Harry and Meghan -- Why I dislike them BOTH

PipinwasAuntieMabelsdog · 03/12/2022 23:02

I keep seeing threads that say everyone who dislikes the Sussexs is based on some form of racism and I wanted to put my view across. I will set the parameters of my points:

  1. Meghan absolutely did receive racist coverage from sections of the British media.
  1. I believe that there were threats to their safety by far right loons.
  2. I believe they were both unhappy as working members of the RF

However...

I still find them both very disingenuous. They highlight and speak up against the racism of others, whilst failing to address Harry's previous and documented racist behaviour. As a Jew I cannot understand how Meghan can just remain silent about her husbands former mistakes. This makes her seem untrustworthy to me and seems like she will put up with anything for money and cache, whilst arguing (rightly) that racism is totally unacceptable. He keeps saying others need to learn and he is right, but he should acknowledge that he too needed to learn, acknowledge the support needed to help others learn and offer that support to others (including his own family, if needed).

Their attitude towards the public also seems 'off' and ungrateful to me and they seem to collocate the press and the public as the same thing. There is a lot of footage of the public support for them before, during and after their wedding. Yet, apparently, they did not want the big public wedding and the 'UK' was racist towards them. Harry particularly understands the 'deal' between the monarchy and the public and ought to have explained this to Meghan, the comments re the wedding on Oprah came across as quite spiteful and tone deaf. Almost like, 'we suffered through the big wedding for the plebs.' Ditto all the strange behaviour around Archie's birth. They could have followed the Tindall's approach if they wanted to avoid press intrusion.

During financial pressures around the world they are still complaining and not acknowledging their wealth and privilege, whilst claiming to give voice to the needs of those living in poverty and suffering. The Africa interview was a prime example for both of them. It just all comes together to make them feel untrustworthy to me, and makes me dislike them. I do not wish them any ill, but I wish they would acknowledge their fortune and live private, useful lives.

They could have had a life of fun and service together. The only reason they need all this ££ is because they both want the Hollywood razamataz. Harry has no concept of what the standard of living and security he is accustomed to costs. Meghan ought to have more of an idea, but seemingly not. They could have bought an amazing but slightly smaller house, in a less high profile area and lived off their money and still been philanthropic figures.

So, basically, two people you don't know, that you don't pay for, whose life does not affect you in any way, should have planned their lives according to your plan for them, dear random stranger on the Internet.

Got it.

Cornelious · 04/12/2022 05:20

Your first three points are enough, the rest is victim blaming and apologist. The RF have shown their racist ways (amongst other things!) and it'll come out the documentary.

ElmoNeedsThePotty · 04/12/2022 05:21

What sickens me is their constant going on about racism yet not an utter peep about classism.

The titles are way too valuable to ditch.

Agree with mrsmaxdewinter

I feel sorry for them. I do think a few things they said are a bit tone deaf but I think they are well meaning. They don't want to fade into anonymity; they want to use their high profile to make a positive impact on the world, like Diana did - that's still admirable.

They also don't have many options for work that will pay enough to keep them safe - as son of the king there will always be threats to Harry's family - I really think the royal family should be paying for their security, so I can't blame Harry for looking for other opportunities to make money and continue their lifestyle.

The press are awful and there has been so much negative spin against them. They just want to counteract it by giving their side. I mean wouldn't you? Even if they tried to live private lives, the press wouldn't leave them alone, they'd be making up stories, and they're probably doing it now. I personally wouldn't want untruths to stand, especially for my children. I'd want my side to be on the record. They tried with Oprah, and some people still don't believe that Meghan was subject to racism.

I don't love how they are raking over it all on Netflix and a book, but I'm not going to watch or read it. People can choose to ignore them - it's really not that hard.

You’re writing paragraphs about people you don’t know anything about in real life

How nasty are you!! First you say you are ‘sick to your stomach’ then you are amused? Pick a theme and stick to it. If you don’t like the discussion, go elsewhere.

They want people to talk about them!! It’s why they’ve released books, a podcast and a documentary. Unfortunately for them, they only want adoration and it’s not happening.

