Tiara-gate unveiled (shameless pun)

The fact that meghan said, and Harry believed, she had spent “hours and hours” with dressmakers getting the original scalloped tiara to match the scallop veil edge shows, IMO, one of two things:

  1. meghan is a wild exaggerator and Harry is stupid. I had a high end dress custom made for my wedding. For this type of thing she would just need to hand over to the extremely experienced professionals. Meghan would have no input to this.
  2. meghan is an enormous control freak who stood over them for hours to make sure it was perfect

Harry trying to paint this unbelievably first world issue as arduous is yet another example of how ludicrously out of touch with reality she is. Poor Meghan, she went with another diamond tiara and hours of her time were wasted. I mean she had to take off time from her busy schedule of borrowing lipglosses and battling Willy’s finger to boss dressmakers around.

there is also an amusing quote somewhere about how Harry reassured Charles Meghan would not be a large cost addition for him as she “makes her own clothes”. Did she borrow her entire character from Snow White? Seal singing, dress making?

Reading about Eugenie made me google her wedding day. She’s a stunning bride. My favourite out of all the royal weddings, love her dress.

How many tiaras does the queen have?

this shows many

LadyHaversham · 08/01/2023 00:44

I so hope the Countess of Wessex is on Mumsnet anonymously correcting all the speculative mistakes.

clyspa · 08/01/2023 01:00

I thought Meghan looked stunning on her wedding day - I really didn't see a problem with the fit to be honest.

I also loved the veil.

I admit I did think then that her hair was not quite right / I assumed she wanted casual /chic relaxed look but did feel it was more like 'shit we are out of time I'll just put it up' - certainly didn't warrant a hairdresser coming over from the US - but who cares, her day, her choice and believe it was someone she had long worked with.

BUT that was just my personal taste - it was still lovely ultimately.

I think he had included this really non-story as it was in the papers but I don't think his retelling of it kills it.

Like lots of things now he is just confirming there was something in every story reported. It's not fantastic journalism but they aren't just fabricated smear campaigns either.

I don't accept Charles or William had anything to do with what tiara was offered or worn.

I really didn’t like her wedding dress. At all.
I thought people were generally just being polite now they were gushing about it.

It just looked ill fitting, gaping, the lines didn’t sit right on her body.
It looked like something off the rail, not something that had been made for her.

And no one should have been paid for her hair, it looked like a quick low bun you’d do when your hairs annoying you down.

Her evening dress was gorgeous though, she looked amazing in that one.

I don’t think any of the Royal Brides from Diana onwards have looked their best on their wedding day apart from Beatrice and Eugenie who I both thought looked stunning, which is funny really as they have been in the firing line for their fashion choices. I really enjoyed watching Eugenie’s wedding you could feel her utter joy she felt on the day, she looked radiant.

Yes, Eugenie was a beautiful bride!

I hope we get some insight into Harry's relationship with Charles Spencer. Two things led me to wonder if they're close but it might just be availability. The first one is that his youngest daughter Charlotte Spencer wasn't a bridesmaid at the wedding even though she was the right age and the second was that his sisters attended Archie's Christening but he didn't. He attended the wedding with his wife and his older children and ex wife did too so they've got to be somewhat close

One of my fave royal brides was post Diana, Lady Sarah Chatto, I thought she looked stunning www.tatler.com/article/lady-sarah-chatto-wedding

I liked Kate's dress but didn't like her hair and tiara on the day. Meghan's would have been lovely if it fit properly, I would love to know did she lose weight or was it the intended fit

Soapnutty · 08/01/2023 02:31

She wore it quite recently with an off-the-shoulder white dress at the Ripple of Hope awards in NYC.

That’s right. I remember now. Thanks.

WeWereInParis · 08/01/2023 07:31

Maybe it will be clearer when the book comes out properly but I don't really understand the tiara story.

She chose the spencer tiara
She was then offered a choice of the queen's tiaras and chose one of them
There was a bit of a faff around borrowing it for her hairdresser

Then, she wore a different one in the end. He doesn't seem to explain this switch at all does he? Were they told it was a mistake and she couldn't really have the first one she picked? Or did she change her mind? His comment about Angela Kelly giving him a look that he interpreted as "this isn't over" suggests that she went away and plotted to stop Meghan having the tiara at all. Is that what he's implying??

XanaduKira · 08/01/2023 07:49

ShamedBySiri · 08/01/2023 00:06

I'm hoping Angela Kelly is holed up writing her third book and that will have the definitive account of tiaragate.

Me too.

And funnily enough, I'd believe her account!

Ilovelabradorcuddles · 08/01/2023 08:18

How the hell does someone give a look that implies “this isn’t over”? Genuinely struggling to visualise how such a look manifests. The pettiness of most of these grievances is astounding.

Maireas · 08/01/2023 08:43

I wonder what Meghan thinks to her veil now now that the commonwealth was classed as Empire 2.0 in their tv show?

Well quite.

I think it's all very sad that we now know that something that was believed to be a beautiful gesture was really an empty one

EdithWeston · 08/01/2023 08:56

TheRubyRedshoes · 07/01/2023 21:58

It's a great shame she didn't honour the Spencers and Diana and go with that tiara but also...that side of the family. ..

Well, the custodians of that tiara are the Countess and Earl Spencer. Usually to be worn by female relatives of the Earl, principally the Countess including on her wedding day.

Now I'm losing track of what's been said by whom, but didn't Earl Spencer question Harry's decision to marry after so short a time? Could that be a factor in the change to borrow one from the Queen's collection?

We need a Look Book.

Ideally with Angela Kelly modelling both a tiara and a corresponding facial expression at the same time.

AutumnCrow · 08/01/2023 09:03

Well yes, it would be quite hard to borrow a valuable tiara from an Earl you’re in a massive huff with and possibly not speaking to.

I agree it’s a shame about the Commonwealth veil being some sort of empty gesture. I had thought it it meaningful and it was, it seems, meaningless to the bride and groom. All very odd.

Candleabra · 08/01/2023 09:10

Nothing puts an uncle back in his place like a refusal to wear the family tiara.

It sounds like a stage direction

Also, if (and it's an entirely speculative 'if') the reported difficulties between the Earl and Harry led to a late change in choice of tiara. then it also explains why the Earl would be at the wedding (already invited, still an expectation of the row blowing over with the passage of time, far too conspicuous an absence) but not invited to later events (it hadn't blown over, less high profile event than the wedding)

It's not because he was a divorcee. It was because he was an adulterer marrying the person he committed adultery with. That's a line most churches still won't cross.

My Parents divorced with my Dad’s adultery cited as the reason. My Mum could not find a CoE church to do a service for her second marriage in 1990. It was very definitely a thing and traditional Anglo-catholic churches have had strict rules until very recently. Mum wouldn’t marry in a registry office so I think it was a UR church or Baptist that agreed to them being married there.

Very much agree, Eugenie looked amazing, my favourite of the royal wedding looks and Beatrice was also fabulous. I liked Fergie's dress and styling too back in the day, the flowers/tiara transition was rather clever. I'm glad actually, considering how the York women get ripped apart for some of their fashion choices. The fact Beatrice ebayed the questionable hat for charity endeared her to me, a lot.

In terms of evening dresses, Meghan was stunning in hers, it was perfect IMO.

Yes your suggestion about the timing of the falling out between Harry and Charles Spencer makes sense Edith.

SingingWithSeals · 08/01/2023 09:28

As for stage directions...

Bets on this becoming a play written by James Graham.
