H&M asked if they could have a lift home on AF1 after HMQs funeral.
Environmentally friendly sure, but makes them look grabby and entitled again. Makes for a good story though.

@Ridemeginger The Issa designer Helayel named Wallis as her inspiration when previewing her Fall/Winter (2011/2012) collection at London Fashion Week in Feb 2011 - so not specifically related to the engagement dress

Yes - just clarifying the timeline - the collection the designer said was inspired by Wallis Simpson was presented at London Fashion week in February 2011. Kate had appeared in an Issa dress (as other posters have said, a staple design of the brand) at the announcement of her engagement in November 2010. So there was no connection between Kate’s dress and Wallis Simpson.

Well I guess we will have to take your word for it if you haven't got time to do it.

I did wonder the same; would the queen even notice one particular outfit and connect it with her Uncle’s companion? If she did, would she think anything of it?

Especially whomever said Kate said “wow” and believed that meant something more than “What a great design!”

Would Meghan have really been studying their clothing and thinking it would be a message if she wore the same? I can imagine looking for inspiration high and low, but cannot imagine trying to send messages.

I suspect the story about Meghan sending Jill Biden lemons was just made up. I really hope so. Because thinking that a sitting President’s wife and her staff are choosing clothing from a major design house and wearing it publicly to support you because you married the Queen’s grandson and decided to decamp to your own country is next level narcissism

Yes and thank you

LadyMuckingabout · 24/07/2023 13:03

i think, unlike quite a few posters, that Meghan looks great in her outfits. However, the Oprah look was not a good idea. Whether it was a Wallis or a Lady Macbeth or just a summer dress, it made her look - together with the heavy eyeliner - mean and that vision sort of stayed with people, the people who are not interested on a daily basis like on MN!

longwayoff · 24/07/2023 13:04

Wallis had a job in a clinic? Didn't think she'd been that hard up.

I couldn't begin to say if it's made up or not, but wonder if the claim would be any more narcissistic than those about South Africans dancing in the streets a la Mandela?

Just catching up with the thread, some very interesting observations. Before @Serenster clarified the timeline and ruled out Kate’s WS inspired engagement dress I would have said that in any event Kate would be very, very unlikely to wear a dress that in any way referenced WS, for obvious reasons.

Meghan’s approach is generally very derivative so it wouldn’t surprise me if she didn’t trawl vintage royal images for inspiration, without considering what WS represents constitutionally. So, not trying to send a message but absolutely copying the style.

On the subject of brooches, I have a feeling that the language of the Queen’s brooches actually started on the S&B boards, I’m not sure it’s actually a thing.

Wallis had a job in a clinic? Didn't think she'd been that hard up.

She ran two hospitals in the Bahamas when Edward was governor there. Is that maybe what they were referring to.
She was actually an extremely intelligent, well-educated woman.

Serenster · 24/07/2023 13:38

There were definitely some messages in the Queen’s deployment of her brooch collection (and her jewellery generally) over the years - she’d wear a brooch gifted to her by a country/organisation to later engagements with the same country/organisation for example. Or she’d wear a brooch titled “The Lovers’ knot “ brooch to weddings. But I think people took that idea and ran with it, sometimes to fanciful conclusions…

longwayoff · 24/07/2023 13:39

I was referring to her clothing. She looks like a 1950s ward nurse on a tea break.

This seems more likely to me.

Of course anyone in the public eye is trying to project an image. It doesn’t mean they are trying to send a message beyond one themselves.

Millicentsparty · 24/07/2023 13:45

I think Meghans white coat dress was too similar to Wallis's for it to be a coincidence. But their different physiques made them look a bit different.
However, I'm absolutely sure the Queen couldn't have cared less. As long as people looked appropriate and decent, I'm sure she didn't spend any time thinking about it. She seemed far too sensible a woman for that.
If no one had pointed out the similarity, we'd never have known anyway, so really, does it matter? She looked good in it. Which is more than could be said for her Oprah interview. That eyeliner! Why didn't someone say something to her?

Oh! Sorry, I didn't get the joke. 😄

But, anyway, she did run those hospitals so maybe she did actually get her inspiration from there. 😉

longwayoff · 24/07/2023 13:49

😀no matter, Millicent, I doubt she'd appreciate the comparison herself.

AutumnCrow · 24/07/2023 14:10

The Kate saying 'wow' at the Queen's Platinum Jubilee Church Service of Thanksgiving definitely happened, but I guess only she knows why she said it.

One thing that also occurred to me was regarding the gloves. Was there a royal code that day? The only royal female there wearing gloves was, I think, the very senior The Princess Royal, who arrived and stepped out of her car wearing them. (HMQ was absent, I recall?)

Meghan arrived at the church not wearing gloves, and shook hands with the receiving clergymen not wearing gloves. She was carrying them though. So she must have put them on once she got inside the church, and before she walked to her seat, because she had them on inside. So maybe it was some monarchical glove code thing.

I really want it to be a glove thing now.

(I'm sorry, this is far more interesting than doing my accounts and wrangling with a HP printer.)

Didn't consider the diplomatic wears but of course the Queen was very good at that! I’d love to think that brooches were the bearers of a secret code but sadly I think we may have made that up.

If true, it’ll have been about PR rather than money won’t it- the inherent kudos of travelling on AF1… it’d look like the presidency endorsed them.

This. They do anything for publicity. I haven't forgotten their photo shoot in a graveyard for Rememberance Day.

Sugarfree23 · 24/07/2023 14:28

Seriously photoshoot in a cemetery?
Surely Harry has more respect than that,?

Not in the case of the ghastly Princess Michael of Kent we didn't ...

I don't know. She was actually very proud of what she did and of the gift they gave her when she left.
Honestly, I don't know whether she had a good sense of humour or not. She certainly captivated a lot of men and she wasn't that good-looking, so she must have had something about her in person.
