I really think that the RF finances ought to be a lot more transparent. The tax payer ought to know what profits are made on the Duchy estate and where they go. How much each member of the family gets from the public purse and how much comes from their own wealth.
I think the situation with H and M is putting the RF under immense scrutiny and may make people much more aware of the level of their wealth and privilege . This will inevitably lead to people questioning whether they are worth it.

I just finished the Housekeeper‘a Diary, mentioned by someone else on one of these threads. Apparently every week huge piles of unwanted presents would be burned in the grounds. Large amounts of food thrown away. Lights left on all the time by Charles and Diana. They drove up separately in gas guzzling cars every week from London to Highgrove. The waste and excess is criminal, but we don’t really think about it until there is some sort of fuss in the media about one or more members. PA comes across very badly in the book, exactly as he’s represented in recent programmes. Entitled, vulgar and rude.

I just want to know if there are enough wings for everyone.

FannyCann · 09/05/2020 09:22

Large amounts of food thrown away.
Surely Diana was chucking it down the loo? Wasn't she even criticised by someone in the RF for eating when she was just going to waste it all later?

Did this period segue with the Queen's Tupperware party or did she bring her Tupperware out in the '70s? I am on alert for the image make-overs that are just about to hit our media.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 09/05/2020 09:36

I've never heard of Tyler Perry either. But then I can't tell one Kardashian from another.Grin

RosesandIris · 09/05/2020 09:39

Only vomiting , not chucking it down the loo. 😁

The stuff about C&D doesn't surprise me, the '80s were profligate times. I doubt it would have crossed C's mind to turn his own lights off. C was ahead of the game on environmental issues but even he wouldn't have been joining the dots in those days.

As for the presents, they were overwhelmed with tat that people had lovingly knitted/baked/bought for them. Hopefully people do less of that sort of thing now. The thought of it being burned is a bit sad, nowadays it would be thoughtfully regifted.

Mamamia456 · 09/05/2020 11:02

The housekeeper claimed that she never actually wanted her memoirs to be published but she felt under pressure. How true this is I don't know. When she came back years later to nurse her ill sons Prince Charles could have had her prosecuted and possibly imprisoned, but instead he forgave her.

CanIHaveAPenguinPlease · 09/05/2020 11:15

The 80’s were times of excess. Dallas, Dynasty, The Colbys. I don’t think we routinely went around switching lights off, I was a student early 80’s & i don’t remember switching lights off. And in those days we didn’t have utilities included in our rent like my D.C. has now.

C&D probably couldn’t stand being in the same car as each other so would have driven up separately.

ArchePenguin · 09/05/2020 12:29

Harry said that Prince Philip used to go around the Houses switching lights off. Maybe Charles rebelled in the 80s Grin. Until he saw the light (groan).

Yes to PP about RHiBH. Except that MM will have her own show: The Royal Housewives of Malibu. It will be a comedy and she will Ben credited with developing a new genre of RhoMcom.

Inspiralcarpetry · 09/05/2020 13:34

Oops, hope she wouldn't go down that route! I love RHONY, RHOC and RH Cheshire, but I call them Real Fishwives! Absolutely zero class but great entertainment!

Teddy1970 · 09/05/2020 13:51

If she does go down the route of a Royal wives show, I imagine the Queen would step in and either put a stop to it or strip them of their titles, although there's no evidence MM would stoop that low, at least I hope so anyway.

Teddy1970 · 09/05/2020 13:55

That said, there isn't a great deal of choice for her to make money in HW, I mean there aren't any directors banging on her door to offer film roles, well not yet anyway.

Inspiralcarpetry · 09/05/2020 13:57

I think what's interesting is although they've both made a big song and dance about not being royal etc, I truly think the royal connection is incredibly important to them. Obviously Harry because it is his identity, but her too as she is very status driven and a social climber.
Evidenced by the ridiculously pompous letters they write that reference The Duke and The Duchess (capitals no less.) Also the little crown motifs.
On that basis, I don't think they'd go TOO far in terms of trashiness. But they keep ploughing kn regardless, so who knows?!

CanIHaveAPenguinPlease · 09/05/2020 14:41

Of course being royal is important to them. Without the royal cachet - they are not A list.

ArchePenguin · 09/05/2020 14:48

The Only Way Is Sussex.

Royal HUSBAND of Malibu

Harry - my Crazy ex-Royal Life

And the birth certificate, her occupation 'Princess of the United Kingdom'.

Inspiralcarpetry · 09/05/2020 15:40

Ah, think we've got to give her that one. I remember Kate had put that when she got married. So that is a traditional thing I think.
But I bet they fucking LOVED seeing it!
Should have had this instead though...

Probationary Period: Princess of the United Kingdom. Tiara withdrawn upon fleeing said country.

Inspiralcarpetry · 09/05/2020 15:41

And bragging rights!Grin

MissEliza · 09/05/2020 16:59

Meghan was listed as princess of the United Kingdom? I bet she bloody loved that.

BarleylemonPenguin · 09/05/2020 17:05

her occupation 'Princess of the United Kingdom'. GrinGrin

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 09/05/2020 17:20

occupation 'Princess of the United Kingdom'

Tbf that is probably standard form. Although I'm surprised she didn't insist on "well-known American actor, business entrepreneur, and women's rights activist"

ajandjjmum · 09/05/2020 17:23

Obviously in addition to 'Princess' fleas!

custardbear · 09/05/2020 17:32

Not RTFT yet but can't help thinking of MM and PH flogging books whilst workng in a Petrol station like on Alan Partridge ... if I recall the episode correctly - maybe it's just my 🙄 of the whole idiotic pair!

TinRoofRusty · 09/05/2020 17:43

humanitarian, don't forget that one, their great humanitarian legacy (of sponging off taxpayers, millionaires (despite being ones themselves) and flying round in private jets).
