What are your thoughts on Amandaland?
I really tried to like it. I really did.
but for me it just isn’t as good as motherland. I just don’t think the characters are distinctive enough to really stand out and identify with like in motherland. But I gave see on a few thread and fab groups that people like Amandaland and it’s just as good.

Oh I do like it ! I like the characters they have in this.
Anne is a good crossover from Morherland.

JacknDiane · 07/05/2026 11:00

Where does Amanda live, I dont understand the SoNo bit?

the80sweregreat · 07/05/2026 11:06

Amanda had to move , she is currently in South Harlesden , hence ‘ SoHa ‘. I don’t know that part of London at all, but I suspect it’s to make it sound more upmarket maybe, but no idea. Looks ok to me , but her mum lives in Chelsea and clearly thinks she is slumming it coming over to visit her!

SoNo is South Norwood which is near me. Soha is South Harlesden. I only know Willesden.

the80sweregreat · 07/05/2026 11:42

Oh, is it So No ? I thought it was So Ha !! Ha ha
i don’t know these areas of London at all.

Where Amanda is is SoHa.

the80sweregreat · 07/05/2026 12:00

Sorry for my confusing posts.
Amanda lives in So Ha then.
Where was Motherland set? She had a lovely house there !

Iriseee · 07/05/2026 12:05

I've only been to Harlesden once but I found it to be the most depressing and downbeat part of London I've encountered, and that's after 15 years in the capital. So I guess SoHa is an attempt to distance from that reputation by playing into the "nicer" bit.

Kadiofakit · 07/05/2026 12:05

I came into all this the wrong way around. Started with Amandaland and watched motherland on the back of that. Loved them both and am very excited about the new series

Motherland was set in Chiswick. Amandaland was filmed in various places such as Highbury Islington and the kitchen shop is in east London. There is no SoHa but there is Harlesden which is very multicultural (which I thought as I know Willesden), nearby and has been aspirational for years.

Jane143 · 07/05/2026 12:07

Not as good as Motherland but still very good

I’ve never been to Harlesden to the best of my knowledge but it’s hardly on my list of London areas to visit. Yeah I’m a snob!

This is a great series. The right balance of cringe, smile and a few laugh out loud moments.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 07/05/2026 12:12

I found a thread on Harlesden here. Saying Willesden was horrible. I always thought Willesden was quite trendy. Someone said it was near Wembley. My dad used to live near there (Kenton) and we only went to Wembley for concerts and a big outdoor market. They also mentioned a temple in Neaaden which I’m sure we drove by.

I've binged it and enjoyed it, I'm in a minority of finding Motherland totally unrelatable. I don't know anyone like any of the characters and found most of them really annoying

Ive always like Joanna Lumley being old enough for the New Avengers so seeing more of her is a plus for me

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 07/05/2026 12:15

Motherland was filmed in Ealing, South Acton and a bit of Chiswick. I’d never thought South Acton had houses like Julia’s despite working in Brook Green (Hammersmith) which is sort of nearby.

Apparently they’re exaggerated characters on motherland but based on real life people. Someone on Reddit says why doesn’t Julia use after school club and childminders and also speculates that half of them are on coke from their experience.

No wonder I can't relate, my experience as a primary school mum certainly didn't involve anyone who didn't have a proper childcare set up or anyone taking cocaine as far as I'm aware 😂

I live in a place that couldnt be less London though

the80sweregreat · 07/05/2026 12:36

I’ve met a few Julia’s , but maybe not as badly organized. A lot of her problems were because her mum didn’t want to do it all for her and wanted her life back. She didn’t have a clue what to do then.

I loved the scene in the bank , laughed my head off that she said she needed a bigger house for her business as needed to look like she was doing well - it totally mirrored the long running mumsnet thread about certain people in the MLM scene

DeftGoldHedgehog · 07/05/2026 13:16

I prefer Amandaland.

Her problems were largely because her husband was a waste of space.

I was going to say, not London then...

the80sweregreat · 07/05/2026 13:21

Julia’s ‘ Dh’ was useless, but both of them were relying too much on her mum as well. I suppose she bridged the gap that he didn’t fill.

Thecows · 07/05/2026 13:24

I miss Motherland people too but do quite like Amandaland

SinisterBumFacedCat · 07/05/2026 13:29

I bloody love Anne, she is the best character, always underestimated by Amanda. She thought she used to work at Greggs when she really worked as head of media at Glaxo Smithkline. I love her happy Mammy too.
