The royal family

In what capacity are Harry and Meghan visiting New York

They are no longer working members of the Royal Family so have they gone to New York as private citizens?

How do they get to meet with Chelsea Clinton at the WHO offices and UN officials and politicians?

According to the Mail (I know, I know) they had federal protection.

Do Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex (as they are styled there) have much clout in the US? Why?

Sure it is, you can agree with anyone you like. Just saying she’s a great resource on the facts of these things - she’s a journalist who worked on politics for a long time, so she has good insight into why these occasions are set up, the reasons celebrities are influential in this way, who benefits and how etc. Regardless of whether you like Harry and Meghan she’s a helpful insight into why other people might want to have them at events, and the role they play at them.

She is a fan of Harry and Meghan, but has been critical of some of their past behaviours. She’s also a fan of the royal family and the work they do. I consider her to be a pretty fair and unbiased source.

Ah yes that of course. But she is trying to empower women and give them a voice (cos we didn't have one until she came along) so she wears thousands of pounds worth of clothes snd jewellery to do so.

Yep. Because marrying well (by some definitions ... ) makes a person both an expert and a role model for women's empowerment. I wouldn't mind it so much if her platform came from literally anything other than other than her husband and his bloodline.

They get to meet people because they are celebrities. In the same way Kim Kardashian can request an audience with President Trump to plead the case of a death row inmate, Harry and Meghan just need to have their people make the right inquiries.

But the only reason they can request an audience with anyone is because Harry is a Prince.

I always think that Harry is trying to replicate the work of his late mother, after she left the royal family. I could be wrong. The thing is that it was a bit different with her, and she became a global celebrity in her own right.

LuchiMangsho · 25/09/2021 17:16

And Diana’s celebrity post Royal life also came with scandal and misery and unwanted attention which he will be aware of.

As someone who lives in the US I am unaware of this enormous popularity that some blogger claims they have. They have struck some lucrative deals but I wouldn’t say they had enormous name recognition beyond the Oprah interview. But okay…it’s just my opinion based on those I live around and work with versus hers.

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 25/09/2021 17:17

Harry seems to have been particularly strongly motivated to 'save' Meghan and to then enable her to be a global humanitarian. I think this is because he was not able to do that for his mother, so he relives the traumatic situation from his childhood but tries to give it a happy ending - repetition compulsion as Freud called it.

IsabelBeck · 25/09/2021 17:19

This is @eholmes - she's a fangirl who's written a book about royal style Grin
I'll be sure to respect her Authority

Yes, that came out in the Oprah interview. He said Meghan saved him, but then she said he'd saved her. It was a strange moment. I thought they both seemed very vulnerable, and obviously struggling.

NotMaryWhitehouse · 25/09/2021 17:22

@NerrSnerr it's strange, isn't it? I suppose it's like anybody else famous/in the public eye really , there are always going to be people who develop an unhealthy obsession with them.

Some people seem to spend all their waking time thinking and talking about people (not just H & M) who they don't know and will never meet. 🤷🏼‍♀️

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 25/09/2021 17:23

Maireas, I agree, they did seem vulnerable and as if they had constructed their own private reality that they wanted to project out on the world.

Maireas · 25/09/2021 17:27

Yes, I thought that too. The suicide thing was really shocking and then afterwards he said he was woken up by her weeping in bed because of the OW interview. That's not good.

IsabelBeck · 25/09/2021 17:32

Who does that on this thread? What's the difference between those you accuse of being obsessed and you? You're the one commenting on a message board about two people you don't know.

How do they make a living though - are they paid for these appearances / meetings?

I felt incredibly sad for Harry during the OW interview. And I would hate for anyone to feel suicidal, no matter what their position is.

However, I also felt that the whole interview was unnecessary

LukeEvansWife · 25/09/2021 17:35

Diana and Meghan are similar in that they both try to manipulate the media. The reason Diana was hounded by the press was that she used to give them the heads up.

So Meghan and Harry have this victim mentality - it's all about them and their mental health and apparently suicidal thoughts.

He was mortified about the skin colour thing but other than that - this is what he signed up for
NotMaryWhitehouse · 25/09/2021 17:42

Calm down @IsabelBeck I didn't specifically mean you! 🤣

Yes, I see what you mean. But it's understandable that it happens too. We live in fractured tribes these days - yet there is still an appetite to connect and find common points of reference.

Harry and Meghan - and other celebrities - provide a kind of gossip glue that allows fragmented society to feel bonded.

Driftingblue · 25/09/2021 18:10

In the US, prince=celebrity.

Harry has the same clout someone like JFK Jr had before his death.

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 25/09/2021 18:14

They’re celebrities. Kim Kardashian and Beyoncé and Jay Z do similar stuff I suppose

donquixotedelamancha · 25/09/2021 18:45

That's a bit harsh. I don't think you should compare Harry and Megan to Beyonce. She's actually achieved things to become famous.

I'm perfectly calm, Mary I know you weren't talking about me. I wondered who you were talking about.
