What are your thoughts on Amandaland?
I really tried to like it. I really did.
but for me it just isn’t as good as motherland. I just don’t think the characters are distinctive enough to really stand out and identify with like in motherland. But I gave see on a few thread and fab groups that people like Amandaland and it’s just as good.

I am rewatching Motherland. The episode where Paul's useless parents visit is just brilliant.

I miss Liz and Julia in Amandaland.

Just finished, I didn't dare look on here before for fear of spoilers.

Loved seeing Garry the builder, great throwback to Motherland.

Poor Anne up the duff again. I thought it was great when Darius was asking for a favour whilst she was simultaneously ironing and making a lasagna. I am also guilty of babying my strapping 6ft 4 son, I do find that very relatable.

I wonder if we never see Anne's family apart from Darius because this is Amandaland and Amanda only perceives the aspects of Anne's life that interact with hers.

I disagree with PP that JJ is an unnecessary character, I find him very funny and the relationship he and Mal and Ned all have together is really heartwarming.

Finally , I have met Mal ( Sam Anderson) in real life a couple of times on the Sci Fi circuit, back in his Doctor Who days and found him to be an absolute sweetheart. If you look at his background he is a lovely down to earth man who chooses work that helps him to be there for family members. I think he's simply fab.

Anne’s family are all in Ireland. We did see her mammy a couple of times in Motherland, family through window of her house dancing at Xmas and in Amandaland on teams call when she introduced them to Georgie. They could easily get a few Irish actors over though. Pity uncle Colm actor in Derry Girls has retired as he’d be perfect.

I really enjoy it.

Darius jumping out of the car door...
Anne fainting when told she is pregnant. They had me there as I thought it was a perimenopause story line.

I really need something to happen between Amanda and the ever so gorgeous Mal. Too much of nothing at all there...

Love Lumley being the transgressive grandmother (my mum was somewhat like that much to the children's delight).

Anne is very fertile. She was pregnant with twins and Niamh in Motherland. And I swear in Motherland she said she was going through an early menopause.

I love them all! JJ is great. I miss Johannes. The bite by the snake 🤣

Joanna Lumley is great. And I also love Manus. Great little child actor with some brilliant lines. All the teen actors are great actually.

I agree about the teens. They're all great.

Like I said though I love Manus. He’s a real talent

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 14/05/2026 12:09

Manus (Alexander Shaw) is a descendant of George Bernard Shaw!

JaneFondue · 14/05/2026 12:22

I don't enjoy the teens at all. I would only like to see adults, and less helicopter parenting. More Julia type indifference for me please.

The prom episode was weak. Honestly it's also not very believable that Felicity spends so much time on the football field, or indeed that any of them do! Staring at their great galumphing teens all day.

tinyprophet · 14/05/2026 12:24

I've really enjoyed this series and Amanda's softening, and her relationship with her mother improving. It's heartwarming tv, really. Great actors and brilliant attention to detail.

JaneFondue · 14/05/2026 12:53

I was very glad when Felicity did what she did in the last episode! It was getting too heartwarming.

DamnBuster · 14/05/2026 13:05

I really wanted to like it but i just dont find it funny, amusing or interesting.

I find the performances either plain silly or flat. Nothing ever seems to happen and 'Amanda' isnt funny. I think in motherland, it was the group dynamic that was funny.

I am glad for Amanda (being careful here as I’m not sure if everyone has finished watching) but I was looking forward to some….spikeyness? If that makes sense? But I’m beyond excited for series 3!

Could we have a brief cameo from some of the Motherland mums and dads? Would that work? Or something re Amanda’s ex Johnny and his wife/girlfriend that sends Amanda spiralling? In the Christmas episode of Motherland didn’t he introduce someone to them all and she was completely lovely and normal, very un-Amanda like? I’ll have to watch it again.

Umm why are you glad for Amanda? There was spikiness! Did you miss it? ( also trying not to spoil).

That would be perfect re Johnny and Tamara, but their child (children?) would be a young child though. Not sure how that could work? The story.

They had a baby? I completely forgot that!

I’ve just caught up with this program and loved it! I think it’s really funny, well written and great cast.

I had written it off and wasn’t going to watch it assuming it would be rubbish but since it won BAFTAs I got curious!

I loved season 2. I loved Motherland too, but it was darker whereas Amandaland is softer and more heartwarming, which I'm enjoying. But it's maybe not as laugh out loud as often as Motherland was. The more cynical 'bite' gave more opportunity for comedy maybe?

I like the JJ, Mal and Ned relationship. I like the Fi and Della relationship, and found Fi calling Della in Hawaii o ask where her charger was funny and relatable.

I think it does a good job of making Amanda both excruciatingly shallow, awkward and cringle, whilst also making her human and likeable. That's not easy to pull off.

I liked the prom episode with the make up lady Claire from Birmingham and them all getting drag style make up.

I also like Joanna Lumley and how her character, like Amanda, is simultaneously awful and loveable. It was sweet how they conveyed she was lonely and coming to spend time sitting in Mal's shed. I laughed when ned said it was infested with old ladies.

I think they should definitely get Anne's Mammy back, as the contrast with Amanda and felicity was very poignant.

I can't remember when I last watched a BBC sitcom and enjoyed it. It's been a very long time!

My Irish stepdad knows characters similar to him back home (Ireland).
