What are your thoughts on Amandaland?
I really tried to like it. I really did.
but for me it just isn’t as good as motherland. I just don’t think the characters are distinctive enough to really stand out and identify with like in motherland. But I gave see on a few thread and fab groups that people like Amandaland and it’s just as good.

Anne has a PhD in Chemistry from Imperial. There was a scene where Amanda says something like “that’s not a real degree Anne”.

Darius jumping out of the moving car had me laughing out loud at the TV for the first time in about 20 years.

Oh yes. This was pure joy. Ive not stopped laughing at this in my head.
Fabulous telly

I think the issue with Amanda land is none of the peripheral characters are funny. The only funny people are Amanda, her mum and Anne, who were all in motherland. How or why have they made a whole new cast of completely unfunny characters. All the characters in motherland were funny and interesting in their own right

Completely agree.
I will still watch Amandaland though for the 3 characters mentioned.
Lucy Punch as Amanda is genius

And wasn’t she Head of something at a massive company?
Ann stood up to Amanda at the end of Motherland but seems to have reverted to her mouse personality again.

Glaxo Smith Kline.

Yes! I went to write it but wasn’t 100% on the spelling.

Tbf in motherland Kevin’s wife Jill was basically the female equivalent of Julia’s husband

But I thought Kevin was a SAHP where as Julia was trying to juggle a full time career and do 100% childcare, housework etc. I tried to watch Motherland again last night but AMM grates on me. Also why does she brazen every mistake out with ensuing disasters instead of saying oops! I got that wrong and then relax? Very frustrating to watch!

the80sweregreat · 12/05/2026 11:54

Julia was a female Basil Fawlty who didn’t know when to stop digging a hole. I did feel for her with the in laws though and the swimming party was the funniest thing I’ve seen in a long time. It did sum up that claustrophobic feeling of public baths and just how horrible they can be. She played it well I thought , even if her character was annoying.

RipplePlease · 12/05/2026 12:09

@columnatedruinsdomino
I don’t think the word “relax” was in Julia’s vocabulary!

I love Lucy Punch. She plays Amanda so well.

Also funny was when Abs mentioned Handmaids Tale and Amanda said she loved anything hand made.

I’m binging the new series and loving it.

Just noticed Sharon Horgan is involved … she co wrote the first two motherlands but not the third and you could see the difference.

MarmaladeorJam · 13/05/2026 19:35

I really enjoy it.

Darius jumping out of the car door...
Anne fainting when told she is pregnant. They had me there as I thought it was a perimenopause story line.

I really need something to happen between Amanda and the ever so gorgeous Mal. Too much of nothing at all there...

Love Lumley being the transgressive grandmother (my mum was somewhat like that much to the children's delight).

Bunionbabe · 13/05/2026 22:39

Has Anne got slimmer on the face since series 1? She is really pretty.

I thought she’s lost weight definitely.

StudyinBlue · 13/05/2026 23:23

I think one of the funniest lines in Motherland came from Paul when Julia was on the phone begging him to come and help. He just said, just remember if you ever drop one those plates you’re spinning I’ll always be right behind you to pick it up and toss it right back’. This was meant to be a supportive comment.

Just finished, I didn't dare look on here before for fear of spoilers.

Loved seeing Garry the builder, great throwback to Motherland.

Poor Anne up the duff again. I thought it was great when Darius was asking for a favour whilst she was simultaneously ironing and making a lasagna. I am also guilty of babying my strapping 6ft 4 son, I do find that very relatable.

I wonder if we never see Anne's family apart from Darius because this is Amandaland and Amanda only perceives the aspects of Anne's life that interact with hers.

I disagree with PP that JJ is an unnecessary character, I find him very funny and the relationship he and Mal and Ned all have together is really heartwarming.

Finally , I have met Mal ( Sam Anderson) in real life a couple of times on the Sci Fi circuit, back in his Doctor Who days and found him to be an absolute sweetheart. If you look at his background he is a lovely down to earth man who chooses work that helps him to be there for family members. I think he's simply fab.

A) thank god I deleted my comment before posting it an hour or two ago, I had a sudden sense of ‘but what if someone reads it who hasn’t finished watching?’ 🤯😂

b) Mal was in Dr Who? Do you know which series/episode?

Lurleene · 14/05/2026 00:23

@NoCommentingFromNowOn he was in lots of episodes in Series 8, he played Danny Pink in the Peter Capaldi era, a recurring character.

Oh and Series 8 just happens to be on the iPlayer!!! Happy days for me!

Thank you!

I’m not a massive Dr Who fan to be honest because it’s too scary but I’ll make an exception for the lovely Mal.

Ann stood up to Amanda at the end of Motherland but seems to have reverted to her mouse personality again.

She was head of global product development at GlaxoSmithKline. This came out in Motherland when Amanda said she thought she’d worked in Greggs.
