All these lovely kitties!!! How good does it get!!

CoffeeBoy · 19/12/2022 13:28

Well Fat Kitten has come into season. First time I’ve had a female cat in season, she’s not a year old yet! Is being exceptionally noisy. She’s a house cat so not concerned about unwanted pregnancy. I do have a boy cat who’s been neutered and she’s sticking her bum in his face. He’s very flummoxed .

how long does this last?

Allergictoironing · 19/12/2022 14:07

You say that about unwanted pregnancies, but a queen in season is the greatest escapologist in the world. If you don't have a porch or similar "air lock", be VERY careful when you go out.

Matter if interest, why haven't you had her spayed? It's a lot better for their health....

Further to the finger in ear comments, I TOLD you Boycat is weird and neuro diverse. Do not, any of you, try it with your own cats as @JacobMarleysCat 's prediction will come true. When I used the technique to relax him at his last vet visit, the vet was amazed. And highly amused.

Pelo22 · 19/12/2022 14:39

I'm off to try it with Ollie Grin

CoffeeBoy · 19/12/2022 14:39

@Allergictoironing she’s a pedigree and we’re undecided but are slightly considering breeding from her when she’s older.

There's a photo upthread you may have missed, but here's a sepia tinted Cedric for your delight and delectation.

Put the tree up this evening (not decorated yet).
Sybil is more interested than usual.

Cedric!!!! I love him. Little purr, so soft and so enquiring. Bless his fudgy face.

LostCats · 19/12/2022 22:01

Allergic, the vets did well out of the members of this thread today!
We were also at one for my beloved Boone.
V v glad Boycat is doing well. Loving the ear story!

Well that was a LONG day. Went down to the animal hospital in Winchester. From London. In the pouring rain. With 2 DC and my Boone.
His walking is horrendous now. He just falls. Loveliest vet neurologist (who knew that was a profession??!!) was pretty sure it was spinal cancer. There were tears.
Took the kids to Marwell Zoo to take their mind off it. Wow! Can’t recommend it highly enough. What a wonderful afternoon! Empty and so close to the animals.
got back to vet. He doesn’t have cancer!!
he has a compressed spinal cord!! In between his shoulder blades. The MRI image was incredible. Perfectly round and then suddenly flat as a pancake.
Hopefully steroids and gabapentin should help as it’s a swollen deteriorating disc.
we probably have less than a year with him left. But given I didn’t think he’d make it home today, it really is the most wonderful news.
I’m never ever begrudging my pet insurance payments ever again!

so glad Boycat and Boone are doing well ❤️

TheLongRider · 19/12/2022 22:13

LostCats - great news, not perfect but better than expected.

We bit the bullet and adopted our two foster boys, seven cats for 2023 onwards! Here is a picture of a happy Scamp in the right kind of cat tree.

YesItsMeIDontCare · 19/12/2022 22:19

Awww... butt scritches for Boone too 🥰
DH has a deteriorating disc... I bet Boone makes a lot less fuss 😂

You know you did the right thing Lost 😁

LostCats · 19/12/2022 22:28

Ah thank you both. Was a long and at times traumatic day. But I’m currently standing at the back door while he investigates in the rain. And there is nowhere in the world I’d rather be ❤️

LostCats · 19/12/2022 22:30

7 cats! Respect! But how lovely that they have a forever home!

and I am so sorry about your DH Yes, it really is an awful ailment isn’t it!

Allergictoironing · 19/12/2022 22:38

We'll just have to hold each others hands over the next few months Lost.

I knew about vet neurologists through watching Supervet. He has those, vet oncologists, vet eye specialists - just about type of problem they seem to have at least one vet who specialises in it!

Is the disc too far gone to operate to remove it and fuse the vertebrae, or do they reckon the damage to the cord itself is beyond recovery?

CoffeeBoy · 19/12/2022 22:51

Cedric is gorgeous. Here is fat kitten.

LostCats · 19/12/2022 22:52

So they did a CT as well as the MRI so they’ll know more when that’s done.
However. The operation will cost £8,000. Yup. EIGHT THOUSAND POUNDS!!!
And we used our entire instance up in one afternoon already today.
He will also be on steroids and gabapentin from tomorrow. She says that will radically reduce the swelling. And I misquote her but she said in essence that dogs are a bit more fragile in their recovery, cats are a bit magical and who knows how long he’ll last on just those pills. I thought of this exact thread when she said cats were magical (I may have heard = better 🤣🤣)

Of course, just to ensure I don’t get too giddy with happiness, he has exactly zero gratitude and is fairly sure I just messed with his nap schedule and made him have shaved bits all over because I’m a meany. So my happy night I had planned of him sleeping on my legs is not happening and he is out in the long wet grass 🙄🤣

LostCats · 19/12/2022 22:54

But yes, I think holding hands Allergic is a great idea. It’s so terrifying the thought of losing them.

LostCats · 19/12/2022 22:55

Fat kitten is GORGEOUS!!!

CoffeeBoy · 19/12/2022 23:01

@LostCats that sounds very stressful, I hope he continues to do well. Is that your insurance limit maxed out now?

LostCats · 19/12/2022 23:03

Yup. Sadly we’re totally maxed now for this year - which started this month.
But I have faith the pills will make a difference.

Allergictoironing · 19/12/2022 23:54

I was thinking of increasing my max on the insurance last year, but decided not to. But at least CKD is something that isn't the most expensive condition to treat unless you go overboard on the tests & do loads of stuff to just keep them going a bit longer e.g. vet agreed absolutely no point in doing a biopsy as it won't make any difference to treatment. So depending on just how much the appetite stimulant costs, I don't see him breaking the £4k barrier between now & end May (when the year runs out) on just regular checkups for BP & weight, and maybe the odd urine sample & testing.

Which is quite a relief as ! just had to borrow from my DSis to keep me going until I start getting paid again. Thought I was going to be OK, but a) mortgage has gone up silly amounts, along with other bills and b) insurance doesn't cover the very expensive renal food, or the extra litter he's getting through. Total XMas bill this year (all food, pressies etc) has been kept down to well under £200.

And I will NOT put my beloved boy through the stress and indignity of tube feeding, or twice weekly visits to the vet to get fluids injected under the skin, just to keep him with me a bit longer when he gets to that stage.

Supersimkin2 · 20/12/2022 00:12

Fat Kitten is exquisite.

Sending all the healing vibes to Lostcats and Allergic from here.

@CoffeeBoy
What breed is fat kitten? Looks very like Sybil when she was a kit.
