This thread was requested on my previous thread ("How to watch The Pitt") so here goes.
What did you think? Favourite character? Better than ER?

Interesting article in the Telegraph about Michael Creighton’s widow suing the makers of this show for ripping off her late husband’s original ideas from ER.

Interesting article in the Telegraph about Michael Creighton’s widow suing the makers of this show for ripping off her late husband’s original ideas from ER.

They asked permission.
She refused.

@Highonmyownsupply I kind of agree with you. This has been much hyped in US, “best TV of our generation”, etc, etc, but it seems to me like yet another take on a medical drama, and a lot of it is unbelievable. Like, why aren’t they wrestling every intake to the ground, demanding they see their proof of medical insurance? It also seems too squeaky clean, and there are no typical FUBARS such as equipment malfunctioning, test results going missing, etc. I got HBO Max to watch this & I’ll watch the 2 seasons, but there are a lot of other box sets that I like better.

Well, because there's a law called EMTALA that says they can't do that. What happens if you don't have insurance is just a whacking great bill. That becomes a storyline in S2.

It's a bit of a slow burn IMO. If you go in expecting to be massively impressed in episode 1, you'll be disappointed. It gradually comes together.

Bunfighter · 01/04/2026 07:30

I'm watching series 1 and the shoulder dystocia episode was very similar to my ds1's birth. It wasnt shoulder dystocia but his hand was up by his face which made delivery challenging. I then had a pph like the lady in the show. I can remember saying "I think a lot of liquid just came out" and then feeling really sleepy. Anyway what pissed me off was when the other medic came in and said "who's the father" then men said "we both are" when she said "who's the mother" they said "we both are" again!!! I found that horribly offensive and I'd love to know if others thought the same.

BishyBarnyBee · 01/04/2026 09:20

Sorry if this has been answered.

I've just started and the overwhelmed ER room clogged up with patents waiting for a bed upstairs obviously could be any hospital in the UK.

I was under the impression that if you had insurance, American healthcare was better funded and less chaotic than the NHS.

So is this a public ER for anyone, and there are better ones if you have insurance? Or is all ER care everywhere chaotic and underfunded?

knitnerd90 · 01/04/2026 10:32

ERs everywhere are a disaster. City ERs tend to be bad. The show does sort of push it — generally speaking, ERs aren't that consistently bad. (Series 2 is set on 4th of July, which would be a bad day: lots of accidents, doctors and urgent cares closed.) Also, the hospital is a trauma centre which is the highest level of emergency in the US, so it gets cases smaller hospitals can't handle. The real hospital it's based on, by the way, which they used for the exteriors, is Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.

A theme in Series 1 is that part of the reason patients get stuck in the ER is insufficient staffing upstairs to open more beds. This is especially an issue in hospitals (public or private) that are heavily reliant on Medicaid/Medicare funding.

Moanranger · 01/04/2026 12:54

@BishyBarnyBee more money is spent on health care in US v UK - US spends around 15% of GDP while UK spends 9-10% of GDP. Measurable outcomes are about the same for both - middling. These include things like maternal/infant mortality (better in UK) and cancer treatment, time to treatment & outcomes (better in US) There are loads more. Given the amount of money spent US system really underperforms.

BishyBarnyBee · 01/04/2026 15:39

Thanks @knitnerd90 @Moanranger really interesting. I think I'd assumed America was two tier with poor quality public hospitals and high quality private, obviously it's more nuanced than that.

Episode 13.
Two to go.....
So much in this episode. A night shift spin off would be cool.
Orlando (diabetic guy) and the asthma kid....makes you grateful for our NHS.
Unbelievable that someone can't even get an inhaler 🙁
So.....after an entire shift Robbie has finally noticed that Dr Al possibly might have something going on with her. Blimey Robbie - you took your time noticing that.
I'm worried about the shredder. Is someone going to get their fingers trapped??
Poor Oglivie. Will he come back?
Santos seems to be calming down with her mood.... hopefully she won't use the scalpel. She really needs to tell Whittaker to stay living with her. She needs him.
So two more hours to go of the day shift tying up their loose ends and then Robbie goes and ends the episode with....
"What if I don't come back...."
😭😭😭😭😭

What did Santos put in her pocket through. Is she going to try and set up Langdon to get rid of him?

It was a scalpel.
She apparently cuts herself.
We very briefly saw old scars on her legs.

I am watching on HBO Max but am up to date on spoilers. I adore Langdon and Mel

knitnerd90 · 05/04/2026 02:35

The inhaler story is even more maddening than you realise from the show. Pennsylvania is one of the states where all children are eligible for Child Health Plus (there's some subtle differences between CHIP and Medicaid but they don't matter here). Every state has a CHIP program but some have income limits; Pennsylvania doesn't. You might pay a small premium based on your income but all children are covered. Great, right?

Except they make you manually recertify every year, instead of an automatic system. And Republicans deliberately use recertification as a way to get people off Medicaid. People have trouble completing the paperwork. During the pandemic they suspended recertification requirements and it helped a lot of people. They could make it easier and hook it into tax filing. Republicans don't want it that way on purpose.

Scorchio84 · 07/04/2026 16:17

Holy shit @knitnerd90 that's disgraceful!

I'm watching on HBO Max & enjoying it but also rewatching ER on Netflix as a result 🥰

Needmorelego · 07/04/2026 16:47

@knitnerd90 I couldn't quite tell if the asthma boy was under 18 or not.
He looked slightly older.
But I think children can stay on their parents insurance until 21 ?
I am completely guessing though. I really don't know.

OP posts:
knitnerd90 · 08/04/2026 08:00

for Medicaid you would need to qualify on your own from 18. On employer based insurance you can stay on till 26.

Northerndoglover · 08/04/2026 13:56

I binged all of Season 1 over Easter and am up to date on the HBO Season 2.

Im verging on saying this is better than ER, but Noah Wyle is outstanding (and reminds me of the days I videoed ER to watch with my mum). Some of it is a bit too graphic for me (the eye procedure and leg degloving) but it certainly keeps you watching. Definitely no phone distractions during this!

Bit sad to realise it will be July before we are up to Ep 15.

(I also think we need more of Abbott, he was fantastic in Southland.)

Moanranger · 08/04/2026 20:18

I started watching this on HBO but am now watching on 1movie. No quality difference. Minor annoyance is that 1movie defaults to captions every time I start watching an episode, so I have to pause it & turn these off. Now at Episode 10
@Northerndoglover agreed re graphic!

I like having captions (subtitles) on but the last couple of episodes they haven't been there.
How are you turning them off? Because I might be able to do the opposite and switch them back on 🙂
