Harry and Meghan make surprise phone calls to young leaders in the US

I actually really liked this video, it’s them doing what they have always done best. I want to see more things like this, hope it marks a change in tactics.

It also has a very “royal” feel: e.g. there have been recent reports about a split but they’re not arguing in the gutter they’re rising above it and proving them wrong, they’re using their spotlight to shine onto other people, etc.

Only criticism: why are they filming people on the phone?! Makes me think of The Apprentice 😂 use Zoom!!

Have you a word? Because I am always vexed by this.

I thought you’d reach for “haters” in those circumstances, Roussette. Am I wrong? 😉

we are not allowed to say haters. I use pro and non pro now. yet we get all kinds of abuse just because we don't think they are all bad.

We don't often agree I know, but your post is spot on! 👍

off to online shop for caramel and camel coloured clothes

Yep. In a nutshell. 😊

People are nuts when it comes to MM.

You are going by what the media says, not by what you actually know

I am going by their published manifesto in their own words of exactly what they wanted and how they intended to achieve it. But I suspect you know that.

And look what a mess it all is. The RF missed a trick here. Other Royals manage this sort of thing. Why were they not allowed to... it could've revived the Monarchy enormously.

B&E have jobs but do some royal duties and charitable works
M&Z exploit their royal status shamelessly
I don't know what E&S do, they are very under exposed, unfortunately for them.

calling people 'fans' is a way to dismiss their opinions.

I think the opinions were already dismissed long ago, and someone using these words (haters, fans, detractors, squad, royalist) are simply communicating to everyone else that they’ve already done so.

Others see it as someone leaving a powerful privileged and wealthy institution and telling his story about why he had to and what it's really like. What to some is gossip, to others is whistleblowing and exposing an archaic institution for the damaging outdated cult it is.

This is the biggest fiction peddled by both Meghan and her and their fans. They didn’t actually want to leave the wealth and privilege. They wanted a half-in, half out deal where they had access to all of that and could exploit it commercially for their own benefit. When they got told no, they then came up with the narrative that they had to leave. Plenty of us recall the history perfectly well and haven’t needed to rewrite it.

They wanted a half-in, half out deal where they had access to all of that and could exploit it commercially for their own benefit.

In fairness I much prefer where they had access to all of that and could exploit it commercially for their own benefit than the Windsors exploiting us and our taxes for their own benefit.

I much prefer it that way round.

Serenster · 04/08/2023 16:01

You use the word 'fans' in a derogatory way quite obviously

I think I use it in the fairly usual way - a person who likes and admires someone (or something) in a very enthusiastic way. I think it’s difficult to be a fan of someone and be objective at the same time - the two are a bit mutually exclusive.

I am a fan of Roger Federer (and not a fan of Novak Djokovic!) for example. This mean I bristled when a friend said that Roger’s “RF” logo and his Centre Court monogrammed tennis jackets were tacky. Objectively, they probably were. I didn’t want to hear it though.

And anyway it’s not like MM carried the show, she was the gf of the main guy

I used to watch it, I can’t say she was why I did. It got a bit samey though but it was quite popular as a show

agree. I was a Donna fan. the rachel character for me was not the main pull. good, but not as interesting as Donna. obviously thats not to say she didn't act well.

Iwantcakeeveryday · 04/08/2023 16:03

Harry was genuinely loved by the British public, he’s Diana’s son

No they were not. If you love someone, you do not buy tabloids that hunt them, hack their phones and harass them to a degree that causes them serious emotional harm. The press are vile, but who buys it? The British public never loved Harry, he served a purpose, that's all.

IamSTARVING · 04/08/2023 16:04

Serenster · 04/08/2023 15:47

The papers already wrote about their circumcisions, why aren't you angry at them? the amount of shit Harry gets for that here and none of it is directed at the press.

The Press are horrific, that’s a given, but Spare was a massive personal betrayal of trust by Harry of the confidential and private information that he only had because he was formerly a close and trusted family member.

The fact that he also expressly said that none of it might be terribly accurate, while making several damning allegations and recounting several conversations as if they were verbatim was I also thought a really unfair thing to do.

The family have form though - it is in his blood surely?

