First visit of royal tour cancelled because of local protest

Just seen on sky news William and Kates visit to a farm in the Caribbean was cancelled becsuse of a local protest. I am with these locals. From their point of view why should those two very entitled unelected multi millionaires who have virtually nothing to do with their country be visiting and expecting to be honoured and bowed and scraped to. They are no better or important than anybody else.

How much is this heck of a lot of money you are talking about.

As things stand now, CW countries are not even visa exempt.
We give aid to poor countries, and all these countries will simply fall under that umbrella with the rest of the non-cw countries if they need.

As for the scholarships etc. all can fall under the British Council with the rest of the non-cw countries.

What is so exceptional about cw countries. What is all this extra money you think they receive. How is Barbados suffering ?

OMG, this camera man did not just say 'what is the point?' during W&K visit.

It's mostly on here, notanotheroneagain (click on the annual report tab for 2020/21):
commonwealthfoundation.com/resource/commonwealth-foundation-annual-report-2020-21/

And interesting about the land dispute, Natfemale; I didn't know that, and as ever the background's so much more informative than a few silly headlines

notanotheroneagain · 22/03/2022 19:17

There is nothing unique in that report that could not be done by the country as we do for others. Nothing that they our different donations would not do as a country who is not within the commonwealth, or that the British Commission would not be able to handle. Talk about job creation. As I said, what has Barbados lost ?

@Natfemale, best you read the whole thread as it's been explained that the charity that William heads is only part of the story. K&W are not wanted in the Caribbean.

I'd have to dig further into the numbers, notanotheroneagain, but AFAIK the FCO don't knock off amounts in aid because of what countries have already had from the Commonwealth Foundation - not least because it comes from a "different pot"

As for Barbados, I guess it's early days to know if they'll lose anything at all, but then it's a fine and resourceful island who'll probably be more than capable of running themselves

notanotheroneagain · 22/03/2022 19:59

Just re-read my response and typing fast, I would like to say thanks @Puzzledandpissedoff for somehow making out what I was trying to say there.

Yes, other countries are doing well without the being members of the cw, and they are very much capable of running themselves, I would say, they are running themselves very well.

Doesn't look like the British media is covering what is really happening.
No wonder people are confused.

@ notanotheroneagain

Doesn’t look like much of a protest ? Maybe we should wait and see how the visit pans out .

BadgerB · 22/03/2022 20:45

How would a President be better/cheaper? Yes, we could vote for him/her but that would mean a large proportion of voters wouldn't get their choice.

Roussette · 22/03/2022 20:59

No different to Brexit surely. Over 48% didn't want it.

BadgerB · 23/03/2022 03:23

@Roussette

True, but Brexit is still divisive. Maybe it would have been better never to have introduced it. Though I do see that this attitude could be taken too far and no change would ever be made.

It's 3.20 am and I can't sleep - perhaps I'm making even less sense than usual...

notanotheroneagain · 23/03/2022 08:16

The optics of this tour get worse and worse by the hour.
Killing monkeys? Why show KM greeting kids behind chain fence, and she was spotted recoiling from a black minister.

@HollowedOut

I really hope this is the beginning of more of this sort of thing. It’s so embarrassing for both the UK royals to still think it’s appropriate to have a presence in these countries and for the people of these countries to be expected to curtsey and put on a show for these unelected spongers.
This is no less embarrassing in the UK tho?

I've seen it being reported in a few papers, one in particular that is usually very keen on Kate and William.

WinnieTheW0rm · 23/03/2022 09:32

It's being reported across nearly all MSM - size of protest ranging from few dozen, via the symbolic 60 to 350.

Whereas the 'hundreds' turned out to welcome them

Roussette · 23/03/2022 09:37

The optics of this picture is absolutely appalling. So say, everything is massaged and promoted to show the best of the RF, but surely PR aides would realise this is not a good look in Jamaica where there's protests anyway. Or are they just clueless

Samcro · 23/03/2022 09:42

@Roussette wow that is an awful picture. makes you wonder who sets these things up.

notanotheroneagain · 23/03/2022 09:45

I think this is more than a dozen.

The letter was written by respected DRs, professors, business leaders etc.

SnottyLottie · 23/03/2022 09:47

Photos of Raheem Stirling at the same event. Are these considered equally appalling?

It was over 100 who supported and gave their names to the statement.

notanotheroneagain · 23/03/2022 09:48

The British news seem to be skirting around the issue that Jamaica want to remove the queen after this tour, when they celebrate Jamaica 60th anniversary of independence.

I imagine William will not address the Meghan issue, which is also being asked (judging by their treatment of Meghan during the CW event).

Snotty
Raheem Sterling is a black footballer, not a member of the RF. Slightly different don't you think?

notanotheroneagain · 23/03/2022 09:50

Raheem was there because of K&W. So the chain was put in because of them, not him.

SnottyLottie · 23/03/2022 09:51

A black footballer who is immensely rich and now lives a very privileged lifestyle. Just like members of the RF.
