The royal family

In what capacity are Harry and Meghan visiting New York

They are no longer working members of the Royal Family so have they gone to New York as private citizens?

How do they get to meet with Chelsea Clinton at the WHO offices and UN officials and politicians?

According to the Mail (I know, I know) they had federal protection.

Do Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex (as they are styled there) have much clout in the US? Why?

Who honestly gives a toss

StarryStarrySocks · 25/09/2021 10:32

They're basically glorified influencers.

GinIronic · 25/09/2021 10:34

Who cares?

BleachEyes · 25/09/2021 10:37

Why do you care?

LuchiMangsho · 25/09/2021 10:37

It’s not that hard to meet Chelsea Clinton. I knew her at University and met her once in my professional capacity. (She’s lovely). But there were no cameras following us and no security.
I am fairly ordinary person and we had a fairly ordinary meeting. It’s not that hard to get 15 mins with someone high profile if you also have a similar profile. It’s hard to get a meeting with someone who is a true bigwig and have a meaningful meeting where something will come out of it beyond platitudes.
All the world’s presidents and prime ministers are in NYC for the UNGA. I don’t think Harry and Meghan have met any so far. I think (unfortunately) for them this is the difference with not being officially Royal. If William was there his team would have had zero problem with lining up meetings with heads of state (he will after be head of state one day).

LuchiMangsho · 25/09/2021 10:39

(I didn’t imply I was high profile- I am a bog standard academic, I work on something the Clinton Foundation funds. What I meant was that it is much easier for two high profile people of a similar celeb standing to have a meeting where they exchange pleasantries).

Viviennemary · 25/09/2021 10:39

Global influencers I should imagine.Hmm

LukeEvansWife · 25/09/2021 10:39

They are there as people who will save the world by trotting out a few platitudes about vaccines and then fucking off until it's time to get their name in the papers again

Viviennemary · 25/09/2021 10:55

Not to mention showing off her jewellery. Whats the point of dripping in diamonds if nobody can see them. Its worse than that nursery rhyme banbery cross.

zafferana · 25/09/2021 10:57

Self promotion. What other reason is there? They aren't working royals any more. They don't represent anyone or anything apart from themselves. And the sickening thing is that everyone is falling over themselves to welcome them and hang on their every woke word. The press should ignore them, in the same way they ignore Trump now, because the most galling thing for publicity hounds like M&H is to be ignored, but they should be. Who fucking cares what they think about anything?

I met her at Oxford and she had three terrifying-looking security people with her, who looked as if they could easily kill you with their bare hands without breaking a sweat.

Ah yes that of course. But she is trying to empower women and give them a voice (cos we didn't have one until she came along) so she wears thousands of pounds worth of clothes snd jewellery to do so.

Perfectly put. They are just awful.
starrynight21 · 25/09/2021 11:03

They are Royals and they are celebrities ....the Yanks must love them.

I'm don't care. I'm interested.

Promoting her terrible book wasn't she?

LuchiMangsho · 25/09/2021 11:07

Yes I know she had security at Oxford but I didn’t (!!!) and so let’s say we were papped (hah) it wouldn’t be that interesting. Not least because I didn’t quit the Royal family. I mean as a visual spectacle it wouldn’t be worthy.

LuchiMangsho · 25/09/2021 11:20

And some of it is pure spectacle. There’s a photo where she’s reading her picture book to what looks like 8/9 year olds.
But NYC during the UNGA is all about spectacle and there will be bigger stars than Harry/Meghan (and even Chelsea C).

Reduceddutiesboredom · 25/09/2021 11:26

Imagine starting a discussion about Harry and Meghan when Prince Andrew has just admitted he’s been served papers. Surely that is of more “interest”, more importance, more noteworthy…

Or does being mean about two people you don’t know who haven’t actual done anything wrong sound more fun?

More like people are capable of thinking about more than one situation at a time.

When condemning Prince Andrew it is still possible to seen Harry as a typical Spencer (falling out with everyone) who isn't very bright and Meghan who was such a feminist empowering women to be independent that she married a PRINCE ffs

Why don't you start your own thread about Andrew then if you are so bothered. People can take an interest in all sorts of things. You sound like one of them people who when a terror attack happens in the UK, moan about "what about terror attacks in Afghanistan". Irrelevant.

Good questions OP. It's all about building their brand.

Which seems to be backfiring. Their brand is dependent on them being royal so by leaving the firm, they are losing their brand
NerrSnerr · 25/09/2021 11:46

The Harry and Meghan is baffling. Not them, but the online interest in them. I'd love to do some research on the kind of people who are so invested in them they need to discuss what they're doing in such fine detail and why they do it.

Viviennemary · 25/09/2021 11:49

There are threads on Andrew. I started one. People are concerned about him and his behaviour. Its in the Royal section. I'm not on commission honest. Grin
