First visit of royal tour cancelled because of local protest

Just seen on sky news William and Kates visit to a farm in the Caribbean was cancelled becsuse of a local protest. I am with these locals. From their point of view why should those two very entitled unelected multi millionaires who have virtually nothing to do with their country be visiting and expecting to be honoured and bowed and scraped to. They are no better or important than anybody else.

The whole trip should be cancelled. I agree with you.

SalsaLove · 19/03/2022 13:50

Absolutely agree, and also wish the whole trip would be cancelled. It’s completely tone deaf.

EdithWeston · 19/03/2022 13:54

They are there because they were invited.

They are representing HMQ who is head of state for Belize (where the protest occurs) and so they are more important than others.

I don't know the strength of the republican movement in Belize, but it is embarrassing for their government that they had to change itinerary for their invitees

Chilledchablis1 · 19/03/2022 14:00

HM will have asked ( ie told) them to go . It’s not as if W and C decided themselves to do this tour !
What will interesting will be what news comes out of California in an attempt to upstage the tour .

Plainly plenty of people in Belize don't consider them 'more important' than the people that actually live and work there and contribute to the economy. What qualifications does it take to be head of state? That is right - nothing except an accident of birth. What a load of baloney.

A8888 · 19/03/2022 14:23

This is wonderful and I hope more countries do it. If there are protests this summer for the jubilee I'll be there.

Roundlampshade · 19/03/2022 14:28

Is this the beginning of the end? What will Peter Morgan do for a job if there is no more Crown?

Of course there will be people with that view. But it does not alter their current constitutional arrangements, and that he Cambridges are representing the country's Head of State. Which has a unique importance

Completely agree.

Begs belief really. The Ukraine situation, terrible utilities hikes in Britain, etc.

HollowedOut · 19/03/2022 17:09

I really hope this is the beginning of more of this sort of thing. It’s so embarrassing for both the UK royals to still think it’s appropriate to have a presence in these countries and for the people of these countries to be expected to curtsey and put on a show for these unelected spongers.

bonfireheart · 19/03/2022 17:15

Good

Who is Peter Morgan?
AuntMasha · 19/03/2022 17:21

Good.

The Queen will continue to be Head of State until the country in question requests otherwise, at which point planning for the handover will begin. Well-trodden path.

It's not embarrassing to be similar to Canada, Australia, NZ and a dozen other countries. Nor is inappropriate for a country to invite its Head of State to tour.

Malariahilaria · 19/03/2022 17:49

Utterly tone deaf given the Ukraine situation to fly off for a sun soaked holiday costing the hosts £££££ so the natives can wave at them. Hope there are more protests.

Hardly a "sun soaked holiday" is it?

They have been invited to represent the Queen. If a commonwealth country decide they no longer want to be "in the club" then they leave. Easily done.

BadgerB · 19/03/2022 18:04

.... and how does it affect the terrible situation in Ukraine?

Would it help at all if they stayed at home?

It's embarrassing that the queen is head of state and an embarrassing relic from colonial times...

Glad we are finally taking small steps to move into the modern age!

Nasty thread

DesertStorms · 19/03/2022 18:10

Who invited them?

AuntieMarys · 19/03/2022 18:12

Good. The royals are an achronism

GreenClock · 19/03/2022 18:15

I’m looking forward to the long weekend in June but I find the Royals a bit absurd tbh. I don’t want a bloody revolution like France’s or Russia’s Grin but I’d be happy with a republic eventually.

Nasty thread
Why?
EdithWeston · 19/03/2022 18:25

@DesertStorms

Who invited them?
Normally it is the host government, but of course there are continual exchanges between governments and their heads of state and no formal/specific invitation will be made until officials have established that the plans are mutually acceptable/workable/desirable.

Obviously the more places that want to host a visit, the more extensive the preparatory work needs to be (if they can be combined in to one tour - like when Prince Harry visited 7 countries on a tour in 2016)
