First visit of royal tour cancelled because of local protest

Just seen on sky news William and Kates visit to a farm in the Caribbean was cancelled becsuse of a local protest. I am with these locals. From their point of view why should those two very entitled unelected multi millionaires who have virtually nothing to do with their country be visiting and expecting to be honoured and bowed and scraped to. They are no better or important than anybody else.

"It's no different than saying the Kardashian are more important because they.... I actually don't have a clue what they do but you get the point."

It's very different! Representing the Head of State is worlds away from self-advertising on social media.

notanotheroneagain · 21/03/2022 12:29

@thereisonlyoneofme

I read it was down a a land dispute and the fact the villagers hadnt been consulted, not against the RF per se
It's more than the land dispute with Floral and Fauna International - for which William is a patron. More than the arrogance of the helicopter landing without permission. There is a Colonial debate going on.

All those locals smiling, are probably doing it under duress, because they will reportedly be arrested if they protest.

There is also an open letter to William from Jamaicans.

@EdithWeston

Who is more important than whom? I don't understand

The head of state is, constitutionally, more important than everyone else. This is true of every country.

The Cambridges are formally representing the Head of State, so carry that level of importance whilst in that role.

They are no more important than any of the rest of us, other than in an outdated and unelected way.

Tone deaf to be travelling with 15 staff in these times, even aside from the whole British Empire issue.

donquixotedelamancha · 21/03/2022 12:47

It's very different! Representing the Head of State is worlds away from self-advertising on social media.

How? What makes one talentless celeb better than another?

Roussette · 21/03/2022 13:03

I think it's totally tone deaf at this moment in time.
And posting a pic of the private jet taking 15 staff and various photographers is just too much

What will get talked about? The Jenny packham blue dress, wow what a trendy straw bag Kate's carrying and doesn't William look smart in his blue chinos and what dance moves he pulled

AuntMasha · 21/03/2022 14:05

They both look like a couple of colonial relics from the 1950s.

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 21/03/2022 14:20

Reading this article, seems more that the indigenous people of that village/area have an ongoing dispute over land with a conservation group that have named William as their patron rather than with W&K themselves, so possibly nothing to do with "colonialisation". Also wondering why the other (non-UK) colonies in the world are never mentioned in discussions online about how outdated colonialisation is.

springtimeishereagain · 21/03/2022 14:29

@notanotheroneagain -
If the queen is going to gaslight black people by calling racism 'recollections may vary', they should not expect the warmest welcome.

Eh?? That was the Palace response to Meghan's allegations of racism. Meghan, who lied about when she got married and lied about not knowing who Harry was... 🤔

Btw, Meghan is mixed race.

But I have no idea how this translates into 'the queen gaslighting all black people'!

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 21/03/2022 15:41

Spot on!
MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 21/03/2022 15:47

Oh, @ancientgran - so now you’re deeming Meghan Markle not to be ‘black’ but ‘mixed race’?!

Viviennemary · 21/03/2022 15:52

I agree with Roussette. This tour is totally tone deaf and inappropriate at the present time.

How? What makes one talentless celeb better than another?

But they (W&K) are not "celebs", they are representatives of the Head of State of that country.

Whether they are talentless is irrelevant

notanotheroneagain · 21/03/2022 17:02

@springtimeishereagain
Meghan never said she did not know who Prince Harry was, she said she did not know much about him. Directing this to someone who knew Harry personally. I'm not even gonna go too much into the paper thin desperation of saying she lied about her wedding, when she never disputed the legality of the tv wedding, and said they had their own personal wedding. You just sound dumb.

What next? Barack Obama, Alicia Keys, Lenny Kravits, Bob Marley, Thandiwe Newton, Gugu Mbatha Raw etc. are not black? I hope people are not walking around sprouting this level of ignorance.

springtimeishereagain · 21/03/2022 17:14

@notanotheroneagain - she absolutely did lie: She said: 'You know, three days before our wedding, we got married. No one knows that. The vows that we have framed in our room are just the two of us in our backyard with the Archbishop of Canterbury.”

She was then forced to go back on this when the papers found their marriage licence:

'Stephen Borton, former chief clerk at the Faculty Office, told the publication: “I’m sorry, but Meghan is obviously confused and clearly misinformed.

“They did not marry three days earlier in front of the Archbishop of Canterbury. What I suspect they did was exchange some simple vows they had perhaps written themselves, and which is fashionable, and said that in front of the Archbishop – or, and more likely, it was a simple rehearsal.”

And she also repeatedly lied other things, such as about cooperating with the authors of Finding Freedom. So I wouldn't put too much credence on her allegations of racism.

Roussette · 21/03/2022 17:26

Jamaica not happy. Official statement. Don't blame them given Windrush, and delaying a deportation flight until after their visit. These are people who've lived here for decades

"we will not participate in your Platinum Jubilee celebration!” the letter reads.

“We see no reason to celebrate 70 years of the ascension of your grandmother to the British throne because her leadership, and that of her predecessors, have perpetuated the greatest human rights tragedy in the history of humankind.

“We are of the view that an apology for British crimes against humanity, including but not limited to, the exploitation of the indigenous people of Jamaica, the transatlantic trafficking of Africans, the enslavement of Africans, indentureship and colonisation is necessary to begin a process of healing, forgiveness, reconciliation and compensation.”

donquixotedelamancha · 21/03/2022 17:27

But they (W&K) are not "celebs", they are representatives of the Head of State of that country.

Yes, you said that. I asked how they are different?

Whether they are talentless is irrelevant

I'm just using 'talentless celebs' to distinguish between the royal family/Kardashians etc and those who are famous through achievement or skill.

Roussette · 21/03/2022 17:37

I need to correct post.
It's not an official statement from Jamaica but does carry a lot of weight

Link

smilesy · 21/03/2022 17:40

Jamaica not happy. Official statement.

It isn’t an “official statement*. It’s an open letter from a coalition of various people.

An open letter reportedly backed by a coalition of 100 CEOs, politicians, solicitors, activists, doctors, musicians and creatives
It says: “We will not participate in your Platinum Jubilee celebrations

smilesy · 21/03/2022 17:40

@Roussette. Cross post 🤪

Roussette · 21/03/2022 17:41

Which is why smilesy I corrected my post.
As you can see

Roussette · 21/03/2022 17:42

Hehe Wink

And then I missed your post!

notanotheroneagain · 21/03/2022 17:42

Kate and William are literary YouTubers !
Not that successful either.

smilesy · 21/03/2022 17:46

@Roussette no worries. It’s a shame we don’t get some sort of “there have been new posts” update to avoid this situation 🤣

Roussette · 21/03/2022 17:54

And my internet is slow. And I'm on a mobile which takes me aaaaages!

As far as Windrush people being deported, I fine the whole situation quite revolting. They've been here since before 1971 FFS.

An ex flatmate of mine, her dad was part of Windrush, he was a bus driver, and eventually ended up as County Councillor and ran for Mayor of a large city I used to live in. I have no idea of her circs now

BadgerB · 21/03/2022 18:05

But they (W&K) are not "celebs", they are representatives of the Head of State of that country.

Yes, you said that. I asked how they are different?

  1. not being celebs
  2. being representatives of H.M
