Just that! The children have married really well!

I admire them. Having two kids with adhd diagnoses myself I’m glad that their son has given some really good open interviews about being diagnosed with adhd and the depression he suffered too before his diagnosis.

Many families in their in their situation would have kept quiet about a diagnosis so I admire their openness.

James is a great advocate. I follow him on insta, love his dogs & his devotion to them.

Jesus .

This sort of thinking ( that the Middletons are to be admired because they succeeded in marrying in ) explains why the UK is failing

It's not just Brexit ( though that is linked to the the ridiculous fallacy that the UK is somehow 'superior') it is the dead hand of a rigid class system

We have a head of state ( 'king') who is showered with money and power ( yes Windsors add loopholes to laws which apply on to Windsors - v political ) and it is all unearned .
Purely a matter of chance .
They do nothing , add nothing to the greater good . Kate is silent - her only value is her ( must be thinnest ever !) appearance . Shallow .

All of this has a deafening effect on growth and ingenuity .
Removing them from head of state will revitalise our society

You can still have your king for those who like the taste of shoe leather . You can fund him .

Agree wholeheartedly. Never understand why people worship a very ordinary family. I like the description of the royal family as state funded Kardashians.

Agree. And even on this thread people are rushing to prove how they are somehow 'in the know' about certain (entirely made up and silly) signifiers that they believe elevate them up the social spectrum

Criticising Kate for roller skating. Or splitting hairs about the words posh/smart. Meanwhile the royal family that is seen as so " aspirational" includes sex offenders and bullies

I believe that a truly upper class person would say "smart" - never "posh".
The Middletons are firmly middle class, and to be admired for having done well as a result of their hard work. But they are not "smart" - not aristocracy/landed/old money.

We wouldn't say either, because we don't really talk about it. "Smart" is American for "clever", so far as I'm aware.

FadoFado · 14/02/2023 20:55

Yes, 'posh' is definitely a commoner's word and 'smart' is the toff's equivalent.

And "idiot" is the word for anyone who thinks you are somehow better or worse depending on which descriptor you use

Spectre8 · 15/02/2023 20:39

I shop at waitress, guess that makes me posh too then

Spectre8 · 15/02/2023 20:40

Oh epic typo fail meant waitrose

Fifi00 · 15/02/2023 20:47

I wonder why some women on MN fawn over them , they haven't achieved much with their lives independently . Just staying thin , marrying rich men getting pregnant it's like something from the Victorian age. I wonder if Carole pushed her girls to do that , I wouldn't want that for my DD. It's pushing women's liberation back..

Fifi00 · 15/02/2023 20:48

I dislike MM but at least she has independent worked and grafted. The Middleton sisters have done nothing , so old fashioned.

For actually posh people I would assume they aren’t posh at all. The other pupils at their school used to make fun of their mother’s job, for example.

Then those people had no class.

Plitvice · 13/02/2023 19:54

Carole is obviously as common as muck but married somebody middle class. I haven't seen enough evidence to believe that Michael was anything above middle-middle class.
Kate then married up as well which dragged everyone else to the next level.
She mixes quite well with the upper classes but she is sort-of undefined now, as is Pippa. Could I suggest lower-upper-class?

I don't know Carole Middleton in case you think I'm defending her. But she behaves respectfully. Calling her as 'common as muck' says far more about you than it does about her.

luckylavender · 16/02/2023 13:53

@AreBearsCatholic - I believe that vulgar phrase came from William's circle.

Carol Middleton certainly didn't come from a posh background in any way- her family were miners, road sweepers and builders. Michael Middleton 's family had wealthy members but he didn't go to university - he was flight attendant and Carole an air hostess when they met.
They were ambitious and seem to have learned how to behave to 'fit in'- might not have been posh to start with but were never 'common'.

He did go to university & he was a flight dispatcher. Basic details.

CatnaryReturns · 16/02/2023 14:23

I was reading recently about how Carole set up Party Pieces after the choice of party plates in Woolworth's for Kate's 5th birthday party was rubbish. I hadn't realised she was still so active in the company, which I think she manages in an admirably low-profile way.

She's the original "Mumtrepreneur" and I really admire her. I'd love to chat about kids' parties and business with her.

Allshallbewell2021 · 18/02/2023 12:00

It's quite possible that Carole, having evolved to where her family now is, may now be a horrendous sneering sooty snob.
That can happen I imagine. Not saying she is but she might be. She may feel she's earned the right to look down on us - the great unwashed.

My grandmother had a very disadvantaged start and married what used to be called "well". She never felt comfortable with her sisters in law who she felt judged her. She was desperate for perfection in everything so no one would judge her. But she managed to work hard at her job and also marry out of poverty and insecurity. This is how it's always been for a majority of young women in most of the world. Female financial independence hasn't been going on for very long in historical terms has it?

Allshallbewell2021 · 18/02/2023 12:01

Snooty not sooty like up a chimney

karamazing · 18/02/2023 12:25

But aren't snobs the ones who haven't quite achieved the wild social climb they dreamed of? She has cemented her position. She is the mum of the future queen.

TwinklyShit · 18/02/2023 12:40

MN likes to make the social distinction between use of “smart” and “posh”, but it doesn’t exist. Some of the poshest people I know use the word “posh”, either to poke fun at themselves and their family, or when gossiping about someone even posher.

The Middletons are first generation upper middle class, and it’s a well-worn ladder. A beautiful, well-educated and charming daughter or two has always been currency for the self-made. The historian Amanda Vickery has even written a book on the subject, called The Gentleman’s Daughter.

Yesthatismychildsigh · 18/02/2023 13:11

I don’t think they’re posh at all. A fundamental of the middle (and increasingly upper nowadays) is working hard to achieve. Not of the offspring have done this. For three of them to not have had careers (or even proper jobs) is baffling.

KM isn't actually the future Queen but Queen Consort there is a big difference between the two. One is a birth right the other is a position that she married into and would be taken away instantly if a divorce was to take place.
