Watched the first two and my DH and i loved it. My son loved the detectorists and this is right up his street. It was very funny-

the80sweregreat · 10/02/2026 14:34

MC is amazing isn’t he. He can make anything unusual appear to be usual ( scarecrows, metal detectors, alchemy !) Certainly makes a change from cop dramas.

BlueEyedBogWitch · 10/02/2026 18:48

I’m sick with flu and have just binged the entire series in one afternoon.

Michael Palin was a heartbreaking delight.
The relationship between Kacey and Michael was wonderful.
The dialogue was pitch perfect.

I adored it. There’s something about the way Mackenzie Crook’s mind works that tells me that he’s a good man who knows what’s important in life. The tiny little life lessons he builds into his work, without ever lecturing or hectoring.

Care for the natural world. Be kind to teenagers. Respect the elderly. Don’t worship money. Dream.

Mackenzie for PM!

Mackenzie Crook is a decent man. You can tell via his writing.
His character in this is a jobsworth, but not a monster ( haven’t seen them all though )

BlueEyedBogWitch · 10/02/2026 18:52

Something about his writing manages to let people have their quirks and foibles, but have their reasons. You get the impression that the jobsworth manager is just as bored as they are, but doesn’t have the wit, imagination or confidence to be rebellious, so he leans into his dull job. Bless him. He keeps his pony tail to show himself he hasn’t completely disappeared.

Dh and I finished it just now. It’s just lovely, so beautifully written. Great characters. Loved the music too. I think we’ll probably rewatch so we can enjoy it all over again.

Blonds, I don’t think ‘ The detectorists’ is on I player anymore , but if it does come back it’s worth a look. Similar music and writing style and the main characters are so lovely.
It evolves around a bunch of people who are looking for Roman coins and other old things in farmers fields and they meet up to show off what they have found with their metal detectors.
It is really gentle comedy , lots of nice moments and funny bits and one of the best shows I’ve seen!
This reminds of me of it a bit.
Toby Jones is very good in it.

It’s on BBC iPlayer

the80sweregreat · 10/02/2026 19:39

Oh that’s good that the detectorists are on I player.
Wasn’t sure before. It is good

tinyspiny · 10/02/2026 19:46

We have now watched the first 2 and I love it , fabulous characters , just having a break to watch the Olympic ice skating .

Bougainsillier · 10/02/2026 19:57

Have now watched the whole series. Not for me; yes well written but the story left me cold.. all a bit too ridiculous.
Bring back Detectorists.

allmycagesweremental · 10/02/2026 20:12

Just finished the whole thing and loved it. He’s just so talented. DH and I have loved everything he’s done really. Like detectorists it’s gentle but warm and the characters are so well written and rounded out. Really hoping the next series doesn’t take too long although fully admit we’ve spoiled it for ourselves by watching in one go rather than pacing ourselves!!

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/02/2026 20:23

Just remember all those who have binged that this is tv paced

I watched the first episode with my eldest and we loved it. So funny and charming and sad, all at the same time. I loved the ‘which bit? Underwater or welder?’ conversation 😂😂

dailyconniptions · 11/02/2026 00:26

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/02/2026 14:18

It seems it is - found it

I will add to my very long list of tv 😂

Make sure it goes straight to the top of your list!

I'm with you, Detectorists deserves to be at the top of everyone's list. One of the best TV programmes ever for me.
Loving SP so far, it has a very similar feel, and Pearce Quigley and Michael Palin are great. Watched two but trying to resist binging the rest!

Freysimo · 11/02/2026 07:01

Bougainsillier · 10/02/2026 12:52

Hmm. Well I’m going against the grain a bit. Just watched the first one and I was a bit bored. However as a massive Detectorists fan I will watch the next episode and hope I’m wrong.

I absolutely loved Detectorists but Small Prophets left me cold. DH will stick with it, I won't.

Blondeshavemorefun · 11/02/2026 09:28

I started D last night - so far it doesn’t seem that funny /good

runs and hides

but haven’t seen all of e1 yet so it may improve

Oh my, was coming to say how I envy anyone starting Detectorists for the first time. Stick with it, @Blondeshavemorefun - it will yield unimaginable rewards.

I started Small Prophets last night - and seem to have binged the first four episodes. MC has been saying in interviews that the BBC basically let him do whatever he wanted - so it certainly is quirky in the extreme, marrying genres and themes in unfamiliar ways.

It’s fun spotting all the New National Treasure Actors having fun with the beautifully specific characters he’s written. And it’s the opposite of Detectorists in that interiors here are incredibly complex and detailed, whereas in Detectorists people’s homes were rather stark.

I’m still not entirely sure how I feel about it as TV drama - will have to see how it ends.

Umanresources · 11/02/2026 13:46

I'm loving Small Prophets, having just watched the first one with DD, and she enjoyed it too. We are going to watch it with OH again, so I'm looking forward to that. We both laughed out loud at underwater welder and the Brazil nuts 🤣 i want something made from that new colour as well.

@Blondeshavemorefun I took a while to get into Detectorists, but have watched it a few times and got more out of it each time. It died take a while to get into it, as it's gentle paced.

Tocsin · 11/02/2026 15:27

Well, now I’ve finished it all - and still don’t know what to make of it. I laughed a fair bit - but some of the genre-mashing didn’t quite work for me.

Interesting, though …

tinyspiny · 11/02/2026 18:39

We’ve now watched it all and I think it’s fabulous , no spoilers though as it’s @Blondeshavemorefun thread .

RampantIvy · 11/02/2026 18:43

"Have you had your break?"

That's going to be up there with Rene's "You stupid woman" in Allo Allo.

I've watched it all - no spoilers - and enjoyed it. It has some quirky charm and a gentle humour. Pierce Q doing what he does well. Much of it is daft, of course but it's not meant to make sense. I think they could have stretched the story and developed the characters further really.

febstoptherainplease · 11/02/2026 21:53

I've just read a theory that McKenzie Crook's character is an escaped / evolved homunculi and that's why he's acts the way he does ;)

Also I really liked Bev and hope she is more involved in the plot next series. Clive was awful.
