I am old and I remember when you used to watch a series on telly at the same time every week and would look forward to the next episode. So that's what I'm going to do with this. Am interested to see where it goes - and liked that they weren't in any rush. Michael Palin reminded me of my grandfather who had dementia but every now and then would tell amazing stories about his exploits in the past, I wouldn't have been surprised if he had grown homunculi in a shed either.

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/02/2026 23:17

@RNApolymerase all my threads on telly addicts are at tv pace

to savour and enjoy an episode and look forward to the next one whether the following night or the next week

and to chat /theories if a murder /mystery etc

The take on Lady Bracknell had me in hysterics. Also loved the people yelling in the car park. Looking forward to the rest!

Enrichetta · 10/02/2026 05:07

Definitely too good to binge watch. One to savour. In fact I’ll probably watch the first episode again as I must have missed a few of the quirky references.

Love the music. MC has an ear for using it to support the characters and the action in a very understated way.

SheepInTheTrough · 10/02/2026 09:09

"A hand drill!"

"When the colour comes here I'm definitely going to buy a shirt"

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/02/2026 12:00

It’s very cleverly done.

watched again today and more jokes /one liners you miss

I did feel for him tbh. To lose the love of his life but not know if dead or alive

and will lose his home as not his house and wasn’t married

Hmm. Well I’m going against the grain a bit. Just watched the first one and I was a bit bored. However as a massive Detectorists fan I will watch the next episode and hope I’m wrong.

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/02/2026 13:06

I’ve never seen or heard of detectorists

Blonds, I don’t think ‘ The detectorists’ is on I player anymore , but if it does come back it’s worth a look. Similar music and writing style and the main characters are so lovely.
It evolves around a bunch of people who are looking for Roman coins and other old things in farmers fields and they meet up to show off what they have found with their metal detectors.
It is really gentle comedy , lots of nice moments and funny bits and one of the best shows I’ve seen!
This reminds of me of it a bit.
Toby Jones is very good in it.

Snapespeare · 10/02/2026 13:13

I've binged. It's a lovely gentle comedy with well observed character-types - the neighbours, the jobsworth manager. My only contended point was Michaels wardrobe - a bit trendy-east-London work wear that creatives wear when they've never dirtied their hands. It's nice to see Sophie Willan in something quiet. I spent an inordinate amount of time yelling 'dont you dare touch that poor man's garden!' at the screen.

Enjoyed a lot.

the80sweregreat · 10/02/2026 13:14

It’s a bit slow I think , but it’s also intriguing and I want to know if he ever finds his partner or why she left..
It’s nice to watch something not involving spies or the police !
It has a gentle pace to it.

the80sweregreat · 10/02/2026 13:16

I like Sophie Willan too! She was brilliant as Alma and nice to see a working class girl do well , that was a good drama.
Her partner in this was in Run away on Netflix and Big boys.
I miss Netflix , have given up my subscription due to running costs , but kept bbc ! )

DrPrunesqualer · 10/02/2026 13:19

Couldn’t hold back so watched the whole series
Classic Mackenzie Crook interest area based on historical texts.
You’ll all be delighted to hear at the end of the last one it said

‘To be continued’
so more to follow

Anyone know who did the music ??
Johnny Flynns music for the detectorists was a delight.

The Detectorists is
One of my all time favourites !

Crook brings in peace and tranquility and brings to the fore many issues we are battling today.

He does it with The Detectorists and again
In The Prophets, small moments happening in the background
With subtle references
the lights coming on at night,
the paved over front gardens we see throughout
the lady killing slugs even though her plants are plastic, the neighbours thinking Michael’s a bit mad just because his property has greenery

Im hoping our neighbours watch it, perhaps they’ll ’get it’.

Chuffingcupboard · 10/02/2026 13:29

Detectorists is still on iPlayer, including the Christmas specials (I finished a rewatch last week). Well worth watching but it's a bit quiet to start then appreciation grows if you pay attention.

the80sweregreat · 10/02/2026 13:31

Oh that’s nice the detectorists is still on there ! I’ve seen them all twice as well. It’s so good
Love ‘ Simon and Garfunkel’ , such baddies lol

the80sweregreat · 10/02/2026 13:34

Mackenzie Crook played such a nerdy , boring character in the UK ‘ the office ‘ ( Gareth) yet has gone to write such great dramas himself. So different to Merchant and Gervais!

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/02/2026 13:06

I’ve never seen or heard of detectorists

It's fantastic. Well worth watching at your own pace. Wonderful Suffolk setting with big skies. Just lovely. On iPlayer.

Meant to watch Small Prophets last night but was too tired. Will do so tonight.

No call for buckets, everything is plumbed in these days. Your best bet is a hose pipe.

Hope you like it blonds. It isn’t a fast moving show , but stick with it. It is a bit similar to this new show in regards to the music and character driven.

Fransgran · 10/02/2026 14:26

I absolutely adore "Detectorists" and very nuch enjoyed the first episode of "Small Prophets". I'm not going to binge as I like having something to look forward to. Mackenzie Crook is very, very talented.
