In what capacity are Harry and Meghan visiting New York

They are no longer working members of the Royal Family so have they gone to New York as private citizens?

How do they get to meet with Chelsea Clinton at the WHO offices and UN officials and politicians?

According to the Mail (I know, I know) they had federal protection.

Do Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex (as they are styled there) have much clout in the US? Why?

I agree. $50,000/episode (if that's the real number) times 16 episodes per season is about $800,000/year. That's a good amount, to be sure, but it's not that uncommon. There are lots of Americans who earn that much, and most of them aren't the least bit famous. That includes quite a few people I know professionally. They're lawyers, bankers, doctors, and business owners. They're good at their specific jobs, but they're not experts on anything else, and they don't pretend to be.

They don't have a built-in platform for anything just because they're high earners, either. If they wrote a children's book that wasn't very good, neither their name nor their income would be enough to get it published. And if it did get published, they'd never in a million years be allowed to disrupt a classroom to drum up sales. Many of them have lived in NYC their entire lives without ever once meeting any elected official. Most have visited NYC at some point, and were never given the red carpet treatment, nor should they have been.

So no, Meghan's prior career is definitely not the reason for all the special treatment she's currently getting.

The point being that she was hardly A list and if she hadn't married a prince, she would still be just another jobbing actor. All the arse lickers claim it was so awful that she had to give up a successful career Grin
And if she was A-list, if she hadn’t married a prince she’d would still be just another A-list actress.

My point was more that this thread is about what capacity they’re meeting these people in New York in. They met the Deputy Secretary General of the UN today, what should be relevant is what qualifies them (or her since it’s gone down that route) to be someone the UN wants to talk to. You said upthread she’s hardly Meryl Streep, my point is that even if meryl streep met the deputy secretary general in the UN, I’d be interested to know in what capacity she did that/why they wanted to talk to her.

No idea if she got a raise, maybe email the producers and ask?! I imagine so but it's not something that vexes me given that's a lot of dosh per episode

It was you who brought it up Rousette I just thought it odd that she got paid $50k an episode for 7 years.

Anyway, it's the trip to NYC I'm interested in.

If William was there his team would have had zero problem with lining up meetings with heads of state (he will after be head of state one day).

@LuchiMangsho so would Prince William be able to request a face to face meeting with POTUS and get it do you think? Would Harry and Meghan be able to do the same?

I’m not sure what the relative success of suits vs GoT has to do with anything. Clearly suits was successful, 9 seasons is long - I personally quite liked it. But MM now obviously has a lot more influence than any of her costars from suits (or anyone from GoT for that matter), and that comes from who she’s married to, not from her prior acting work. I don’t get the arguing over whether or not she was good/successful actress, it’s irrelevant isn’t it? It’s just a job she used to do. Would it make a difference if she was bad at it? Or if she wasn’t an actress at all, but something else equally unrelated to what she now does?
The point was that people can be quite scathing about her as though she was an absolute failure before she married Harry. When the reality was very different.

My point in raising that Suits was a popular show was because others had said it wasn’t. GOT was used as a comparison.

I was trying to say that there is no need to be unkind. Whatever our views on MM, she was hardly an unemployed actress.

I am actually not a huge fan and hated the OW interview but there is no need to completely discredit them.

It's all just bizzare, I get the whole wanting to be a list famous. (yes it's some people's aspirations, not mine, far too many skeletons in the closet 😳)

But you don't see other A list celebrities reading books to school children like POTUS of First Lady. I mean we don't exactly have story time with Jay Z and Bey at county Durham Primary school 😂

I can't quite figure out what they are trying to be, like a a list celebrity/charity boss hybrid.

Makes no sense. They can't influence global policy, unlike William who will be head of state one day. No politician or bid comapny is going to listen to them. Yeah sure they will smile and say "you look nice today Meghan" but past pleasant nods there's not much else.

So I dunno really. Can't figure it out.

I don't think Meghan has the resilience to go into politics. There is a lot of personal criticism for candidates unfortunately, particularly women.

Why does anyone care so much about these people??

And does anyone think it will all survive the present Queen? the curtesying and the "working royal" (jesus) thing and the who is in and who is out and speculations on MN about who is wearing the right nail polish.

it is really really weird. Especially considering Andrew. Actually maybe they are being paid to do stuff like this so the commoners won't think too hard about Andrew?

No idea what the purpose of this foundation is, but in America, it’s not unimaginable that people viewed in the category of ‘philanthropists’ could get invited to this sort of high profile thing.
