What are your thoughts on Amandaland?
I really tried to like it. I really did.
but for me it just isn’t as good as motherland. I just don’t think the characters are distinctive enough to really stand out and identify with like in motherland. But I gave see on a few thread and fab groups that people like Amandaland and it’s just as good.

In the pilot Liz’s son Charlie was best friends with Anne’s son Darius. Don’t think there was any mention of Charlie and Manus being friends in the pilot - Manus would have been about 9 if he was in Ivy’s class (as Julia states that Ivy is 9) and I think Charlie was meant to be younger than that. Obviously none of this ties up with Darius now being the same age as Georgie who is older than Manus!

Later on in the series the children all seemed to change ages to suit the plot. It wasn’t very consistent.

but remember how Amanda kept cleaning mannus after he went near charlie 😂

I want to see Liz’s children with all A* in the exams, and to be the most confident and capable children.

Kevin’s kids - the most loving and gentle kids

Julia’s - the most relaxed unflappable kids

Please - scriptwriters - I know you are reading this - make me happy 🤣.

I enjoyed it, actually liked it better than Motherland in some ways. Julia really irritated me and I didn't warm to Liz either. If they could just bring Kevin into Amandaland then it'd be perfect!
I thought the Christmas special was poor though.

I think that’s what I miss. The warm, relatable characters like kevin. Amanda comes acrtas quite pathetic.

Is it really what happens in secondary? Loads of hanging around the pitch?

I played for a local football team in my teens and some of the players' parents absolutely did come along to every match, volunteer to do the oranges at half time, organise trophies at the end of the season etc. It was definitely a bit of a social activity for them as well as for us!

Yeah that’s the point I’m making - they weren’t the same age in the pilot but later they were.

Kevin’s kids when he told them tearfully that he couldn’t make sports day, they just moved their heads to watch tv and carried on eating toast, no emotions! 🤣

Also Manus was an irritating child. Telling tales on Julia in Amanda’s shop. Getting left behind at Halloween party then they think he’s lost. He’s turned into a lovely teen now!

Motherland best bit for me (am sure I’ve mentioned it here) was in the pilot when Liz cuts frozen cheese, cuts through her hand, blood everywhere but she’s absolutely fine, and Julia screaming and almost fainting. Then Kevin mopping up the blood later. So funny.

RobinEllacotStrike · 15/05/2026 20:22

Im really enjoying it.
I also loved motherland. I resist comparing them - quite different shows.

I love Anne’s bigger role.

I agree it was much funnier.

Do we know why anne moved
to SoHa btw? She was a sahm and sounds like she started work again and kids are now teens so why leave the fancy area from before?

the80sweregreat · 15/05/2026 20:24

I don’t know why Anne moved. She had a nice place and they didn’t seem hard up or having to downsize.

I agree that is a mystery. Maybe with 4 kids she needed a bigger house.

But she moved to a smaller one.

the80sweregreat · 15/05/2026 20:48

It was just plot purposes really washt it. They wanted Anne and not the others to be living near Amanda.
They are a funny double act , so can forgive! ( although she wouidnt be moving in real life)

ChessieFL · 15/05/2026 21:00

Maybe Anne moved to try and get away from Amanda!

I'm rewashing motherland. Amanda definitely comes across as more harsh and bitchy in series 1.

In Amandaland she's become more of a insecure buffoon who is shallow and desperate for attention and unaware of what everyone thinks.
It's definitely a softer view of her.

More Michael Scott than David Brent if anyone gets the reference?

She had very hard knocks - husband moved on quickly with another woman and had a baby. She lost everything she valued in the divorce, all the things that, in her mind, gave her status. The script writers went hard on her!

I think they are playing it out well though. The bursts of self awareness, and even pathos sometimes, is good.

I am thinking about the scene where her daughter is playing with face products rather than studying.

MarmaladeorJam · 15/05/2026 21:41

I am really enjoying Anne, the whole Irish thing, and bloody DARIUS.

Didn't Anne say the school was noted for some thing or other?

I howled when Anne was trying to teach the teens maths. The beautiful equation. I must say. I thought the teens did terrific acting in the maths episodes!

The Darius actor story is sweet. He was homeless and then got this job and turned his life around. Good for him eh?

Contour badger! 🤣. I love the scene where Felicity tells Manus “darling I’ll teach you how to mix a Daiquiri!”.

Did she? It looks smaller but maybe it’s like the Tardis? Or maybe the family had finance issues and had to sell the old big house and downsize. After having twins and baby Niamh.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 15/05/2026 21:51

I want Anne’s Irish mammy to come back. Love her!

I thought it was better than motherland. The main character on motherland was just so unlikeable

God wasn’t she!

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 15/05/2026 21:55

Anne’s mammy the actress Maggie mccarthy was born in Wandsworth! She does an Irish accent well.

My DD played football for a local team until she was 18 and me and DH went to nearly every match .. great group of parents all watching together. Even when the girls could drive 🤣

I miss it.
