The royal family

Grifters indeed! Can we have a lift Joe?

H&M asked if they could have a lift home on AF1 after HMQs funeral.
Environmentally friendly sure, but makes them look grabby and entitled again. Makes for a good story though.

I don’t think H has anywhere near the same work ethic, or any work ethic at all really.

He was in the army.

and?

Did you have similar sweepstakes for all royal couples?

Or just the for one where the white prince married the mixed race woman?

This is such an unpleasant thing to do.

Are you really saying that there are people at your workplace rooting for the divorce of a couple with two young children? And that you personally hope that the parents of these two young children will divorce a year from now. so that you win 400 pounds??

This is such a revealing post because it proves that the whole thing about Meghan being disliked because she said this or she said that on Oprah or Netflix is a lie.

You wanted them to spilt up before they even got married.

And you still want them to spilt up now, even with their two young children.

I wonder why that is!

This is the same style of talk that was used on Oprah - insinuation.

BoohooWoohoo · 20/07/2023 10:19

The timing is very interesting. This sort of story seems to emerge when there's a new book coming out.

When she met H, M was a self-made woman who'd made her way up from being a regular girl to, with a little help from Thomas Markel, breaking into showbiz and making a living from it.

What do you mean "with a little help from Thomas Markle*?

He paid for her education, as many fathers pay for their children's education?

Are you saying that her success as an adult is owed entirely to that childhood support from her father, and nothing to do with her own work?

If so, why were Samantha and Thomas Junior not as successful, given they have the same father? Samantha especially took on minor acting roles in her 20s.

Why didn't Thomas Markle's magic extent to her?

I don't think the college stuff is true, M said in a speech that she paid her own way thru college.

Howsimplywonderful · 20/07/2023 10:20

I think the timing is more down to the fact that the American president was in town. Perhaps his staff shared that Harry wanted to cadge a lift but the US said no.

BeginningToLookALotLike · 20/07/2023 10:22

I thought the lottery win also paid for Meghan to go to private school where she would have learned the importance of making connections.

Whatever people say about her, she does have a strong work ethic.

Howsimplywonderful · 20/07/2023 10:23

@potniatheron

Her dad took out a loan to pay her college fees as they were expensive. She got some work in college to reduce the bill but he paid it.
she didn’t get a loan which meant she could follow her acting dream rather than having to get a job to start paying the loan back

She said before on The Tig that her father had paid, and there were fulsome tributes to him every fathers day until about 2016/17

I've sometimes wondered what happened between what proved to be the final fulsome message and her decision not to introduce her serious boyfriend in person at all.

MrsMaxDeWinter · 20/07/2023 10:29

headstone · 20/07/2023 10:11

I think Thomas lottery win paid the college fees but I’m not sure on timelines. It does seem like Meghan got more from her dad growing yup then the elder two got and maybe this is part of the resentment towards her.

Yes. There is clear resentment.

Meghan grew up with a loving father and mother, even though they were separate and not together. She grew up knowing she was loved by both her parents.

The other two are estranged from their mother, from their own children, and until 2018, were estranged from their father and from each other.

potniatheron · 20/07/2023 10:29

Lucky Megan! I wroked for years before I could pay back mine, I'm sure that's the case for the vast majority of us.

Thank you for clarifying tho as I was sure that she said she worked to pay her way thru college. I presume she meant the job that helped her dad with the loan he took out.

So the US taxpayers would have paid for their return flight ?
Apart from the kudos of being on AF1 what was the point ? Presumably AF1 was going to Washington so H and M would then have had to catch a flight to California? Unless they expected the President to do a detour ?

No. The Bidens would have picked up the bill just the same way they even pay for their children and grandchildren to travel on board.

Wheresthebeach · 20/07/2023 10:38

I said she has political ambitions so a link with the Biden's would be useful.

Why the pile on? Frankly if she wants to progress in US politics she can - she needs to renounce her title if so and give it a go.

MM called Senators to discuss a bill - how can't that be political?

But say anything other than - she's amazing - and its a massive pile on.

pilates · 20/07/2023 10:41

Another embarrassment for M & H. H must be struggling- he can’t be used to the word no.

It's pretty clear what happened isn't it?

Meghan did not want, and does not want her batshit sister in her life. They have not seen each since 2008.

She was probably worried that if Thomas met Harry, he could not be trusted not to blab to Samantha who by then was in the press every other day talking about her.

I think she believed that she could contain the interaction between Thomas and Harry to just the wedding, but even that, Samantha managed to fuck up for her with that asinine pap photo stunt. Then when the rift grew between Meghan and her father, Samantha encouraged him to make it all public, which obviously made mending things difficult. He then started to blackmail her through the press, and was used by people like Dan Wootton and Piers Morgan who have an axe to grind with Meghan.

