What are your thoughts on Amandaland?
I really tried to like it. I really did.
but for me it just isn’t as good as motherland. I just don’t think the characters are distinctive enough to really stand out and identify with like in motherland. But I gave see on a few thread and fab groups that people like Amandaland and it’s just as good.

Ah yes Garry. I was a bit surprised he was working in Soha rather than Chiswick though.

When did Garry the builder appear in Amandaland? I totally missed that!

I love both. My son is a teenager so it's nice to go with the age of the kids. I think it's a sweet programme. Mal is lovely too. Don't think single men like him exist in real life though 🙂

I'm not keen on mal's ex wife. She's not very nice I don't think.

I bloody love Anne, she is the best character, always underestimated by Amanda. She thought she used to work at Greggs when she really worked as head of media at Glaxo Smithkline. I love her happy Mammy too.

She is fantastic, I agree. I love her. I got a bit confused by the careers evening episode though. She's not a teacher now is she?

One or two of the episodes. Julia was drooling over him.

Love Anne and her mammy especially since mammy arrived in Motherland.

She tried to teach maths in the first series to her son and other teens.

I loved her naivety at following through on ‘honest speaking’ -!! Even my husband really likes Amandaland and motherland -

Julia’s ‘ Dh’ was useless, but both of them were relying too much on her mum as well. I suppose she bridged the gap that he didn’t fill.

Did we ever actually see him ?

Oh in Motherland..yeah remember that bit. I thought someone was saying he'd popped up on Amandaland in SoHa.

I prefer Amandaland.

I’ve met a few Julia’s , but maybe not as badly organized. A lot of her problems were because her mum didn’t want to do it all for her and wanted her life back. She didn’t have a clue what to do then.

Her problems were largely because her husband was a waste of space.

Yep - and not an uncommon situation either
as I posted below, did we ever actually see him - ?

It didn't go well though 🫣😂

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 07/05/2026 13:43

Couldn’t they have a one off episode like a huge park party where Amandaland and Motherland characters meet and congregate?

We did see Paul but in small snatches usually at a stag boat party or go karting aka not looking after his kids.

the80sweregreat · 07/05/2026 13:49

We saw Paul ( Julia’s husband ) occasionally. His parents were hysterical as they caused more problems than they solved.

I obviously missed episodes he was in

Motherland was set in Chiswick. Amandaland was filmed in various places such as Highbury Islington and the kitchen shop is in east London. There is no SoHa but there is Harlesden which is very multicultural (which I thought as I know Willesden), nearby and has been aspirational for years.

Motherland was actually set (and filmed) in Acton.

the80sweregreat · 07/05/2026 13:54

We saw Paul in a store in a queue ringing Julia up to find out what to buy ( Christmas time)
He was on a boat on a stag moaning that he had mint in his Pimm’s ( whilst she was having a mini breakdown over childcare issues and so on)
I think he was in another episode too , but it was blink and you’ll miss it with him with Paul.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 07/05/2026 14:04

I did love the (slightly controversial) Motherland Christmas special though. Made me laugh like a drain.

I'm not getting the episode in the new series when she appears to be employed at the school as a teacher...or is she just helping out..?

I didn't remember her being a teacher before. I thought she was just helping the kids with homework (badly) because she had a degree in science or something. I don't remember.

Like pp said ...she had a previous high flying job for glaxo Smith Klein or something.

She's just helping out! It's a bit of a plot device, in real life parents probably wouldn't be so involved in their kid's secondary school (particularly when, in Anne's case, she has other younger kids), but obviously they don't want to keep introducing teachers and other minor characters into the show, so it's easier to have established characters like Anne practically running the Careers Week

SoNo is South Norwood which is near me. Soha is South Harlesden. I only know Willesden.

I live in SoNo! Definitely not filmed here or half the characters would be junkies 🤪

🤣 SoNo is getting trendier and apparently you have a new cafe near Brown and Green opening at 5.30am!

His parents were a bloody needy nightmare. In-laws from hell. You can see Paul took after them in character.

I liked S 1, but S2 is not as good.
Love Amanda, her mum and Anne, but bored by Mal, JJ, Fi and Della. Too many scenes watching football and too much of the dull kids.

Did love Amanda vs Vantablack!
