Possibly, @KillerSandy, if she knew she was ill and how long she had left. But at the age of 96, that was probably on her mind anyway.

The queen looks a bit bemused/confused by it all. Not the best shot of her, I'm afraid.

I think she just looks suddenly old. Which obviously she was! She’d lost weight and was looking frail. But it’s an honest photo and shows her as she was towards the end of her life. I think that is part of its charm. It’s not posed or retouched within an inch of its life and it captures a moment in time as pp have said. I don’t think it’s intended to win awards for lighting and composition.

I agree.

She must have been off her tits of morphine to get through that meeting with Truss so close to the end.

Horrible comment from a nasty person.

Cam22 · 22/04/2023 19:10

The photograph is charming - as all Kate’s photos are.

You are, presumably, not an actual Queen?

Haha

nildesparandum · 22/04/2023 19:59

I have just noticed how much the Queen resembles her ancestor George III on this photo.

A lovely photo of a beloved granny and her grandchildren....people actually judging it and commenting ridiculous and unkind things is just baffling, it's a photo full of innocent children.

If you don't like the RF just hide the thread or scroll on....there's a certain kind of poster on the royal threads who are just filled with such vitriol their level of commitment to derailing threads and bickering with each other is unhinged.

I agree. I have to say I do feel slightly (very slightly) sorry for that type of poster, as they obviously have so little of interest in their own lives that they have to broadcast their envy and vitriol to all and sundry to make themselves look important. The same with those who feel the need to criticise the photo because of its compostion, one can only feel that no-one takes them seriously in real life so they have to come on MN to show their superiority.

HM did die with bone cancer. However, it would be hard to say that she died 'of' it, given that people of such an advanced age rarely die of one specific condition.

How do you know?

How do you know?

They don’t, they’re listening to a deluded old man who has money to make off the RF.

It’s weird how posters are desperate for the Queen to have and cancer. What is wrong with them?

You don't seem to understand that people are allowed to have a different opinion from you. In fact, it wouldn't matter if this picture were to be voted the all-time greatest photograph since the invention of the camera - people are still allowed not to like it.

If by that you mean Gyles Brandreth, then that can't be the case.

As he did not say she had bone cancer. He said she had bone marrow cancer. And they are not the same thing at all.

Bone marrow cancer is a form of blood cancer (not a form of bone cancer)

pilates · 23/04/2023 08:06

Of course people are allowed to have a different opinion but some anti-royalists just like to pick holes and make spiteful remarks just for the sake of it. You can always scroll on if you hate the RF.

mixedrecycling · 23/04/2023 08:31

Yes, the comment was 'doesn't deserve to be in the national press'.

The national press isn't a photo portrait competition to find the 'best' photo. The quality of the photo is neither here nor there.

I understand why people are republican for rational reasons - I am in theory, and in practice don't think the issue is important enough to go through all the destruction and division that would ensue, for minimal benefit.

But some people do seem to be republican because of some weird emotional reaction to people they've never met.

It's not very well composed.

It's actually really well composed, even the children's height. Great picture and looks genuine, not forced. Just lovely

Soontobe60 · 21/04/2023 15:46

Have you never taken a family photo? I have one almost identical to this with my grandma sitting down surrounded by myself, siblings and cousins. It’s my favourite photo of us. I think it was taken by my grandpa.

This. Such weird, cynical comments by some! Surely most people take family photos!

Roussette · 23/04/2023 09:21

I prefer a wonky pic, it shows they're human!

He said “he’d heard” she’d had bone marrow cancer. A source about reliable as a thick teenager editing Wikipedia

LBFseBrom · 23/04/2023 12:09

Thank you. Yes Gyles Brandreth did say 'he had heard' the late Queen had bone marrow cancer. I have not read his book yet and, as we know, such books are often mis-quoted.

Prince Edward's son is not the Earl of Wessex, just because his father has a new title. He will inherit that title when Edward dies. He won't inherit the Duke of Edinburgh title because the King gave it to Edward for his own lifetime only.

If titles worked like that, then Prince George would be Duke of Cambridge now.

He is. The RF website has been updated as such. As a courtesy he uses the most senior of his father’s titles that Edward is not using himself. That’s now EoW whereas previously is was Viscount Severn.
Actually makes sense for him to use it given that’s what he’s going to be after Edward dies until he himself dies.

George could use Earl of Strathearn, but just as they didn’t with William they haven’t used any subsidiary titles for George. He couldn’t be Duke of Cornwall as it’s a title specific for the heir to the throne, as several of Williams current titles are.

We’ve had two very happy days of Eid celebrations where I live and many a picture has been taken. None of them are of any technical merit but they all show a huge family in various homes for various parts of the day. We had a great time and we’re all reminded of how much we love each other. I expect it was the same for the late Queen. Who cares if the picture was wonky. The kids were with their granny and were happy.

Sudeko · 23/04/2023 13:23

I think she is a great photographer because she manages to capture emotions in a way that many other amateurs do not manage. I'm sure that she could have easily corrected the angle but she chose not to do it which is really brave knowing how her efforts are always scrutinzed. She kept it in to give it a homely quality because it was probably a scene of merry chaos.

mixedrecycling · 23/04/2023 13:25

Getting that many children, several quite young, looking in the same direction - let alone not blinking, yawning or picking their nose - would have been quite enough of a challenge 😂
