What are your thoughts on Amandaland?
I really tried to like it. I really did.
but for me it just isn’t as good as motherland. I just don’t think the characters are distinctive enough to really stand out and identify with like in motherland. But I gave see on a few thread and fab groups that people like Amandaland and it’s just as good.

I loved season 2. I loved Motherland too, but it was darker whereas Amandaland is softer and more heartwarming, which I'm enjoying. But it's maybe not as laugh out loud as often as Motherland was. The more cynical 'bite' gave more opportunity for comedy maybe?

I like the JJ, Mal and Ned relationship. I like the Fi and Della relationship, and found Fi calling Della in Hawaii o ask where her charger was funny and relatable.

I think it does a good job of making Amanda both excruciatingly shallow, awkward and cringle, whilst also making her human and likeable. That's not easy to pull off.

I liked the prom episode with the make up lady Claire from Birmingham and them all getting drag style make up.

I also like Joanna Lumley and how her character, like Amanda, is simultaneously awful and loveable. It was sweet how they conveyed she was lonely and coming to spend time sitting in Mal's shed. I laughed when ned said it was infested with old ladies.

I think they should definitely get Anne's Mammy back, as the contrast with Amanda and felicity was very poignant.

I can't remember when I last watched a BBC sitcom and enjoyed it. It's been a very long time!

I love Amanda! She’s definitely a type and in Motherland she was envied and disliked whereas in Amandaland she’s definitely become more likeable and human.

I don't enjoy the teens at all. I would only like to see adults, and less helicopter parenting. More Julia type indifference for me please.

The prom episode was weak. Honestly it's also not very believable that Felicity spends so much time on the football field, or indeed that any of them do! Staring at their great galumphing teens all day.

I think that Julia would be totally different with teens - trying to cling onto them more or be seen as cool mum with older kids. Also stressing about how they're doing in their exams etc. I think it was right to leave them behind and move onto Amandaland. Amanda really tries hard as a parent to teenagers.

So funny in first episode where she goes to the party but tries to make friends with the mums.

I actually find amandaland a bit more depressing!

Amanda is portrayed as so narcissistic and lacking in self awareness that I find it hard to believe she would bring up a well adjusted teen. I agree all the mothers watching teenage boys play football is unbelievable. Many teenagers don’t like being watched at that age. I used to go for a coffee whilst my son played as he said he was more relaxed with no family members watching.

It’s a sitcom, not a documentary

🙄

Garry the builder makes a cameo 😂

DappledThings · 15/05/2026 09:19

My favourite line of the series was Amanda saying about her mum, "ignore her, she buys her HRT on the dark web"

the80sweregreat · 15/05/2026 09:42

Amanda’s mum makes me laugh. When she said a lot of her friends were not around anymore ‘ they all moved to the Caymen Islands when labour got in’ ! Made me chuckle.

PinkForgetMeNot · 15/05/2026 11:04

I see they are going to do a third series. The kids will be in the sixth form next, so maybe visiting unis. Amanda will boast that her dd will go to a prestigious uni, but maybe she'll want to train as a plumber instead.

Julia’s daughter is in the same class as Amanda’s in the pilot…can we shoehorn a Julia cameo in somewhere at a 6th form event?

Yes, they all had kids in the same year, didn’t they?
They were all at the Year 6 nativity together on one of the Christmas specials.

ChessieFL · 15/05/2026 14:10

Ivy was in the same class as Manus in the pilot, so still only year 9 or 10. Although I don’t think they really paid too much attention to the kids’ ages/chronology throughout the series as later it seemed like they were all looking into secondaries at the same time and I was never quite sure how old Liz’s kids were meant to be as that seemed to change on a regular basis!

That was primary school

pouletvous · 15/05/2026 14:12

Motherland was Primary. It ended when they were Y6 and looking at secondary schools

But presumably the kids stay in the same year group, regardless of what school they go to? They’ll all be uni age at the same time.

Oh was it Manus? Ohh.

StrawberryWasp · 15/05/2026 14:20

I'm rewashing motherland. Amanda definitely comes across as more harsh and bitchy in series 1.

In Amandaland she's become more of a insecure buffoon who is shallow and desperate for attention and unaware of what everyone thinks.
It's definitely a softer view of her.

More Michael Scott than David Brent if anyone gets the reference?

StrawberryWasp · 15/05/2026 14:25

In series 1 Motherland Anne is more of a social climber desperate to be in the in crowd. Very submissive but not very likeable. Recognisable as a Queen Bee hench man type.

Whereas in Amandaland she's much softer. Genuinely a kind, soft person rather than trying hard to be liked.

the80sweregreat · 15/05/2026 14:33

Amanda always underestimated Anne. She was running the school run bus long before anyone else thought to do it and previously had a very good job. She did well with the plants too , but unfortunately Amanda put a stop to that popularity :(

Weren’t mannus and Liz’s so friends?

Newsenmum · 15/05/2026 18:42

Is it really what happens in secondary? Loads of hanging around the pitch?

ChessieFL · 15/05/2026 19:04

Newsenmum · 15/05/2026 18:38

In the pilot Liz’s son Charlie was best friends with Anne’s son Darius. Don’t think there was any mention of Charlie and Manus being friends in the pilot - Manus would have been about 9 if he was in Ivy’s class (as Julia states that Ivy is 9) and I think Charlie was meant to be younger than that. Obviously none of this ties up with Darius now being the same age as Georgie who is older than Manus!

Later on in the series the children all seemed to change ages to suit the plot. It wasn’t very consistent.

I don't find it in unbelievable at all, when my teens played football a group of mums ran a refreshment table to raise funds for the team and pretty much all the parents watched and chatted on the sidelines. I suppose different clubs have different cultures
