Just finished watching it. Really good.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 11/02/2026 22:13

Watched this tonight with dd, we love Detectorists and have watched it a few times.

This definitely has a similiar feel, I like that he takes very ordinary people (who work in DIY shops for example) and shows how extraordinary they are.

MC is a good human I think.

I've just read a theory that McKenzie Crook's character is an escaped / evolved homunculi and that's why he's acts the way he does ;)

Also I really liked Bev and hope she is more involved in the plot next series. Clive was awful.

I love this theory!

I don't usually binge, but I couldn't stop myself. Really, really loved it.

FranticFrankie · 12/02/2026 01:23

It's a bit strange, but might stick with cos I have loved Michael Palin for years 😍

notatinydancer · 12/02/2026 01:31

I’ve binged it. I loved it. Unusual , funny characters.

LyndaSnellsSniff · 12/02/2026 06:35

Detectorists is one of those television programmes that make the world a better place simply because it exists.

I very much enjoyed episode one of Small Prophets. Pierce Quigley is excellent! For all Pierce fans, have you ever listened to Plum House? It's a radio 4 comedy and well worth a listen. Available on Spotify.

Someone upthread asked about the music. I was sure it was The Unthanks, a Northumbrian folk band who wrote original music for Worzel Gummidge and Detectorists. But apparently it’s a different folk artist called Cinder Well. Similar melancholic folky sound though.

RampantIvy · 12/02/2026 07:00

We loved the music. It is very atmospheric.

StabbyCat · 12/02/2026 13:02

Just binged it.

LOVED it.

Can’t wait for series 2.

Thanks !! it was me that asked

Thought Johnny Flynn did the Detectorists music

I love the idea tha MC is a humuncleus.

Did any of them have something resembling his ponytail! He seems to need to touch it for some reason.

And surely Clea’s name being a sort of part of the word humuncleus is a clue to something?

Edited

Johnny Flynn did the title song ( which I love) and the Unthanks did all the songs about magpies.

IsItWickedNotToCare · 12/02/2026 14:13

Absolutely brilliant

Ok thanks but I’ll beg to differ ( 😆let’s not fall out over it )
they did the magpie song/ music ( gorgeous I have to say ) only

All the rest ie theme and others are Flynns

I wasn’t aware until your post that the Magpie song was someone else’s so that’s a new musician I look forward to listening to 🙏

I do find it funny that after Alice Robert’s appeared in the Detectorists Digging for Britain used Flynns music too 😁

SheepInTheTrough · 12/02/2026 14:42

Johnny Flynn actually performed his own song at the Two Brewers pub open mic night in Detectorists.

I've now watched 4 episodes of Small Prophets and am going to treat myself to the last two this evening. It's wonderful.

Detectorists is my favourite TV of all time but this has the same magic.

BreakfastOfWaffles · 12/02/2026 14:42

I really enjoyed the first episode, it's very calming. I loved the niche - ness of an underwater welder!

TheBestThingthatAlmostHappened · 12/02/2026 15:04

I loved it. Slightly silly and bonkers, bittersweet in parts and full of heart without being schmaltzy.

Detectorists is a work of genius. (A moment when one character says good morning to another is … just one of the greatest pieces of TV I’ve ever seen.)

I’d say Small Prophets is not quite that level. It’s maybe equal to ‘Mum’, or … maybe just below that. Yes, below. Mum was relentless cruelty and sadness; utterly brilliant! Not sure what else to compare it to …

Gloriia · 12/02/2026 16:19

Oh so sorry about the spoiler I thought 2 episodes had been on!

I have to disagree as we really don’t like Detectorists but love this .

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 12/02/2026 16:34

I don’t understand people who don’t like Detectorists, it’s a bit like saying you don’t like chocolate or puppies or something 🙈😂

Ive never heard the name Clea before, I was confused for a bit thinking the name was Claire and then Cleo.

tinyspiny · 12/02/2026 16:36

@Girliefriendlikespuppies why ? I love watching cricket but I don’t find it strange that other people don’t love cricket or even like cricket even though it is the best sport in the world . FWIW I’m not keen on chocolate but do love puppies .

the80sweregreat · 12/02/2026 17:36

Clea is an unusual name isn’t it.
I’ve never heard of it before now.
