I was in by myself last night and wanted something easy to watch so I tried that new Murder in Benidorm series on C5. OMG - what a load of drivel. Makes Death in Paradise seem like a Dicken’s adaptation. Bad acting and ridiculous plot (and I do watch some crap!).
What was John Hannah thinking taking the lead role? I got about halfway through and turned it off & went to bed in disgust!

Where do I even start with Benidorm is Murder? The acting is truly terrible, the location is truly terrible and the plot is truly terrible. Because of this, the programme completely lacks any charming cosy crime vibes. It makes Good Ship Murder look like Line of Duty!!

My thoughts exactly. Is JH really that desperate for work he’s involved himself in something so down market?!

I tried watching the Hairdresser Mysteries last week and turned over after 15 mins. Dire! Sally Phillips seems like a lovely person in real life and she was great in Alan Partridge but I can't help question her 'acting' skills - though she presumably wasn't to blame for the script...

Again agree with this and similar thoughts as JH as is SP really that desperate for work? I got halfway through episode 3 when I realised I couldn’t cope with the constant dancing. It was starting to make me feel a bit sea sick?!

Mrs Brown's Boys is shite, yet inexplicably always up for awards.

OP, are you saying DIP is rubbish? I've just finished watching all 15 series. Some storylines are better than others (Neville's girlfriend who turned out to be a drug dealer and murderer was completely ridiculous), but I mostly enjoyed it. I love Beyond Paradise though.

Oh no, I enjoy DIP but it’s not exactly high brow!

Two from a while back daytime TV
Moving day yip watching people move house.
Another was following Wigan council workers would ednas window.catch get fixed ..Johnny has to go to the depot to see if he can get the part..join us after the break.

I have a vauge memory of one programme (please don't let it have been a series) which followed a dedicated workforce down the sewers of Britain, unblocking them as they went.

The show thats just people opening boxes

I seriously loved that show. It demonstrated Utility theory and the law of diminishing marginal utility. Just brilliant.

My DH loved Deal or No Deal when it first started. He tried to get audience tickets but it wasn’t filmed near us and we couldn’t make timings work at that time! I did fine it strangely compelling for some reason.

I can't get into DiP but for some reason, love the one set in Australia ( escape to Paradise I think?)

I only watched one episode of that. The main character was really annoying. Did they tone her down a bit? The new characters in DIP are always annoying at first, then settle down.

Hoodle · 07/08/2026 08:33

There are so many categories of shite TV. I’d carve out programmes like Naked Attraction as being crap as childish ‘shock’ TV (oh how C4 has fallen; it’s pretty much pure dross now; should be sold off).

But then there’s your more regular formats: sitcoms, crime drama, shiny floor shows, variety (just about, still) and so on.

As a present or recent example of a terrible, terrible series in a mainstream genre it has to be Mrs Brown’s Boys. That show is so bad it’s hard to understand how utterly fuckwitted someone has to be to enjoy it.

Whenever Ch 5 starts the trailers for their new drama coming soon, if it has Sally Lindsay, Jill Halfpenny or Jo Joyner in it, I don't bother with it. The ones I have seen with any of the above in the leading role, I've never lasted more than a couple of episodes.

Channel 5 is my least favourite channel to be fair though.

Me too, it’s a family joke trying to guess how shite it’s going to be. Usually if Sheridan smith is involved it’s pretty dire. The Teacher was jaw droppingly bad. Also, they’re filmed in Spain (I think) but pretend to be in the UK- hysterical!

Gengha · 07/08/2026 08:38

Can’t pay well take it away, benefits street, the scheme, and programmes in that ilk. Let’s laugh at poor and uneducated people. Grim and depressing

EmptyInTheValley · 07/08/2026 08:47

The one where Arthur Smith has sold his soul to the devil. Someone gets accosted at the tip for their old tat, some wanky 'specialist' tarts it up and then it gets flogged on at great expense. I call it I Saw You Coming, in honour of the great Harry Enfield sketches.

The obligatory lingering shot of the big TV to get the frothers frothing.

forceofhabitandnotneed · 07/08/2026 09:22

God's Gift, the late-night ITV show in the late 90s, which was basically hunky himbos being paraded around whilst a hen party-style audience whooped and jeered. I imagine both Davina and Claudia (who hosted a series each) have expunged it from their CVs.

There was also a "PG" version fronted by Chris Tarrant called Man O' Man (or similar).

I wanted to enjoy the Australian one as I usually live shows that are set there but hated the main character.
All she did was stomp around with her hands in her pockets scowling at everybody. I didn't give her a chance to improve.

BillieWiper · 07/08/2026 10:09

I'd say the worst show I've ever seen has to be Hollyoaks. When you try and watch it you feel like you're in a void. It's like the reverse of being entertaining.

I despair that it's been able to carry on for so long.

IdentifyingAsAWoollyMammoth · 07/08/2026 10:16

My rule of thumb is "if it's made for Channel 5, it will be shit". Or, as I call Channel 5, The Sally Lindsay Channel. Does she have some scandal about some high ranking C5 exec.

Almost all their dramas/comedy dramas are rubbish but they get an audience so they churn out more of the same. It's TV for the feeble minded.

Most obvious example is The Good Ship Murder. Dire premise to begin with and shockingly bad in every department. Yet it wasn't scrapped after the first series. Frankly, had I been an exec and watched the first episode I'd have not shown any more let alone make any more.

Sadly, while we do still make some good TV dramas the overall problem is we continue to dumb down. Reality TV, celebrity how do I wash my arse, quiz shows like Tipping Point where even the thickest moron can win big money.... Some of the stuff now makes crap like Triangle and Eldorado look like the work of the RSC (actually, Eldorado was pretty good by the time it got junked; it just never recovered from the dire start).

itsgettingweird · 07/08/2026 10:35

See - I like it because it’s a stupid storyline and easy to watch. I find there’s a place in my day for shows like this 🤣

Same with Death in Paradise.

When I want to actually watch something that require brain power watch documentaries.

The Wigan Council one sounds preferable to Benidorm is Murder.😁

Death in paradise is an institution! Can’t compare it to Benidorm is Murder - plus I’d quite like to go to Guadeloupe where it’s filmed, i def don’t want to go to Benidorm 😂

I haven’t watched it in about 25 years!!! It was pretty dire then. The only soap I really watch now is Casualty. I even used to watch Doctors - was great to come in from work and zone out for half an hour. I was gutted when the bbc pulled it.

The new Ricky Gervais, Alley Cats, is pretty dire. Without any of the redeeming qualities of his other stuff. V disappointing and utterly joyless!

DollopOfFun · 07/08/2026 14:00

Keeley Hawes
Vicky McClure
Suranne Jones
Sarah Lancashire

= YES

Sally Lindsay
Jill Halfpenny
Jo Joyner
Sheridan Smith