What a deeply unpleasant and attacking post. So often see similar posts from people who clearly believe themselves to be kind and holding the correct views.

doubleshotcappuccino · 04/12/2022 06:22

Kate was on home ground when this all started to escalate - sister, friends, mum .. she was in a position of power and privilege in every way . However, she chose to never speak out to condemn the racism or visibly show her support for Meghan. Let's take this thread's opening salvo about Meghan and say could Kate not have helped by taking Meghan under her wing and slowly welcoming her to the fold to demonstrate this person of colour was welcome. Kate heads up an anti bullying initiative but her silence spoke volumes. The problem is the RF's strategy here as alienated a whole tranche away from them. So, if you love the RF then this is not good news because people like me feel that love and loyalty died with the Queen. I just can't feel invested in people who don't speak up against bullies. The issue that the RF have is that the global wattage of Meghan and Harry outshines Kate and William and these desperate pieces in the press saying William, Charles et al don't care demonstrates just how much they do. Strange Meghan and Harry get this vitriol and not Andrew... I would save my wrath for him

RoachPussy · 04/12/2022 06:23

Why are you so invested in people that you don’t like as much as you say? If I saw a news article or program regarding a topic or people I don’t like I wouldn’t read or watch it. By engaging with media posts you’re fuelling the fire.

Mamaneedsadrink · 04/12/2022 06:26

Random question, was this show intended to come out around this time? (Ie did they wait for the Queen to pass first? Or would it have anyway? )

BellePeppa · 04/12/2022 06:35

Ivyonafence · 03/12/2022 23:42

Just curious, what good would it do for Megan to go on record condemning something Harry did when he was a teenager and has already apologised for? How would that even work? Would she make an instagram post or what?

She'd be ripped to shreds and accused of attention seeking and throwing Harry under the bus.

The woman can't win no matter what she does.

She can’t win because she is a proven liar, manipulative and disingenuous so people’s default position is that she is untrustworthy unless proven otherwise. She is to blame for that, so if she ‘can’t win’ what ever she does, well that’s on her.

Agree

I agree with you OP.
Two things can be true at once; I absolutely believe Meghan received more criticism due to her race which is abhorrent. I also really don't like either of them.
The problem is that nuance seems to have all but disappeared in public discourse.

I think it was their absolute right to step back from royal duties in pursuit of a private life. But why, then, are they chasing publicity now? Netflix series about their private life, a memoir of his recollections of their private life in the last 6 years etc...
They claim to be advocates for mental health yet, to my mind, continually bully William and Kate particularly in the press as they know they are unable to respond to allegations like "normal" people as one day they will be King and Queen.
We the plebs must not fly to save the environment yet they take private jets everywhere.

There's a ton of examples but I find them hypocritical and self indulgent. The world is getting more unstable by the minute - people are suffering in Ukraine, China, Ethiopia through war, authoritarian regimes, draught and famine, as well as most people worldwide suffering economically. If it wasn't so droppingly tone deaf that we are supposed to sympathise with them, it would be laughable.

This is my take too

electricmoccasins · 04/12/2022 07:07

I thought they had already told us 'their truth' on Oprah. What more is there to say?

And yes, one newspaper, we know which one, was often brutal about MM esp. the double standard with Catherine. But we all know that newspaper is pretty much trash. She needed to grow a thick skin and ignore it.

DriftwoodOnTheShore · 04/12/2022 07:10

Mumsnet has an expression for them.

They are goady fuckers.

And yet you're doing exactly that by responding to this thread aren't you?

Prescottdanni123 · 04/12/2022 07:14

I loved Meghan until her behaviour revealed who she really was. Racism has nothing to do with it. I would think her actions were just as awful if she were white.

Kalasbyxor · 04/12/2022 07:15

The speak very highly of you, OP.

WeAreTheHeroes · 04/12/2022 07:18

If you've started this thread about people you don't know and have never even met, what do you do when you decide you dislike someone you do know?

Honestly, you're entitled to an opinion but why on earth do you think it's okay to post here and declaim this utter bs? Whatever happened to "if you don't have anything nice to say..."? You don't sound like a very nice person.

Me too.
I thought it was great that they were going to the US to be an independent couple.
However they’re not independent, their whole careers seem to be based on talking about the family they so despise.

Tillylime · 04/12/2022 07:20

@WeAreTheHeroes
Whatever happened to "if you don't have anything nice to say..."?

perhaps H&M should follow this advice.
