I agree they should not be able to market Sussex Royal, while living in Canada and not acting as part of the RF.

Guacamole · 18/01/2020 18:56

Will they have to take the little crown off the logo?
Actually probably yes, if their HRH has in fact has been removed. I’m not convinced it has. I expect journalists will be trying to get clarification on that.

DeRigueurMortis · 18/01/2020 18:56

So my reading of this that fundamentally this came down to money.

I suspect there was a choice of keep your HRH but we (the Palace) get a right of veto over your financial "deals" or lose them and you can do your own deals.

In the grand scheme of things not being HRH doesn't impact their marketability. A lot of people (especially in the US) won't understand the distinction between HRH the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and Harry/Meghan, Duke/Duchess of Sussex.

When Diana lost her HRH and was styled "Diana, Princess of Wales" rather than "The Princess of Wales" she was still (incorrectly) billed in the press as Princess Diana.

So fundamentally they've got what they wanted (apart from a large bill for Frogmore) but equally the Palace has created a credible distance from their future money making schemes.

MrsBrentford · 18/01/2020 18:57

They won’t “use” HRH is very different from they will “lose” HRH.

peaceanddove · 18/01/2020 18:57

By losing the HRH it means Meghan is no longer considered royal, she is just a duchess. It's what happened to Wallis Simpson, she became the Duchess of Windsor but never HRH. Edward VIII was furious that his wife wasn't given the HRH but the Queen Mother was adamant.

Rinoachicken · 18/01/2020 18:57

I want to thank them for all their dedicated work across this country, the Commonwealth and beyond, and am particularly proud of how Meghan has so quickly become one of the family

Kind of sticks to fingers up to the rumours being spread (by Meghan’s friends) that she wasn’t welcomed into the family.

BoreOfWhabylon · 18/01/2020 18:57

I hope the Queen is ok.

DeeZastris · 18/01/2020 18:59

If they are “not formally representing the queen” does this indicate that they have not stepped back from being senior members of the royal family but that they are not royals at all?

JamesBlonde1 · 18/01/2020 18:59

PH will be back in 1-2 years when they separate. Practical and financial plans will be set behind closed doors for that. Hope he sees the light sooner, rather than later.

Lilybetsey · 18/01/2020 18:59

I feel pleased they can no longer uses HRH and have not got the pt royal duties they (said that they) wanted.

Musing on this earlier I have a very real feeling that this could bring down the monarchy if not handled right. I am a monarchist and would far rather have the RF as head of state than an elected president, but even I was thinking that if M&H monetise their Sussex Royal brand, then there is no point, no mystery , no charity any longer in the RF ... Many British people are republicans and many don’t value the RF . I could see this ending 1000 years of monarchy.
So HMQ who cares more for her duty and the survival of the monarchy had to play hardball ... and I think this is hardball ...

I bet Meghan is furious !

The marriage is in trouble already ( I think) and H has agreed to this to keep his family together ... what’s she lost ? Nothing it’s all gain to her, he’s lost his family, respect if the British people, respect of the military , his friends, his country and any semblance of a worthwhile job.

I hope she is worth it ...

notmoresheep · 18/01/2020 18:59

well the last thread went a bit tin foil hat for a while there.

is everyone OK? I’m not OK, stinking cold.

HRH gone, good. No longer representing the queen, fantastic. They’re on their own. Without HRH, SussexRoyal looks pretty hollow and meaningless, its just plain Sussex now. Web address change to SussexCommon perhaps?

I’m pleased they’re repaying the money for Frogmore, but what about the £20 million we shelled out for their wedding? Bloody cheeky if they’re looking at £20 million houses (although he’s not, if I went househunting without DH he’d be hurt and annoyed).

AppropriateAdult · 18/01/2020 18:59

Why would they be stripped of their titles? Beatrice and Eugenie are not senior royals, not publicly funded and don’t work ‘full-time’ for the RF, but they’re still HRH. The title and the ‘job’ are separate things.
I think ‘not using’ their titles is a concession to public opinion, and does not actually mean that they have been stripped of them.

The80sweregreat · 18/01/2020 18:59

I'm sure that the Queen is perfectly fine.
She can sort things out rather quickly it seems.

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 18/01/2020 19:00

While they can no longer formally represent The Queen, the Sussexes have made clear that everything they do will continue to uphold the values of Her Majesty

Oh? What values are those? Fecking off to sell yourself to the highest bidder?

NumbersStation · 18/01/2020 19:00

The Sussexes will not use = still have.

However I would posit the notion that they could be stripped of them the minute they do when Sussex is no longer cutting the mustardo.

If they want to be away then duck and spud should have been removed also.

Frogmore still their home? They are going to be as popular as a dose of crabs if they come back (which I doubt). Still it would stop demands for a flat in the castle I suppose.

It may be away back in for ole Harrychops of course but even if he does come back with his tail between his legs and his fleshy Crown Jewels in a nattily monogrammed envelope, I reckon the public are done.

Unless he goes on celeb Love Island. There are far more suitable love interests on there...

MeghanMountbattenSausage · 18/01/2020 19:00

Hello everyone.

New thread, new username Grin

SeperatedSwans · 18/01/2020 19:01

I'm more interested in the rug of public duties being pulled completely. This isn't what H and M wanted. They wanted part time representation to give them the ability to rub shoulders with influential people. They have lost this.

They will be by invite only, they can't invite themselves anymore, that have lost that power.

For a couple looking to launch a brand dependent on who they know not what they know, this is a damaging blow in the long term.

WendyMoiraAngelaDarling · 18/01/2020 19:01

If they were as unhappy as they claimed to be then this speedy resolution will be a relief to them, especially M...

DeRigueurMortis · 18/01/2020 19:01

They won’t “use” HRH is very different from they will “lose” HRH

Yes a very important distinction - one that very much hints at a way back for H if he needs it.

Also note no mention of H's place in the succession being removed.

ChicCroissant · 18/01/2020 19:01

The surprise for me in that statement was about the military duties, I think that's a part that Harry enjoys and will greatly miss tbh.

I hope they have got things tied down in case of a divorce as well, and I hate to say that. I hope this arrangement makes them happy but it's going to be difficult for Harry - no matter how much he'd like to walk away - to completely change his life like that.

TalullahDingleberry · 18/01/2020 19:01

Sussex Royal website updated today still refers to them as Their Royal Highnesses.

VivaLeBeaver · 18/01/2020 19:01

Oh I’m sure they’d rather be able to use HRH so whether it’s technically been removed or not I bet they’re not happy.

strictlymomdancing · 18/01/2020 19:01

I think they are also saying "yes the british / canadian taxpayers will pay for security but we have some law/rule that means you will never know for sure".

We do need some clarification on Sussex Royal though.

Agree with the PP re: comparisons to the Duke of Windsor. They are popular now but there's always other celebrities in the wings. They will get older, and unless (likely) they use Archie as their money maker as a handsome royal grandson, they will find themselves nobodies.

WingBingo · 18/01/2020 19:02

BBC news just confirmed that they won’t lose the title, just not use it.
