First visit of royal tour cancelled because of local protest

Just seen on sky news William and Kates visit to a farm in the Caribbean was cancelled becsuse of a local protest. I am with these locals. From their point of view why should those two very entitled unelected multi millionaires who have virtually nothing to do with their country be visiting and expecting to be honoured and bowed and scraped to. They are no better or important than anybody else.

@SnottyLottie

Photos of Raheem Stirling at the same event. Are these considered equally appalling?
The photo of Kate out of context can raise an eyebrow, but countless others have done the same, which would suggest its more to do with procedures there than her saying she wants it to be like that.
Samcro · 23/03/2022 09:53

why was the fence put up?

Roussette · 23/03/2022 09:54

Oh don't be ridiculous. We are meant to look up to the RF, William's mother is head of the Church and Head of State and he is a future King.

You cannot say Raheem is the same as William. (that's really funny actually, thanks for the laugh)

SnottyLottie · 23/03/2022 09:54

I can’t say for all of the places they visited, but in most sports areas there are fences up around pitches and training areas. It’s the same in the UK.

Like I said, I can’t verify this for everywhere they went in Trench Town though.

BBC article on Jamaica removing the British monarch as head of state.

Clock the date.

This has been 'about to start' for a decade. I really don't see why the Jamaican government hasn't found the time to turn their stated policy into action at some point since then

notanotheroneagain · 23/03/2022 09:55

A black footballer who has been making donations and sending care packages to Jamaicans !

SnottyLottie · 23/03/2022 09:56

Who looks up to the the Royal Family? I certainly don’t and I’m not a Christian so don’t care much for the church! I look up to Raheem Sterling though (I’m a Man City fan, ducks 😆)

notanotheroneagain · 23/03/2022 10:01

There have been rumblings from a lot of CW countries. In all, most people saw the RF is a harmless entity that is just there. It has been their recent disgusting treatment of a a person of colour within their own family that a lot of people of colour are taking offence to. This is now evident, and a big step has been taken by Barbados.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 23/03/2022 12:10

The optics of this picture is absolutely appalling

It certainly is, though as usual I'm interested in the context
Were the spectators deliberately kept behind a fence, or was ir perhaps an area they chose themselves for "a quick look", and which W&K walked over to so as to avoid looking as if they'd missed them out?
Awful as it looks, without the detail it could be another example of a photo meaning whatever we want it to

SnottyLottie · 23/03/2022 12:26

I think that if the photo was taken during the football segment, then the fences would have already been up. Many sport facilities and training grounds have fences up to keep people out during practise. It’s the same over in the UK.

There was also a fence behind them during the bob sled segment. So it most probably is just the standard practise of fencing sporting facilities off.

In most of the other photos I’ve seen of them that day they seem to be separated by normal height crowd barriers and they are shaking hands with the general public.

I have no idea on the fencing, the how and why or any of that.... I just would've thought an aide would say... perhaps this might not be a good look in a pic, come over here and say hello at this low fence or whatever. It's just how it looks that is all.
Especially when there has been some dissent on this tour

Serenster · 23/03/2022 12:52

Any excuse to find something to denigrate, as usual. Plus ca change…

(Here is Bob Marley himself playing football at the Trenchtown football field. Note the fence behind him - clearly it’s been there for many years. It’s hardly the Cambridge’s fault if loads more people turned up to see their visit than could be accommodated within the grounds itself…)

Roussette · 23/03/2022 13:03

It's not 'any excuse'. Many have said it's not a good look and could've been avoided.

The pic of Bob Marley must be about 60s or possibly 70s I would imagine. We're now 2022. Times and attitudes have changed in the last fifty plus years.

SnottyLottie · 23/03/2022 13:03

It doesn’t quite work like that Rousette. There wouldn’t be any low fencing or such for a better photo opportunity. They would have to physically leave the enclosure and they would all be swarmed. It wouldn’t surprise me if they had to do a one way system to get in and out for security reasons. It’s not just the royals security would have to worry about, lots of expensive footballers being allowed to do this by their wealthy football clubs. It’s probably the same reason that Sterling shook hands through the fence rather than go around.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 23/03/2022 13:03

Agreed once again, Roussette, though I've no doubt that some would then have said, "Look at this!! People of colour both caged AND ignored!!"

As you know I'd rather their positions didn't exist so they weren't there at all, but presumably the various Caribbean governments invited them, and I can't quite see them doing that if a majority really objected?

Roussette · 23/03/2022 13:04

You know the grounds there do you Snotty?
Doubtful !

SnottyLottie · 23/03/2022 13:11

The fences have to be high to keep the ball within the perimeter. Or else they’d lose the ball 😆

It’s to also stop stupid people from entering the enclosure when professionals are training. These footballers are worth a fortune, they don’t want someone coming in to slide tackle them (or worse) and cost them their star players for the season.

It’s standard at most football facilities, especially small ones who can’t afford big sprawling grounds.

Serenster · 23/03/2022 13:13

It's not 'any excuse'. Many have said it's not a good look and could've been avoided

Yes, it could have been avoided by them all ignoring the large crowd of locals who had gathered outside the fenced off ground to cheer them. In which case we would doubtless be seeing gleeful tweets and comments about how this “not a racist family” choose not to engage with the locals.

Instead they did go over to interact with the crowds that had gathered, and we see gleeful tweets and comments about how this “not a racist family” were acting in a tone deaf and inappropriate way.

To people determined to find offence at everything they do, there is no winning, so they may as well do what they want, which here meant interacting with he people who had come to see them.

Roussette · 23/03/2022 13:17

I don't agree, Serenster, but what's new Grin

SnottyLottie · 23/03/2022 13:19

This used to be Man City and united’s training ground. They had to put fences and curtains around to stop people trying to get in and take photos whilst they were training. Football fans are another breed all together unfortunately. Anyhoo, City and United eventually got new training grounds with better security measures. I couldn’t tell you much about Trench town football club but I doubt they have the sponsorship or funds to improve conditions unfortunately.

I found tone deaf the Daily Mail’s reporting on tbe home page - www.dailymail.co.uk/galleries/article-10643665/Kate-William-swimming-SHARKS.html

However , I am moderately surprised & pleased to see that article has been archived and instead tbe focus now is on local protests . That’s tbe news story, surely, rather than how they look at each other when diving

The fences have been there with gates. In general, celebrities and footballers do not shake hands through the gates (bearing in mind, said celebrities do not have a colonisation history hanging over them). Nevertheless, they should have just waited to open the gates and talk to the people next to them rather than over a chain wall - which signifies a lot.

Samcro · 23/03/2022 14:37

maybe they shouldn't have gone somewhere that had fences like that round it.
what ever the reasons. the picture looks awful.