His mum did it.

His dad did it.

I can’t recall their names, there’s loads of seasons and we stopped earlier on but I loved the female black boss, she was fierce and her clothes were fantastic

Iwantcakeeveryday · 04/08/2023 16:06

royalist- isn't that a term that royalists use themselves though @AliceOlive ? It's an institution that is loved in a similar way to religious figures and I thought royalist was a term that people take on themselves.

themessygarden · 04/08/2023 15:56

I really doubt that a Charles, William, Catherine or Camilla book/docu series would sell like that.

To be honest, I* *think a William book, warts and all, would totally eclipse Harrys' book.

To be honest I don't think it would.

But he does not need to write a book because he gets well looked after by the State.

But I'm not a fan of anyone. Makes me sound like a teenager drooling over David Cassidy! (yes, I'm that old...)

I think it’s difficult to be a fan of someone and be objective at the same time

So it is bordering on a bit insulting then!
I can be objective about them. When necessary. This thread is batshit though. Something good they have done that even the DM & Express (who hate them) have shown lukewarm approval for (unheard of)... yet on here, the initiative is rubbished. Just because H&M did a very nice video congratulating winners. AND not using their royal titles. Just Harry & Meghan.
That observation is not being 'a fan'. It is being fair to H&M.

(p.s. me and one of the DDs are massive RF fans, we already miss him!)

Iwantcakeeveryday · 04/08/2023 16:08

*His mum did it.

His dad did it.*

His Aunt too. There are lots of books written about them, some with their involvement and some not. I do not see what Harry did as any more of a betrayal than leaking stories to the press. Which definitely happened otherwise we wouldn't know half the shit we do- much of it distorted of course.

Its not bordering on insulting, it is and it is intended to be. We can't just be people with opinions that differ, we can only be fans who peddle fiction.

Yep. Both his Mum and Dad did it. And interviews. And Sarah Ferguson did an OW interview and slated 'the Institution' in her book. She called them cold, callous and calculating.
Funny how she's happy to live on a 98 acre Royal Estate for decades now though....

On a scale of 1 to 10 how condesending do you think that paragraph was?

😂

she is now in 911 lone star. I don't think any of them went on to big things. did see harvey in some action film once.

I do sometimes feel I am back at school and Miss Bates (worst teacher ever) spelling out to me how ridiculous and stupid I am (which she did frequently) Shock

I don't think they made a career out of it did they?

An interview or book fine, Harold however has done little else except constantly blab to the media since his flounce.

The phone call thing seemed very nice, they do need to tone down the rictus grins though my cheeks were aching on their behalf. Just be natural guys stop trying so hard to be cool!

Anything staged like this is a bit cringey whether it's W or H.

The thing that feels off to me is that this type of stuff is the job of the RF (PR for charities), whereas how is this H&M's job? It's like they've recreated a royal type role but without anyone paying them for this to be a job?
How does this make them money? isn't this them giving money away? Whose money are they giving?

I guess I just don't get how this is a job outside the RF?

I was thinking the same, I don't understand how this is a job. They don't have the clout of the Obamas or the money of the Gates, so is their foundation really sustainable for the long term? I guess I just don't understand how these things work.

I would have thought they would have been better off getting proper jobs of some kind 🤷‍♀️

Gina Torres (who plays Jessica, the boss) has been quite a successful actress for many years. Nerds know and love her from Firefly, for example, but she has been in a LOT of things.

Gabriel Macht, who plays Harvey (the reason I started watching the show when it first came out, because he is beautiful) had a relatively decent career before Suits, as did Abigail Spencer (Scottie).

onlylarkin · 04/08/2023 16:27

@BethDuttonsTwin because Harry doesn't want to come back.

It surprises me that so many people think that being in the BRF is the end game, but Harry was not happy there and he made the choice to leave. Harry is not going back.

I do hope that the family can mend fences for the future, but lots of families have conflict and estrangement is higher now than ever.

IamSTARVING · 04/08/2023 16:28

@Roussette I had a Miss Bates type too!

What a gimlet eye she had!

Yes I’m pretty sure Harvey’s looks was the draw here too. They were a bit mean to Louis though
