Definitely too posh for an apostrophe. I’m sure they leave them to the greengrocer 😏 😂

😂

British Class is very strange. The further we go the further away from wealth a lot of the aristocracy are. And more and more truly wealthy people are self made. 'New money' is a weird way of saying 'self made'. Only in the UK is there any sort of negative connotation. Everywhere else, being self made is a massive credit to the person.

In France bring self-made isn't a massive credit to the person. "Nouveau riche" is definitely not used positively! What's strange there - and in some other European countries without a royal family - is that the aristocracy still exists and the families are known. You can kill off a royal family, but you can't seem to eradicate an aristocracy..or the fascination in them that a section of "commoners" have in them. And there seems to be an unspoken code of recognition between the families, meaning the "nouveau riche" are known and not welcomed, unless they have a (financial) use.

Am generalising of course, I'm sure there are some people with silent titles who aren't like that. I've just not met them. 😉

I think the key to the Middletons social status is simple tactical ambition. Carole Middleton has pulled off a Thomas Cromwell style ascent up the class system. To be from her background and now the mother in law of the heir to the throne is an impressive climb. That doesn't happen by accident. The most important decision is the school the daughters went to. Maybe the son as well. Which means they were spending around 100k a year on secondary school for the three kids for a long time. And the keeping up with house, cars, holidays, clothes, hobbies, sport, music lessons. Then KM goes to St Andrew's to study History of Art. A very posh uni I think and a degree that seems to be full of the children of the wealthy and the establishment. It's a very acceptable degree in such circles. Then William chooses that uni - maybe a coincidence? But nevertheless the Middletons are class ninjas. I have to respect their focus. I think Carole Middleton is an ass kicker. I would love to listen to her private thoughts on The Duchess of Sussex.

I agree it honestly jntrigues me how Kate slotted in so well with the rf not being aristo herself.. She was obviously raised to believe she was just as good (if not better than them!) so fair dues to her parents for instilling that in her.

One word is missing. I assume you mean - How posh are the Middleton's dogs? I don't think dogs have classes. They have puppy schools though and most of the dogs owned by the Middletons, that I have seen, look extremely well trained.

What dogs do the Middletons own? Only seen James cocker spaniels.

It wasn't long ago Britain was made up of a few wealthy families. All the politicians stem from wealth somehow

Rishi SSuna's parents were first generation immigrants.

Explodingatomickittens · 14/02/2023 07:24

The Rishi family like the Middletons both understood education (private) was the key to higher society for their dc's.

The family is upper-middle-class and Catherine has married into Royalty. On an imaginary poshness scale therefore Catherine is 9/10 (Royal, but not by birth) and the rest of her family would be more of a 6/10 (well off but not royalty or aristocracy by birth or marriage).

There are many politicians who aren't wealthy, Angela Rayner who left school with no qualifications to have a baby. Just goes to show you don't have to go to Eton to become a politician

I'd love to know how they did it the aristo circle is notoriously difficult to break into.. The Middleton kids must have been raised to have great confidence & social skills

I think the ability to pay for private elitist boarding schools and universities definitely gave them access to the upper crust and possibly the area they could afford to live in.

Also note that being an aristocratic doesn't always mean they are wealthy;they might of the titles and the family mansions of their ancestors but not their wealth which usually was earnt from their land and the family mansions are now burdensome money pits.

cosmiccosmos · 14/02/2023 07:44

Honestly of course Pippa has married 'well', her sister is married to the next king! They would have all been coming out of the woodwork, pushed by Mummy. After all the children will be related to and playing with the next king! Good lord everyone do keep up!

As for the Middletons being 'posh', you can't know. They are self made, can't fault the obvious hard work but clearly they wanted their children to mix with a certain sort (notice not 'right' sort). I wouldn't send my children to Marlborough if you paid me.

Explodingatomickittens · 14/02/2023 07:46

I'm not sure about the Sunak's but the Middletons also made sure the kids were very competent at middle/upper class activities... They are very sporty obviously a lot of that was nurtured at school e.g hockey, lacrosse, athletics. But the Middletons also made sure they could play tennis, row (Kate was part of a sailing team), all are excellent skiers (Kate's first time being photographed in the press was on a skiing holiday with Wills in Klosters, a complete baptism of fire if one was a novice skiier but Kate was well prepared & glided down the slopes!) all three excellent swimmers.

Basically what I'm saying is between their education, hobbyies & sports they were raised to be able to fit in with the higher echelons of society. And more power to them

Correct....

" chicken or beef "...." chicken or beef "..." tea or coffee " " tea or coffee "........!!!...she must be patient...having said that a million times when on the planes....maybe explains her frosty hard face !!

You've just made a right cunt of yourself there

I know someone in my family like this and to be honest it is a bit pitiful.

We are ordinary, I couldn't say what class, no idea, don't care. It's my niece and she has married someone 'old money' (if we want to use that term) who works for a Duke (won't identify which one!)

OMG She has become the biggest snob imaginable! I don't recognise her speaking voice any more. Two children with ridiculous names (think Persephone and Crispin type names!), they go to a very expensive private school, the little boy seems to live in a suit and tie lol, and she has even called the county she lives in different to what it is, as the adjoining county sounds far more 'posh'.
I honestly think she has earmarked one of K&W's children as possible spouses for the future (right age!)
Me and my DCs are just Shock🤣 with it all because it is soooooo not us!

Maireas · 14/02/2023 08:26

So, @Roussette ? They're different to you. Are they doing any harm?. Let them get on with it.
If you and your children are laughing at them, I hope it's not obvious. There's such a thing as reverse snobbery.

Maireas · 14/02/2023 08:28

Some awful snobbery about Carole Middleton on here. So, she was cabin crew, so what?

Oh give me a break, please. I have more manners, as have my children, than to be ridiculing them to their face. It's the same as ever when we get together, pleasant and friendly, but it's getting more infrequent as I presume we're all possibly not good enough for them now. Thanks for your concern about them though.

Allshallbewell2021 · 14/02/2023 08:31

I am not saying that the Middletons' ambition to rise up the social classes is admirable in itself. That's a different judgment. I'm just saying that you don't have that rise by accident. I think Carole Middleton is a formidable person in as much as she has aimed for something difficult and achieved it in a very snooty/snobby environment.
It's just like I admire any achiever who doggedly pursued an aim. Like Olympic sports people.
The snobbery about her is incredible.
But I am a republican by inclination but you can't knock her. We don't choose what family we are born into, why should we judge her for being a flight attendant.
She also looks fabulous in a coat dress.

I agree it was instrumented very well. Calculated & measured. More power to her. Her children & grandchildren will never want for anything. Carole & Michael are very hands on grandparents too.

Look at her next to Prince Andrew - who deserves more respect? Have you seen his grace and favour house which he has through no effort of his own? It's enormous.

That's ok. I just thought, how awful to have your relatives sneer at you, but of course you're not making it obvious. I'm sure that you're lovely to them in person.

Absolutely. The comparison is stark, isn't it?
All the sneering about her is horrible.

Thank you, course we are, they're our family and the kids are sweet Smile

I'll be back in 20 years time if I am part of the extended family that marries one of W&K's kids!

Maireas · 14/02/2023 08:47

@Roussette - when one of them marries Prince Louis, come back on here with all the gossip 😉
