First visit of royal tour cancelled because of local protest

Just seen on sky news William and Kates visit to a farm in the Caribbean was cancelled becsuse of a local protest. I am with these locals. From their point of view why should those two very entitled unelected multi millionaires who have virtually nothing to do with their country be visiting and expecting to be honoured and bowed and scraped to. They are no better or important than anybody else.

My impression was that the British govt asks the Royals to do visits for diplomatic purposes but I do wonder if the countries concerned actually want them there, or if they grudgingly agree. What’s in it for them?

upinaballoon · 20/03/2022 14:39

@GreenClock

I’m looking forward to the long weekend in June but I find the Royals a bit absurd tbh. I don’t want a bloody revolution like France’s or Russia’s Grin but I’d be happy with a republic eventually.
How do you see an "eventual republic" coming about?

Good on them for questioning this silly photo op tour at this difficult time

I was in Belize in February. I'm not surprised at this at all

ClariceQuiff · 20/03/2022 21:53

Good for the locals! I support them.

Chilledchablis1 · 20/03/2022 22:47

Not all of the villagers were against W and C visiting . Some see it as a missed opportunity.

HeadNorth · 21/03/2022 07:45

Some see it as a missed opportunity.

Opportunity to do what - grovel to the colonial masters? I cannot see what benefit some overprivileged Brits visiting will have for the people of Belize.

Maybe you should check the news reports ?

WellNotReally · 21/03/2022 08:48

@EdithWeston

They are there because they were invited.

They are representing HMQ who is head of state for Belize (where the protest occurs) and so they are more important than others.

I don't know the strength of the republican movement in Belize, but it is embarrassing for their government that they had to change itinerary for their invitees

Who is more important than whom? I don't understand.
notanotheroneagain · 21/03/2022 08:49

So tone deaf to go out dancing and partying at this time of war.

If the queen is going to gaslight black people by calling racism 'recollections may vary', they should not expect the warmest welcome.

Locals have to pay for this. Good on those protestors.

ssd · 21/03/2022 08:55

I can't understand the deference shown here to the royal family. At least the locals in Belize had more sense. I always feel supporting the royal family makes some posters feel a bit superior here. Strange really.

felulageller · 21/03/2022 08:58

Yes MN is weirdly feigning to the RF which isn't in keeping with other liberal views which dominate here.

The commonwealth is absurd. Hopefully when Q goes the rest will follow wonderful Barbados.

jessy100 · 21/03/2022 09:02

Good stuff. Now let's cancel the whole lot of them. Workshy overprivlledged non entities.

EdithWeston · 21/03/2022 09:05

The head of state is, constitutionally, more important than everyone else. This is true of every country.

The Cambridges are formally representing the Head of State, so carry that level of importance whilst in that role.

Whose · 21/03/2022 09:06

This is great.
Hopefully more and more people will come to realise that there's no need for a family to be important by pure birthright and for a public tube forced to fund them.

jessy100 · 21/03/2022 09:29

There is a surprising number of royal boot lickers on mn!. I'd like to thank Queenie for the extra bank holiday in june. We have booked a European break for a few days. No bloody way were we staying here for all the jubilee crap😃

MythicalBiologicalFennel · 21/03/2022 09:55

Just seen the pictures of W&K dancing and tasting chocolate Hmm This doesn't sit right with me. War in Europe, femicide, climate crisis, Covid on the rise, on the brink of an economic meltdown and this is the RF's response? Put those pictures in sepia and they could be from a century ago. How can they be so tone deaf?

Chilledchablis1 · 21/03/2022 09:59

What a crowd of miseries ! The locals in all the footage looked happy . W and C are doing a job . A job they have been asked to do . Should they walk around dressed in black with sombre expressions ? Get a grip .
Should all comedy programmes be cancelled because of the atrocities ? Should laughing be banned ?
Give me strength.

roarfeckingroarr · 21/03/2022 10:13

Agree - nasty chippy thread

@ jessy100

Don’t you dare accuse me of saying / implying something I didn’t

ancientgran · 21/03/2022 10:50

I read the villagers were in a dispute with a conservation charity that William is patron of. So is the issue royalty or conservation?

ancientgran · 21/03/2022 10:52

So which black people has she said that to? If you mean MM she isn't black she's mixed race. As the white mother of mixed race children I'm sick of the racism that writes white parents out of our children's lives.
thereisonlyoneofme · 21/03/2022 11:08

I read it was down a a land dispute and the fact the villagers hadnt been consulted, not against the RF per se

donquixotedelamancha · 21/03/2022 11:39

I’m sure W & K weren’t too bothered though. Day off chillin’ in the hotel.

As opposed to their usual days working down t'pit?

donquixotedelamancha · 21/03/2022 11:45

I don't think that job makes them more important than other people. Someone working in a shop or driving a bus is much more productive and useful than them.

It's no different than saying the Kardashian are more important because they.... I actually don't have a clue what they do but you get the point.
