This was the best series I've seen in ages, laughed and cried.

Diane Morgan is a genius writer and actor. The subtle way Linda flinched all the time, it was so clever how they made you think she had feelings. So much stuff going on in the background too like Renee's narcissistic portraits on the wall.

And Cotton Eye Joe, cracked me up each time 😂

Totally agree - I noticed those portraits too; masterful in their aggressive narcissism!

That's why I plan to watch it again, there will be so many things you missed the first time.

I've watched it twice now - enjoyed it even more the second time by picking up on things I missed - there's a lot that's very subtle in there. The second time I watched with my elderly mother, as I thought she might like some bits of it, though not all. I was wrong. She laughed aloud at lots and enjoyed the whole thing.

@REP22 I'm not surprised that your Mum enjoyed it. I'm in my seventies, and such a lot of it resonated with me. Her son not picking up the reflux medication was subtly cruel. Sue's (Sue! Sue!) long suffering expression was genius.

Yes, I picked up on that - his medicine failure, then criticising her food and mocking her friends at the dinner table. A sad pastiche of what goes on in so many homes around the country. Possibly not deliberate cruelty, just heedless indifference and self-absorption. My mum is in her early 80s.

I also liked that the series didn't depict the older characters as doddering fossils, but as vibrant, active people with wit, vitality and drive for life, experience and companionship and who raise an eyebrow at patronising fools trying to pigeon-hole them. It was very refreshing to see. Best wishes to you. x
