I came across some old threads in other forums and also articles where Catherine was being criticized for being lazy, dumb, overrated, a gold digger and called all sorts of names. There were even threads that questioned why people disliked her so much, and multiple pages of replies stating why she was so disliked. I am wondering why this seems to have now been forgotten, even if Meghan became the new media target, why is it hardly mentioned the amount of hate and vitriol that Catherine went through?

How many posts have you made where you have not referenced “the media” in any way?

Although people on Mumsnet are many things, they are not mindreaders.

This is pretty stark but I wonder how easy it would be to do it the other way round? There are endless articles about the royals, some positive, most negative. These are not the same people writing the same articles at the same time. Kate has had horrendous press over the years. Has either of them had anything has bad as the poll on whether people would rather have sex with the Duchess of York or a pig? Meghan’s popularity rating was massively high in the early days - way higher than Kate’s, who was compared to her unfavourably until after the move away from the royal family.

Too true. Anne hasn't always had glorious coverage, neither did Margaret, nor Sophie. The York girls have been treated poorly & Camilla was vilified too. It's definitely a woman thing.

Yes Kate had horrendous media for a very long time. I think around ten years. She also had her privacy broken with those pictures in France. They went around the world. She had her phone hacked 155 times. She was stalked by grown men with a camera 24/7 for a very long time without protection. And you could go on and on. People have just a very short attention spam.

But Meghan was never more popular then Kate in those polls. Every poll Kate was more popular then her. Only thing is that she was indeed unfavorably compared to Meghan in tabloids. But that's just tabloids for you. Meghan was the new shiny thing in town. But that didn't last very long.

Sorry, you’re right. I was thinking of Harry becoming the most popular royal after their engagement.

It’s ALL bad. Comparing who got treated worse at what time is not the point.

The point is it’s all bad all the time, from the time journalists trashed Margaret until people continually trashing Meghan today. Social media has made it 5000% worse and somehow more acceptable.

And I’ll never understand why people are so hateful towards women they don’t know, will never meet and who have no effect on their lives whatsoever.
It’s absurd.

I think people are determined to blame Meghan for the rift between Harry and his family and especially between the brothers but in Harry's own words, he and William were not as close as people believed. Diana's death probably brought them together for a little bit and while they loved each other, they then they naturally drifted apart. Then, William got married and obviously his wife and children became his priority while Harry was still single without children.

I even remember when he was asked about Charlotte's birth, he said that he hadn't seen (talked to?) W&K in a while. And also, when the Waleses got engaged in 2010, Harry said that he was looking forward to get to know Kate. If you are close to your brother, why would you just be getting to know the woman he's been dating for 7-8 years?
He and William had already been drifting apart years before Meghan was in the picture.

Meghan got blamed for so much, I feel really sorry for her. Harry is toxic. She has said some critical things about the Markles, deservedly tbh, however nothing even comes close to how nasty Harry has been about his own family. It’s all him.

The Markles have been a mess, especially Samantha. I don't even understand how some people defend them.

Well, hard to disagree with the fact that Diana, in the most charitable interpretation, was not academically able, surely? A wildly expensive education, resulting in an O-level and award for hamster care or something.

But surely you don't have to have intimate knowledge of RF to have a form an opinion of Harry from his documentary and his book and his interviews and his statements. It's him that is putting himself and all his private business into the public sphere.
People are obviously going to form an opinion of him and his activities and just like he's happy to express what he thinks about everything, he will obviously have been expecting others will express what they think about him.

Diana did publicly once describe herself as thick as two short planks( or maybe it was one plank, I can't remember) which of course was gleefully picked up by the press and never forgotten, so that wasn't something made up by the media. I believe she later regretted making such a comment.

Sophie was a commoner i.e. she was untitled and not born into aristocracy. Newsworthy at the time because she married one of the monarch's children.

Apparently you haven’t heard, don’t worry I can fill you in: he wrote a 400 page book (and narrated it himself), made a 6 hour documentary/reality show, was interviewed by Oprah Winfrey no less, appeared on a number of podcasts, and gave several speeches including at the UN. So he’s not as shy and retiring as you think.
