t released by the British Press. Australian gossip magazine New Idea (popularly known as “No Idea” 😀 ) was the first to publish the information, and it was then picked up and broadcast up the Drudge report in the US. That was what garnered the worldwide attention.
Harry was very well aware of this, as he wrote in Spare:
”An Australian magazine had picked up the story and told everyone that I was in Afghanistan. The magazine was inconsequential, so at first no one had noticed the story, until some [journalist] in the US read the article, posted it on his c*py website, and the trackers got hold of it.”
And, to be fair, Harry didn’t expressly claim that it was the British press that leaked his whereabouts. But he strongly implied that in his comment below (self evidently, the British press were not the only ones who knew he was there, New Idea found out themselves via an Aussie soldier who snapped a picture of Harry in camp):
'The whole reason I was allowed to go to Afghanistan in the first place was because it was kept a secret. While I was there for the ten weeks no one knew apart from the British press who said ''we'll keep quiet as long as we get access. To suddenly be on the way home I was angry. But it was important for everyone around me – their safety – to remove me.”
