Tiara-gate unveiled (shameless pun)

The fact that meghan said, and Harry believed, she had spent “hours and hours” with dressmakers getting the original scalloped tiara to match the scallop veil edge shows, IMO, one of two things:

  1. meghan is a wild exaggerator and Harry is stupid. I had a high end dress custom made for my wedding. For this type of thing she would just need to hand over to the extremely experienced professionals. Meghan would have no input to this.
  2. meghan is an enormous control freak who stood over them for hours to make sure it was perfect

Harry trying to paint this unbelievably first world issue as arduous is yet another example of how ludicrously out of touch with reality she is. Poor Meghan, she went with another diamond tiara and hours of her time were wasted. I mean she had to take off time from her busy schedule of borrowing lipglosses and battling Willy’s finger to boss dressmakers around.

there is also an amusing quote somewhere about how Harry reassured Charles Meghan would not be a large cost addition for him as she “makes her own clothes”. Did she borrow her entire character from Snow White? Seal singing, dress making?

My friend took to calling it ‘The Triplets’ as each pelt was intact with all four paws and tail, and horrific glass eyes. The mouth of one was the clip to keep it on

Were there multiple legs hanging down?
It sounds too dangerous to wear in the presence of terriers.

CPL593H · 08/01/2023 15:20

I know someone who wore a family tiara at her wedding. She said it was surprisingly heavy, gave her a headache and that she was glad to take it off.

The problem is that many tiaras were designed in the era of very long hair and padded out styles and sat "in" the hair rather than "on" the scalp. They are also worn so seldom now I don't expect people get used to them. In the vanishingly unlikely event I should be called upon to wear one, I might be contemplating a wig, to get a bit of a barrier effect.

^ yes like a Gibson girl hairstyle. It softens the tiara look. That’s why I think Diana always looked stunning in a tiara. She had short hair but is was thick and feathered all around her face. Modern hair styles don’t work as well with the tiara. Can look quite harsh

Yes, they really suited Diana.

That's exactly what Marie Antoinette said about the diamond necklace before Madame Guillotine chopped of her head.

What she said just before being guillotined was an apology to the executioner for stepping on his foot.

As regards the affair of the diamond necklace, I recomment 'How to Ruin A Queen' by Jonathan Beckman.

There were! Quite short legs, but definitely legs, with claws! 12 of them!

I suspect I probably have a photo of it but it’s sufficiently long ago that it would be on a computer hard drive in shoe box somewhere, so here’s a similar one, complete with the same godawful glass eyes, but Twins rather than Triplets.

Definitely NOT terrier or cat safe!

This is very sensible advice! Anyone with an invite to the coronation should book a wig fitting ASAP, including the chaps!

Agree re: Diana having a sort of short version of the Gibson Girl look and that subsequently working well with the fam’s tiara.
However, I think the main reason Diana looked so bloody good in the ST is because it’s a girlish sort of piece - pretty rather than imposing, swirly rather than striking?

Diana never actually got old, of course, but the ST suited her best when she was barely beyond her teens.

Meghan was already older than Diana ever was by the time Meghan’s married Harry (I think, can’t be arsed to fact check myself because MN glitches and deletes my draft while I’m in another window)?

The tiara Meg actually wore is more age-appropriate for a fully grown woman, imo.

(I’m not saying that Meghan looks old, nor that looking older than a teenager is anything to be ashamed of, just that the Art Deco, clean line tiara is more sophisticated than the swirly girly one!)

Diana really had an amazing head of hair, its what they never get right in the fictionalised versions of her, it never looks as thick as she had.

Also think Camilla pulls off tiaras that more modern hairstyles can't because of her hairstyle like Kate would need a lot of backcombing or like a beehive to make the Greville work

Head n paws furs are terrifying aren't they?!

I'm always amazed that those 30s ladies in their neat suits and chic little hats felt the need to add something that in retrospect makes them look like they belong to one of the rougher families in Game of Thrones.

Orangefir · 08/01/2023 16:06

^ agree camilla with her big hair/ feathered look- compliments the boucheron tiara amazingly!

ShamedBySiri · 08/01/2023 16:07

OMG @DaughterOfPsychiatrist

That is so hideous! 😂

I wonder how the fashion arose? Is it possible that whilst a skilled furrier would design something rather wonderful (NB I don't approve of fur) but for people with a limited budget they just presented the local taxidermist with a dead fox or two and ordered them to make a stole. It's the sort of thing Baldrick would produce if given the gig.

Jokes apart but pictures of Royals and seriously rich in furs (from back in the day) rarely involved legs and glassy eyes.
These horrors were for lesser mortals.

Camilla suits big important tiaras. I wonder if she'll wear the Fringe or the Vladimir?

Orangefir · 08/01/2023 16:10

^ that’s exactly what I thought. I think she will

LOL. One of the rougher families in GoT.

Although my mother's wedding was in the 50's so perhaps fashion had moved on (leaving behind the several guests dressed à la GoT) but I'm going to post the picture of my Grandmother who was a very smart lady and didn't favour fur stiles, with or without legs. I love her velvet coat.

Perhaps that's why Anne has kept her hairstyle??

Talking of tiaras "in" hair-isn't there a pic of Princess Margaret in a bath in just a tiara?

Or maybe she has something on but it's taken to look like nothing?

I wrote a long post favouring the Vladimir and then remembered she'll be wearing a crown after some point in the service...

Orangefir · 08/01/2023 16:18

^ I think there is a pic of the queen arriving at Westminster in the Vladimir but Shem has number of changes throughout the ceremony

That is a beautiful coat and could be worn today. She looks lovely.

Orangefir · 08/01/2023 16:19

Actually no, i think it was the coronation dress used for the state opening of parliament with the vlad tiara

ShamedBySiri · 08/01/2023 16:19

Thank you @CPL593H
I was just thinking that Catherine would look nice in it.

That was one of those pics that had people huffing and puffing that 'this will bring down the monarchy' - like those pics of HM with shock, horror, her hands in her pockets. I loved that tiara but it def needed very big 60s hair

Margaret in the bath in the Poltimore tiara

If I owned the Poltimore tiara, I would totally wear it in the bath!

StatisticallyChallenged · 08/01/2023 16:28

I think she's only worn it once, but I'd love the Delhi Durbar to get some more time out of the vault - it suited Camilla
