Tiara-gate unveiled (shameless pun)

The fact that meghan said, and Harry believed, she had spent “hours and hours” with dressmakers getting the original scalloped tiara to match the scallop veil edge shows, IMO, one of two things:

  1. meghan is a wild exaggerator and Harry is stupid. I had a high end dress custom made for my wedding. For this type of thing she would just need to hand over to the extremely experienced professionals. Meghan would have no input to this.
  2. meghan is an enormous control freak who stood over them for hours to make sure it was perfect

Harry trying to paint this unbelievably first world issue as arduous is yet another example of how ludicrously out of touch with reality she is. Poor Meghan, she went with another diamond tiara and hours of her time were wasted. I mean she had to take off time from her busy schedule of borrowing lipglosses and battling Willy’s finger to boss dressmakers around.

there is also an amusing quote somewhere about how Harry reassured Charles Meghan would not be a large cost addition for him as she “makes her own clothes”. Did she borrow her entire character from Snow White? Seal singing, dress making?

And yes, Eugenie and Beatrice’s story arc from Fashion Disasters to Fashionistas has been satisfying.

Years ago, I saw a formal portrait of Beatrice in a full length black gown. She looked absolutely stunning. I've always remembered it because, as pp said, at the time they didn't have a reputation for dressing well. It was in a magazine, and I've never been able to find it online.

If I owned the Poltimore tiara, I would totally wear it in the bath!

It's stunning isn't it?

I think she's only worn it once, but I'd love the Delhi Durbar to get some more time out of the vault - it suited Camilla

It does really suit Camilla.

Queen Mary really is some sort of jewel wearing icon, isn't she? There's a picture of her somewhere with the enormous Star of Africa as a brooch, plus various other of the Cullinans similarly set. More was certainly more. I have a theory that is was because she was once a fairly unimportant minor Serene Highness with impoverished and faintly embarrassing parents (although I think her mother sounds quite nice) and the jewels, once she got them, were some kind of armour.

QM in her minimalist phase

Mary was the ultimate magpie, but she also chopped and changed her jewels. She thought nothing of getting them redesigned. I think she also won various sets of stones.

There's thought to be more Mary-era stuff unseen in the vaults. There's another bandeau, similar to Meghans, which hasn't been seen in decades. And there may be more unseen from the Greville bequest - Eugenie's had never been seen before.

Just found an article about the "pre wedding dinner" of W&K.

www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1381772/Princesses-Beatrice-Eugenie-Royal-Wedding-spirit-Queens-gala-dinner.html

B&E look fabulous!

I wonder how Meghan found out about it then?

It was very much the case in 19c royal circles that a Serene Highness was very much a second tier royal to a Royal or Imperial Highness. Mary was generally described as 'poor Mary' by virtue of being not just a Serene Highness but also because her family were both embarrassing and so broke they went abroad to live. Being engaged to not one but two heirs to one of the biggest empires in the world was a fabulous coup for her. She was probably one of the most interesting and cultured members of the RF in the early 20c but she subordinated herself and her interests to being a consort.

I agree @Backstreetsbackalrightdadada

She always looks stunning but the look just wasn’t put together properly. The hair/make up and design choices. It appears everything was rushed. Which makes sense as we have also heard 4 days before the wedding and the flower girl dresses didn’t fit properly. Which was also obvious on the day, poor Charlotte

Mmm I have just looked properly - Charlotte's dress is baaad, baggy at the top and too short.

The others are of varying lengths/fit which looks really really odd.

Orangefir · 08/01/2023 17:16

^ yes, the girls all looked like they were wearing different dresses. Charlotte’s waist band was too low, puff sleeves too big, the hem line didn’t sit correctly, looked unlined.

however, the Canadian bffs daughter dress fitted perfectly

Maybe Eugenie had shown Meghan a photo of the Tiara she was going to wear at her own wedding?

Possibly. That makes asking for it a really dick move though.

diddl · 08/01/2023 18:53

Why do people think that Meghan was offered a tiara & then that offer retracted?

Wouldn't Harry have said so if that was the case?

Maireas · 08/01/2023 18:57

I have no idea, @diddl .
There seems to have been a myriad of problems every step of the way. It must be exhausting.

I agree. All of the bridesmaid’s dresses looked awful, and didn’t fit properly (dresses too wide and too short) apart from the one worn by the daughter of Meghan’s bff, which was longer and fitted properly.

Serenster · 08/01/2023 19:22

Since this thread is kind of about clothes and things, I see Harry has also confirmed Meghan did kept the “gifts” that she was sent by various companies. This is a complete breach not just of Royal but also all public sector guidelines.

Harry’s justification is that she shared them out with her staff. That doesn’t make it better, Harry.

Eugenie is in classic Vivienne Westwood - those dresses are a marvel of engineering, hidden powermesh in the side bodice, like extra strong Spanx for your torso - best to stay standing up all evening!

That would be a very dickish thing to do!

I’d imagine the loanable bits are catalogued - same as paintings in a museum collection?

If so, Meghan would’ve been shown a glossy brochure in the first instance and then a short list would be made and those items brought up from the vault to view in person?

RosesAndHellebores · 08/01/2023 21:30

Meghan can curate whatever she likes but it cannot hide the reality. She was a mediocre actress, from a mediocre background. There is significant cognitive dissonance between what she thinks she is and what she actually is
.
FWIW looking at the bridesmaids - they'd have looked better had they worn tights.

They really weren’t a good advert for Givenchy’s atelier.

And I agree Roses tights would have made them look better but then there was apparently a row about that too!

Marrying in a long white dress and a veil is crass when you are divorced and your ex-husband is still alive.

I can’t get on board with this. It’s a really awful expectation that we can only wear white if we are “pure”.

I don’t have an ex husband but I certainly wasn’t a virgin walking down the aisle 😆

that said if I got married again I wouldn’t do the big white dress and a veil. But M did a beach wedding last time so I understand having not done it and wanting to

WinnieFosterReads · 09/01/2023 10:43

No-one thinks the colour of a wedding dress denotes virginity.
I don't blame M for wanting much more expensive and bigger dresses or trying to recreate a Disney princess moment since she seems to love those references. But most people in their 30s on a second marriage just don't have those impulses. There are thousands of threads on here with women choosing dresses for their second, third weddings. Ime opting out of giant white dresses is a class and age decision rather than a virginity one.
