I used to live in Florida in a house with no air con. It was absolutely fine.

Of course it was.

LaMarschallin · 09/05/2020 06:44

I used to live in Venezuela in a house with air con.
My mother - for some reason, not environmental I believe - wouldn't use it.

Have to say it wasn't that fine, it was horribly hot. But I got used to it.

But I see your point about not having to cool/heat a whole house.
In fact, I think I made it first (when mentioning not heating the spare room).

I don't know if you actually mean it was fine in Florida w/o air con, or you're making a joke based around the "of course" thing.
My experience of Florida - purely based on Disneyworld a couple of times - was that the public areas were ridiculously over-cooled, with people putting on jerseys/cardigans when going into them.
We used to turn the air-con down (up? To less cold, anyway) in our room.

Winterlife · 09/05/2020 07:00

@TheClootieDumplin. That’s not the way central air conditioning works in North America.

We have air conditioning. I can’t “turn it off” in certain rooms. The most I can do is close vents, but that’s imperfect.

I assume a home that large will have several sets of air conditioning, for each wing.

Looks like the Yorks are having to sell the chalet as they can't pay the final instalment

“A number of the duchess’s book deals and planned documentaries were suddenly cancelled,” the source said. “As a result it was clear they would struggle to meet their financial obligations.

“The decision was made that the chalet was going to be sold to clear their debts and the situation would be resolved to everybody’s satisfaction.”

Son of a monarch, brother to a King-to-be, reliant on wife's earnings from books and documentaries - spot the difference. That should send a very strong message out to LA.

FromEden · 09/05/2020 07:06

Does a whole house have to be cooled in order for a few rooms or a specific part of it to be cooled? No. Not at all. You could have a home with 80 rooms in it and only cool one of them of that's what you wanted to do.

Our house has 2 aircon units one for upstairs, one for downstairs. Its not possible to just cool certain rooms (except the master bedroom).

It's hot, we put on the aircon. I'm sure they do too. I highly doubt they are even thinking about it.

Also, the person who said it was "fine" without aircon in Florida. Lol. No it wasn't

Leflic · 09/05/2020 07:26

TheClootieDumplin Don’t be that person.
Yes it was genuinely fine in Florida with two kids and no air con. And that’s coming from a freezing house in the U.K. Can’t see LA being any worse.

Anyway we have no idea about their living requirements.

I do wonder what Harry will do.Just go round round being a celeb promoting his charity? I ‘ll put money on him starting a production company making TV shows about animal conservation. And guess who’ll do the voice overs...

Leflic · 09/05/2020 07:31

Seriously why the doubt over the air con! Think maybe people have got too used to it perhaps? Well we didn’t have it and it wasn’t a problem. I wasn’t fat though...maybe that’s it..

TimeLady · 09/05/2020 07:33

I‘ll put money on him starting a production company making TV shows about animal conservation.

He should have a chat with his Uncle Edward first...

05/03/2002 · Despite being its "joint managing director and head of production", Edward had no formal pre-Ardent qualifications as a television researcher or producer or director, or as a broadcast journalist ...

I find it unthinkable that a high end property (such as the house they currently live in) would have anything other than climate control individual to each room.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 09/05/2020 07:39

I do have a H & M related question - who is Tyler Perry? I have googled him, and I’m still none the wiser - a hit series of films where he plays a woman called Madea? Is my ignorance in line with a high court judge asking, “Who are the Beatles?”?

LaMarschallin · 09/05/2020 07:43

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies

Is my ignorance in line with a high court judge asking, “Who are the Beatles?”?

Well, if yours is, then mine is too.

And the answer along the lines of "A popular beat combo" won't do.

How did he get to be so rich?

(Full disclosure: I muddled him up with the Tiger King person Blush)

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 09/05/2020 07:49

I always feel better when my ignorance is shared. Thanks, LaMarschallin.

TYLER PERRY is one of the leading stars in Hollywood, both on and behind the screen - so who is Tyler Perry?

www.express.co.uk/celebrity-news/1279436/tyler-perry-actor-who-is-tyler-perry-los-angeles-hollywood

I've never heard of him either.

RosesandIris · 09/05/2020 07:50

I’ve never heard of him either. I read some blurb on him but was none the wiser really.

CanIHaveAPenguinPlease · 09/05/2020 07:54

Oh thank the Lord. I’m not alone in my ignorance.

TimeLady · 09/05/2020 07:55

It sounds as though he bought it as an investment/holiday home. He lives in Atlanta. Probably doing Oprah a favour.

Winterlife · 09/05/2020 07:55

Tyler Perry is a writer, producer, and actor. He so written and produced television series and movies.

84% of Florida homes have air conditioning. It’s probably not as necessary if one lives near the ocean. Areas away from the coasts is a completely different story. Even pets can’t take that heat.

Mummyoflittledragon · 09/05/2020 07:56

I had to look him up too. There are some not too glowing reviews of his work online though. Watching a fall from grace now. He wrote, acted in, directed and produced that. It’s on Netflix btw.

Winterlife · 09/05/2020 07:56

^he has written

BarleylemonPenguin · 09/05/2020 08:00

Well, if yours is, then mine is too.

Make that three.

Most of these people are living a 'smoke and mirrors' lifestyle as in, if nobody knows who they are, unlike, e.g., Jennifer Aniston, and their show of wealth is disproportionate to this, then the 'wealth' tends to be hot air. Remains to be seen with this one. Can take years until they either finally pay off the convoluted machinations of their 'wealth', or they go bust.

FannyCann · 09/05/2020 08:24

Another one who's never heard of him.

As for air conditioning I've spent quite a lot of time in Brisbane where my sister lives.
Most homes don't have air conditioning, just ceiling fans and mozzie screens. It's very hot and humid in summer. And with houses built to be cool the winter can feel quite chilly, obviously there's no heating either. Working in the hospital was very hot work - only areas like theatres and ICU had air con. I expect that's all changed now. But I do think if you live in a hot climate it's best to embrace it, I suppose security is a problem though when it comes to having wide open windows and verandas.

TimeLady · 09/05/2020 08:34

Oprah seems to be playing the long game here. She's not a long-time friend by any means, but surely her benevolence in these trying times means she has to be first in line for the tell-all interview. Wink

Didn't Oprah groom befriend Doria first? Wasn't that how she blagged an invite to The Wedding

Oldbutstillgotit · 09/05/2020 08:41

Whew , another one who had never heard of this guy ( I assumed it’s because I am old and boring !)

BarleylemonPenguin · 09/05/2020 08:46

I have a few pressing questions. Can anyone hazard a guess at what the British taxpayer is still paying for with these three (and I don't mean Tyler)? Are the security people still there and did they have to sit at the back of the pj during the clandestine dark ops dash to freedom? Will the security personnel have their own wing, and, perhaps more importantly, will they or will they not put on their air-con? Does her entourage come and go throughout the day or only occasionally, and will there be enough bathrooms for everyone if they all find themselves in one wing at the same time?

TimeLady · 09/05/2020 08:50

Final sentence in this DM article:

But the area could prove to be too expensive if Harry and Meghan want to buy, as they no longer receive money from the British taxpayer.

Let's hope that's true.
