I was in by myself last night and wanted something easy to watch so I tried that new Murder in Benidorm series on C5. OMG - what a load of drivel. Makes Death in Paradise seem like a Dicken’s adaptation. Bad acting and ridiculous plot (and I do watch some crap!).
What was John Hannah thinking taking the lead role? I got about halfway through and turned it off & went to bed in disgust!

I really don't like any programmes with auctioneers/ antiques dealers etc (the OG Antiques Roadshow excepted, obviously)

They all seem so... odd

Tipping Point.

Q: Name a large cat, that has four letters, the first is L and the last is N. There are two vowels in the middle.
A: Tiger.

Even Ben can't keep a straight face with some of the questions. I wonder if it's a deliberate double-bluff, to stress contestants into thinking they must have misunderstood something, as it really can't be that easy.

My favourites are "People from which country are called Australians?" and "If somebody deacribes a meal as 'tomatoey', which red fruit are they saying that it tastes of?" !

I love this.

A classic is Ben asking “Papillon is the French word for which flying insect?”

After much blustering, the contestant came out with “Dog?”

Thought Ben was going to wet himself laughing 😝

I haven’t watched it in about 25 years!!! It was pretty dire then. The only soap I really watch now is Casualty. I even used to watch Doctors - was great to come in from work and zone out for half an hour. I was gutted when the bbc pulled it.

I agree! I used to love EastEnders and at one point I was also watching Corrie and Emmerdale. They do make it so if you stop for a while when you try and get back into it you feel a bit lost. Like a kid who's missed a bunch of school! And you wonder why you were so gripped by it previously!

Casualty when I watched it wasn't even really classed as a soap I don't think. But this was in the late 80s- early 90s. I loved it though. I think it was that then Crimewatch. On Saturday nights.

My mate had a main character role on Doctors. She was on it for years. I felt bad for her when they stopped it.

Some of the scripting and acting was pretty dire though. But it was a daily daytime soap on a low budget which is really intense hard work with little time to learn lines etc.

They still managed to be far superior to Hollyoaks!

Anything with Suranne Jones. F knows how she keeps getting cast as the lead. Appalling and is the same in every role. Even if I thought a plot might be interesting I wouldn’t watch it if she’s in it.

MrsMoastyToasty · 07/08/2026 14:52

Grand Designs.

Tarquin and Jacinta - an entrepreneur and a content creator- have a miniscule budget of £5 million and want to build a 1 bedroom "alternative" property in a hole in the ground on a flood plain using blue-tack and reclaimled cardboard boxes.
1 month into the build they sack the builders.
3 months in Jacinta's work dries up.
Phew- Jacinta gets a new job.
6 months in the cardboard roof leaks.
8 months in Jacinta is pregnant (Kevin Mccloud is always blamed in our household).
Tarquin realises they need another £2 million to finish the job. Bank of Mater and Pater oblige.
Kevin comes back and has the guided tour and says a few long words to camera.

And repeat.

She was good in Gentleman Jack and Save Me.

On the buses - reg varney the white main character was the one we were laughing at, his sexist racist stupidity. Rising damp was similar in that the black character was intelligent and likeable and Reggie Perrin was the stupid racist fool.
bit today everyone gets their knickers in a twist just because

I agree. She often has a dopey, staring into space expression that really annoys me.
That thing set on the submarine was laughable.

Oh I couldn’t watch that 😂 Just got a daft open-mouthed expression. She was fine as Karen in Corrie but I can’t work out where the idea she could do other roles came from. It’s embarrassing.

For sheer audacity, the Tom Kerridge Italian cooking programme currently in the death slot of 7pm on itv. Its a half hour advert for Mark's and Spencers food! As a proper tv show. In fact most stuff in that slot is dire, "Look at us, we're farmers", with him off Emmerdale, the opening boxes show etc.
Any alien conspiracy shite that my sil insists has some basis in truth, because "well how else do you explain it"

malloryknox123 · 07/08/2026 15:30

Ann Droid is pretty terrible

BeaLola · 07/08/2026 15:42

Death In Paradise is in a different league - we rewatched from series 1 in January this year upto present day

DH always quotes the line “they had a party for him …. After he left”

but Benidorm is Murder is just awful, I still cannot understand ad why John Hannah is involved

RaraRachael · 07/08/2026 16:51

I always find it puzzling how the same handful of actresses get the lead parts in every programme.
There must be thousands they could choose from but no, it's Sally Lindsay, Jill Halfoenny, Sheridan Smith, Jo Joyner and Suranne Jones on repeat.

Is Casualty still going?! On a Saturday night? 😂
i used to remember being a little kid and the music to that coming on, I was traumatised by the theme tune because I once watched the first 5 minutes with my mum and something terribly traumatic happened at the very beginning and I ran off!
I’ll be gobsmacked to hear it’s still going though, I don’t think I’ve heard of anyone watching it in the last 20 years at least.

DollopOfFun · 07/08/2026 18:05

Yeah the opening 5 mins of Casualty... bloke using a chainsaw to cut a branch, whilst standing on a woodwormy plank balanced on an upturned bucket. His power cable is daisy chained via two ancient extension cables. (sparking). Oh and he's right next to a pond.

Wonder what is going to happen this week?

SerendipityCat · 07/08/2026 18:15

The worst for me has to be that God-awful Keith Chegwin game show thing - Naked Jungle, was it? - with Cheggers in the nip running around with his tiny todger flopping about like a skinless chipolata. Who the hell thought that was a good idea?

I have a vauge memory of one programme (please don't let it have been a series) which followed a dedicated workforce down the sewers of Britain, unblocking them as they went.

This intrigued me so I did a bit of research and found that Sewermen made it to 3 series with 20 episodes in total. You're welcome.

Mrs Brown's Boys makes me feel genuine, misery sodden despair. Why? Why does it exist? Who likes it? Who would pay to produce such a thing? Of everything else that could exist, why did that dross get a green light? Why?

It genuinely upsets me as a concept. Just knowing it exists hurts me on a deep spiritual level.
