I read in a tabloid that Archie had a cake smash for his first birthday.

Just leaving that one here.

RosesandIris · 08/05/2020 14:46

I think the fear is litigation, not any genuine concern for people’s feelings.

Arche penguin - What's wrong with a cake smash?

OVienna · 08/05/2020 15:40

What's wrong with a cake smash?

They're horrible, in short.

How did food waste become a form of entertainment? It's not funny and it's not cute. Is this the kid's version of beering someone? Fuck's sake.

OVienna · 08/05/2020 15:41

I'm not sure why they're more concerned about celebrities who aren't actually on here but not the real people facing unkindness.

Yes, this has crossed my mind on a few recent threads.

RosesandIris · 08/05/2020 15:44

I just think it’s wrong on so many levels . On the one hand they’re lecturing everyone about the climate, being kind, looking out for others less fortunate. On the other, they’re living in a massive free mansion (hugely wasteful environmentally) taking private jets, freeloading at every opportunity. Whining about how hard their lives are when they don’t work and live off PC .
Smashing up a sugar feee organic cake for fun . Then leaving the ‘staff’ to clear it up. It’s all of a piece.

Apologies if this has already been posted but it did make me laugh, Scobie's book is being published by Rupert Murdoch. Does this mean it'll be serialised in the Sun?

I read in a tabloid that Archie had a cake smash for his first birthday

I simply don’t believe that a tabloid would have any insight into their choice of birthday party.

Cake smashes are naff anyhow; but right now, when do many people in both US and UK are depending on charities and food banks just to have enough to eat, it’s just unthinkably awful

MissEliza · 08/05/2020 17:10

Wasting food is wrong at any time. There will always be people struggling to put food on the table somewhere in the world.

LaMarschallin · 08/05/2020 17:16

Hadn't heard of cake smashing before.

It sounds revolting (as well as stupidly wasteful). I don't understand adverts, either, that are supposed to tempt you to buy something by featuring a child smeared with food.
I didn't find mess "cute" on my own; definitely not on someone else's.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 08/05/2020 17:17

Sometimes, LaMar I read your posts and wonder if you're me Grin

OVienna · 08/05/2020 17:27

Fleas I feel the same.

Inspiralcarpetry · 08/05/2020 17:28

If they did do a cake smash, I'd find that once again undignified and tone deaf.
To be fair, I really hate cake smashes done by anyone. Just don't like to see waste (*who would waste a cake you could eat, haha!) and yes, I don't care to see cake smeared faces!
I just can't imagine the royal family doing cake smashes. Princess Anne?! The Queen?! Maybe Fergie!Grin

SunbathingDragon · 08/05/2020 17:41

I haven’t read about them doing a cake smash but they seem out of tune enough that it wouldn’t surprise me. After all, think of the unnecessary expense of Meghan’s baby shower.

Perhaps it wasn’t an intended cake smash but Archie showing his revolt at being offered a sugar free cake. Grin

Nikhedonia · 08/05/2020 18:10

@MissEliza I'm sorry that happened to you and precisely shows the kind of thing I mean.

Definitely one rule for the mothers who contribute vitriol to MN (that's absolutely fine) but quite another rule for those who may sue them... Hmm

Nikhedonia · 08/05/2020 18:13

Sorry those who are on the direct receiving on of the vitriol was what I meant

7Worfs · 08/05/2020 18:22

What's wrong with a cake smash?

It’s vulgar and a bit WAG/nouveau riche.

Notmyrealname855 · 08/05/2020 18:27

Crikey this thread is so creative at slating H&M! There’s a lot you can complain about with all royals but this is like Mary Whitehouse on acid.

What’s wrong with being nouveau riche?

CanIHaveAPenguinPlease · 08/05/2020 18:28

I was coming in to say ‘what’s right with a cake smash?’

I wonder whether the people who think it’s ok are under 35? And used to excess of food. I was brought up to always remember that my mum grew up with rationing. It’s a habit that it’s ingrained in her & sort of with me, I hate waste & excess. A cake smash is excess in the extreme imo.

Nikhedonia · 08/05/2020 18:38

I'm under 35 and think cake smashes are vulgar. I can't stand food wastage.

Please I cannot for the life of me get my head around who thought this was a good idea. Cake bakers, who hope you'd buy two and not one? Hard to imagine - I know a few who have taken this up and I cant imagine it.

The point is, it's clearly someone with more money than sense.

Mummyoflittledragon · 08/05/2020 18:46

OVienna
I, too and far too long in the tooth to find cake smashes cute. I don’t think it necessarily is more money than sense for all unfortunately. Too many lines of credit and wanting to keep up with insta / slebs.

I'm now worrying that the "cake smash" might be a total tabloid fabrication, and I don't want to be judging H&M for something they wouldn't dream of doing.

I hate the idea of messing with food like this, it's very tacky and wasteful. H&M may well think the same.
