Anyone watched this?

I feel like her parents made excuses for everything she did - felt like she was used to getting everything she wanted.

I think this posters means Romany, I don't speak it so I don't know, but I saw it mentioned on Instagram.
I watched something else earlier and her and her mum were laughing on a phone call from jail because "the story has made it to England, yeah Britain, the daily mail, maybe Kim Kardashian will be in touch" and something from the mum like "it's saves me a phone call, I was gonna call them anyway"

Thank you for explaining. How would they know Romani though? Is that their heritage?

Wow. They really are beyond redemption.

They aren’t speaking Romany. It’s some kind of slang where you put an extra syllable in the middle of words.

But I have my doubts that she would have been found guilty if it had been a jury trial. I think there may have been enough doubt for a jury to be unsure of a guilty verdict and I am surprised she didn't opt for a jury trial.

I agree, but she CHOSE a bench trial, not a jury trial.

Juries are very gullible and all you need is one or two to believe the bullshit and you don't get a majority verdict, because they are just normal people off the street, many of them not particularly intelligent or well-educated. All the defender has to do is introduce 'reasonable doubt' and remind jurors if they aren't absolutely sure they must not convict and the person walks free. Judges are not generally gullible.

Fraudornot · 22/05/2026 10:09

Has it anywhere been said why she chose a bench trial? There was so much negative publicity around her prior to trial I wonder if they thought a jury would be biased against her?

I wondered why the judge gave her a minimum of fifteen years, saying she she didn't think she'd be released in fifteen years. I think she said it was likely Mackenzie would spend the rest of her life in prison. Did she see her as completely irredeemable?

This was so weird. Why give her 15 years to life and say "It's because I doubt you'll come out after 15 years". That made no sense.

I took this as the judge suggesting the woman was her own worst enemy. That with her attitude of thinking she can get away with anything, she will have a hard time dealing with prison. And it was largely her attitude to other people that led to this tragedy. If she actually does turn herself around and done 15 years and learns about how to behave appropriately, then getting parole is probably fair enough.

Maybe that is why they had no belts on, because they tried to grab her wheel.

They had no belts on because they are teenagers and that’s what some teenagers do. A passenger can easily grab the wheel without taking off a seatbelt.

Yes, Mackenzie herself never wore a seatbelt. Except that time she drove at 100 mph into a wall.

I think she is so smug, full of herself and arrogant that she didn't for one second think a judge would find her guilty. Her face and that of her mum's when the verdict was read out said it all for me!

Fraudornot · 22/05/2026 16:09

I wonder what kind of life she could have if released in 15 years - it’s such a memorable crime

From the back seat?

Not from the back. And you don’t actually know if they had them on or not. Probably not though.

Fraudornot · 22/05/2026 19:11

I think forensics worked out that the boys didnt have seat belts on but she did

Wow the mum fucked up with her statement.

I thought that, what an idiot 🙄

simpsonthecat · 22/05/2026 20:19

I am not sure if the impact statements happens before the ruling, or after. But the Mum said all the wrong things.
If it was before, she did not help her daughter!

I would imagine it would be before to allow for any mitigating factors.

It was before sentencing but after the verdict of murder I think

74usernames · 22/05/2026 20:37

It shouldn’t matter, but the way she looked (and acted) in the last scene from prison did not make her look any better.

She was just saying what she’d been told to say, nothing else.

InWithPeaceOutWithStress · 20/05/2026 23:45

How did they translate it if it was pure gibberish?

These made-up languages are very easily decoded. As PPs have said, you simply insert a few phonemes in between syllables. Pig Latin, Bogwash, there are several such “languages” and it’s a measure of her stupidity that she thought she would not be understood. Listen to it a couple of times (maybe slowing the recording down) and most people could work it out.

efeslight · 23/05/2026 12:49

Just watched it on Netflix but never heard of it before this. She was clearly a bully and her parents excused and minimised all her terrible behaviour. The incident on the motorway a few weeks before the crash, and reading on this thread that she wasn't wearing a seat belt in all her social media videos make me believe she was guilty. I cannot imagine being so angry and out of control that I would drive at that speed into a wall.

Fraudornot · 23/05/2026 13:07

One possible way it could have been an accident I thought of. That road she sped along looked like it could have been a commonly used road for teenagers speeding their cars. It was straight and looked like on an industrial estate. Could she, through lack of sleep and intoxication, have misjudged where the T junction was and think she could keep going fast in a straight line? Im not saying that did happen but that was my first thought on seeing the video footage

GustavaKlimt · 23/05/2026 18:25

On the Channel 4 documentary it says that her lawyers advised her to have a bench trial. They felt that she was not very likeable and a jury would be swayed by that. They hoped a judge would see past her personality.

anxietyispartofme · 24/05/2026 19:40

Just watched this and like others on this thread I’m gobsmacked about her parents.

gatorlizzie · 26/05/2026 07:19

Such a nasty person - such cool parents letting her smoke weed too. Dad and Mum not very bright.
