Absolutely delightful. My brain is frazzled with world/personal events and this series is like a warm hug for the soul.

GrillaMilla · 25/02/2026 09:23

I have watched it through 3 times now!

Just brilliantly clever funny moments, sometimes in only a few seconds (the Bananarama T-shirt opening sequence is superbly done).

MC is a comedy genius.

In case anybody doesn't know, it is a real book. wiki.

Was anybody else getting flashbacks to Harrison's watch in Only Fools and Horses?Grin

Gosh, I’d completely forgotten I saw the book at Liverpool Central Library!

What an utter joy this was. From start to finish.

5 stars.

More please.

Kacey/Lauren Patel makes me think of Anna Paul from Casualty all those years ago (Zita Sattar)

That’s who she reminds me of! It’s bugged me for weeks!

Just finished watching this, I loved it. There's a word (I can't remember what it is though) that means being nostalgic for something you haven't actually experienced, and this made me feel that way.

Beeinalily · 06/03/2026 23:24

Oh the PP @GrillaMilla asking about the seagulls, Michael said that he wanted to count seagulls on an island and that that was an actual job.

Oh thanks, I was wondering too. You do se those adverts occasionally to live on a remote place to do conservation and never speak to someone for a year, so makes sense.

GrillaMilla · 07/03/2026 08:11

Thanks @Beeinalily
There's so many random details it's hard to know what's relevant to the story!

Where do I apply 😂

Although I'd need a TV

Anemoia.

I was upset to find that it was invented by an American because nostalgia seems such an English thing. But then I find that 'nostalgia' itself is also a (relatively) recently-coined-and-not-by-an-Englishman word, too!

Yes, she does, and Zita was in The Cleaner with Greg Davis.
I’ve loved this series so much that I’m on my fourth viewing. I’m not particularly a lover of fantasy stories, but I never doubted that Michael’s dad had the instructions for making the Homunculi. I think the set designers and props makers must have had a fabulous time creating this world. I loved the contraption that his dad made, in the care home and how lovely Michael was with the people who were kind to him and his dad, like Hilary in the care home and the next door neighbour with slug pellets on the plastic plants.

mrswhiplington · 07/03/2026 16:20

I loved the scene where the mugger thought he was Father Christmas and gave him his phone back. There are so many subtle things that you would miss if you didn't pay attention.

TheUsualChaos · 07/03/2026 16:44

That scene was funny but also so deeply sad and tragic somehow.

How was it sad and tragic? Didn't it show how stupid muggers are, either on drugs or just a bit thick?

I agree. No child grows up wanting to be a drug addict - I took that scene to be that he was reverting to a happier time in his life when Santa was real, and perhaps he grew up in a family where there was a Christmas with presents. Even though he was drug addict he couldn't rob the Santa of his childhood.

Or maybe I totally overthought it!
