What's the big deal about Fogmore Cottage?

They are rarely in the UK. It would just sitting there empty. It makes no sense. Also, if Harry and Meghan need a home in Britain, why not buy a home?

Not sure about that.

KP is their London residence, then there is Anmer Hall in Norfolk.

Not sure how much they use that now so I can imagine if they settle in Windsor that will go back to Crown estates to be privately rented (as it was before they moved in) and their main residence would be the Castle or RL in Windsor.

Adelaide Cott is pretty obviously a temporary set up and again will go back to Crown Estates.

W&C are in a very different position to C re: property.

Helpful I think to look back at what Meghan and Harry themselves said about their Frogmore Cottage home when they released their statements on the Sussex Royal website back in January 2020:

The refurbishment of Frogmore Cottage was funded by the Queen through the Sovereign Grant, reflecting the Monarchy’s responsibility to maintain the upkeep of buildings with historical significance. Expenses related to fixtures, furnishings, and fittings at the official residence – which is owned by the Queen – were funded privately by The Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Frogmore Cottage will continue to be the property of the Queen. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will continue to use Frogmore Cottage – with the permission of the Queen – as their official residence as they continue to support the Monarchy, and so that their family will always have a place to call home in the United Kingdom.

So - they acknowledge they never owned it, recognised they only retained a right to use it while they supported the monarchy, and clarified that they only paid for the decoration of it to their tastes, with the Queen paying for all the other renovations and updating.

Given this, it’s hard to see why they or their supporters could feel they are now hard done by.

Harry has just found out that there are consequences to dishing the dirt on the family, true or not. What is wrong with living in Balmoral? They want to be on their own?

I think it's a good idea for Andrew to go into it. Why he needs a great big mansion with 30 bedrooms is anyone's guess. Also cheaper as his current home needs added security which is expensive.

Is that not Frogmore House?

I thought this was about Frogmore Cottage?

Spectre8 · 07/03/2023 22:07

There is no big deal about it, the conversations have been happening for a while. Then there was unfavourable media coverage about the King and the eu stuff and bang suddenly the media are making it headline news and using emotive wording like eviction.

Its pathetic. utterly pathetic and people still fall for it 🙄

So he has to ask for somewhere to stay and Charles might or might not grant it. Rather than using the house he was paying a market rent for.
Charles just wants to control them. Harry is not stupid he will know that.
If I was him I would not bring my family into that toxic set up.

Frogmore is Charles' property and the lease was only on an annual basis, so their continued ability to 'live' there was always going to be dependent on his good will.

If they don't want to be 'controlled' by Charles, then maybe best they don't stay in any of his properties? Can't they buy their own place with the money they've made telling the world what a rotter he is?

Yeah but it's andrew's old one. Ewww...! I wouldn't want that one, it'd have to be thoroughly, thoroughly decontaminated first. Wouldn't blame H&M for not wanting their kids to stay there, yuk!

Have H&M made any mention of uncle Andrew? I haven’t read the book or watched the interviews but I also haven’t noticed anything in the press and assume it would be widely reported if they mentioned him at all. It’s a hot topic right?

And yet no mention of the royals using H&M to shield Andrew from the press, or not wanting Andrew near the children, or M having a bad vibe from him or childhood stories. So I assume Andrew and the recent media anround him isn’t as important as bridesmaids dresses or dog bowls.

It makes a lot of sense. He doesn't need the house he has so he's being moved to Frogmore. H&M don't need Frogmore because they're never here so they've been offered apartments at Buckingham Palace. Seems like 2 sensible moves on Charles' part

Both moves are still just rumour however.

Personally, I believe the one about Andrew moving to FC, but I don't see the Harkles being given apartments at BP, certainly not on a permanent basis. I thought there were extensive renovation works going on there now in any case?

Most royal residences are just sitting around empty most of the time too. You could complain about that..

True, they could buy a home but it's pretty mean of Charles to take away the one safe and secure property his son had in this country, to do that to his own flesh and blood, including grandchildren, that he'd paid up for. Extremely mean, actually. They deserve to be reimbursed for the work they put into it at least.

Mean? Poor thing he got cut off from Daddy, but only after a year or being maintained away from home. What did he exactly do to deserve it I would like to know, maybe we try and get lucky too.

I can’t think of anything I care about less than which millionaire gets a freebie house

I would rather it wasn’t a sex offender though

I agree. Not sure why he needs such a big house even

soundsofthesixties · 07/03/2023 22:36

Andrews house has 30 rooms, not 30 bedrooms. It has 7 bedrooms, still plenty enough for him and Fergie though.

PosieLuton · 07/03/2023 22:36

Harry was paying a market rent.

Harry was paying a market rent.

I know there's not much point in asking given your failure to do so on the other thread, but do you have a link to back up that claim?

PosieLuton · 07/03/2023 22:45

Just google there are lots of articles saying this.

Roussette · 07/03/2023 22:46

And it is reported so in the yearly SG report

There aren't. All the articles talk about the renovations and rent. None of the articles say how much rent, if any, was paid.

"Lots of articles"?

Do you have a reliable source, based on access to the accounts or other evidence?

So you want to know exactly how much? I don't think that's been reported anywhere. Why do you say 'if any'

It's everywhere that is the case

It says everywhere what is the case? The sovereign grant report doesn't mention an amount of rent. A previous poster claims they were paying over £300k per year in rent but doesn't appear to know where that figure comes from. I say 'if any', because, as has been shown, no-one knows. They could have been paying £3.50 per year.

I'm not bothered how much rent they paid, but am interested to see that previous posters are using the supposed rental payment as another stick to beat Charles with.

MysteryBelle · 07/03/2023 23:10

Is it a typo or is it called Fogmore Cottage because of all the smoke from Harry’s pot and hallucinogens he says is a fundamental part of his life now? 😂

He’s not the brightest, is he. He was an easy target.

tara66 · 07/03/2023 23:27

Aren't they going to be booed all the way to St Paul's if they come in May? Won't they then be the main story?

oakleaffy · 07/03/2023 23:38

Harry and Meghan Markle are professional victims- Selling stories on the RF are how they make their money.

They won’t be returning, so won’t need a house of their own in UK.

A broom cupboard at Windsor will suffice , and fit in with the “ Woe are us” narrative should they pop over.

PosieLuton · 07/03/2023 23:44

@tara66 It is Charles and Camilla who keep getting booed.

Houseplantjungle · 08/03/2023 00:50

I liked Ann McElvoy’s opinion article in Evening Standard yesterday. ‘Grace and favour residence means just that. Out of Grace equals out of favour. And that means out’.