Add to that, Thomas then began to appear on conspiracy blogs that speculate on Meghan's children, and on which Samantha is a regular guest, and you can understand why Meghan can't trust her father.

He has chosen his two other children over her.

And that's his right.

She has chosen to walk away.

Which is her right.

Sugarplumfury · 20/07/2023 10:43

The Royals along with senior government ministers seem to holiday in other important/prominent people's homes when they go abroad for holidays or work. I could imagine Harry thinking it was perfectly normal to ask the Biden's to share their plane.

Serenster · 20/07/2023 10:43

wow just wow. how low can people go.

Samcro has obviously never heard if the Darwin Awards or “Death Sweepstakes” where you pick various celebrities and get points if they die in that year. The Duke of Edinburgh was a popular choice for years in the team that ran the sweepstajke in one of my former workplaces. 🤣

Most humour is based on an element of bad taste, I think.

cheezncrackers · 20/07/2023 10:46

Maybe Biden was happy to have them

Oh come on, surely no one is this naive? Biden may be old and doddery, but he isn't going to risk his good relationship with King Charles in order to give H&M a lift and a tacit endorsement! H&M are a pair of former members of the RF who now make a living flogging their family secrets to the highest bidder. No powerful person in their right mind is going to choose to endorse them over having a good relationship with a king.

You had two posters respond to you with 3 comments. That is not a 'pile on'. Do you expect to post with no one disagreeing with you?

Wheresthebeach · 20/07/2023 10:49

@Iwantcakeeveryday I can imagine no examples of where you would agree with me! But the comment about MM being political wasn't critical. It's an observation yet it was treated as critical.

All the causes that Meghan has been active on are things that rational people on Mumsnet would agree with are good things to raise.

So she called Senators to talk about something she cares about. Thousands of people raise matters with their MPs. Some in person in constituency clinics, others in writing, many more on social media,

Do all these people have political ambitions? Do you genuinely not see that you are confusing civic engagement with having political ambition?

You will know if Meghan has political ambitions because in the US, races for Governor, Congress, President etc are announced in the real world. They are not figments of the lurid imagination of posters on Mumsnet,

I actually think it would've been more of a security issue, you need the highest level of security clearance for AF1. If it was Charlkes who wanted a lift then it might happen. I don't think he'd ask though.

@Serenster I definitely think the best humour is based on an element of bad taste or iconoclasm! Freud thought that laughter is partly an action of slight disgust or shock which is why that works so well in humour. Later anthropologists have argued that it's a release of tension.

There's a lot of really interesting anthropological work on why humans laugh and what role it may play in reeasing disgust, tension, and making social bonds more cohesive. I think that's why good humour always needs to be a bit mischeivous or a bit bad taste.

MamoruHisaishi · 20/07/2023 10:57

Iwantcakeeveryday · 20/07/2023 09:43

Yes it is. Don;t tell poc when our race is or isn't relevant. Meghan was subject to racism. Its not a leap to suggest people disliking her at first sight did so because of her race, plenty of people did and to pretend they didn't is enabling their racism.

As a POC myself, you should learn to speak for yourself only. Not all POC believe that the only reason Meghan is so disliked is due to racism. Don't presume that the person was being racist as well just because they didn't think that the marriage would last between Harry and Meghan based on their body language in their engagement interview. We apparently can't seem to form our own opinions of Meghan because her fans quickly jump to accusations of racism as a defence mechanism.

MamoruHisaishi · 20/07/2023 10:58

Not allowed to form our own opinions I meant

Serenster · 20/07/2023 10:58

And Thomas Jr. who was given money to buy a business but lost that. All he seems to do is go on reality shows to slag Meghan off, like Big Brother in Oz, and do blackface on youtube. Shocking.

And we’re back to the always amusing double standards so prevalent on these threads.

“It’s completely unacceptable to say you have a negative opinion on Meghan Markle! You don’t know her personally, you have just seen coverage of her actions and that’s not something you can justifiably form a negative option on - and if you do, there’s something else going on…”

versus

Here’s my negative opinion about somebody else who has been Meghan Markle-adjacent. I don’t know them personally, I’ve only seen coverage of their actions, but that’s something on which I can justifiably form a negative opinion. And there’s absolutely nothing else going on with that

Why you can’t just accept that other people are perfectly allowed to form negative opinions about someone from seeing how they talk, act and behave on camera and in their interactions? It’s perfectly normal to do so. Most people have formed negative opinions about all sorts of people in the public eye on this basis.
