What’s the best TV Series you’ve watched in the last 5 years?

For me it’s the German Series Dark on Netflix and the American series 1883 which is Paramount + but has now turned up on Netflix.

Dark which was about time travel really made you think and 1883 about Pioneer life/Cowboys was just quietly beautiful

The sad thing is @anotherside there would be so many mentions of GOT if it hadn’t taken the serious downturn it did, even though it was slightly over 5 years ago.

The Night Manager

My Brilliant Friend. Absolutely beautifully filmed and amazing cast.

another vote for breaking bad

@Missj25 I felt like the 2 main Stars wanted certain outcomes for their characters regardless of whether it was right for the overall story.

I hated Ruth’s ending

Mottledgrey · 11/05/2025 20:45

The boys!!

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 11/05/2025 20:49

Yep, THAT was what I was referring to! Totally the wrong ending @Missj25

I definitely have the same taste as you, although I have not yet seen Dark.

I thought Chernobyl was one of the best things ever made for TV, along with Mad Men, Sopranos and The Wire.

And I read all the novels before My Brilliant Friend and was worried that the TV series would ruin it but they created it exactly as i saw it in my mind's eye. Superb.

I have recently watched The Bureau which was brilliant and am currently watching Yellowstone, which is pretty good so far.

Thanks! I’ll check out your recommendations 🙂

Shetland
Mr Bates versus the Post Office

Babylon 5 (I cried when Marcus died).
First Season of Jessica Jones (David Tennant was truly repellant)
The Gilded Age

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 11/05/2025 21:08

Yes @DisabledDemon ! I’m not always keen on DT but he was genuinely terrifying in Jessica Jones

I've said this before but G'kar is my all time favourite alien. I'm trying to find somewhere to watch it all again

AlannaOfTrebond · 11/05/2025 21:10

The Last Kingdom
Outlander
Yellowstone/1883/1923 (although I do agree about season 2 of 1923 - it definitely jumped the shark, soooo disappointing...)
Detectorists
Snowpiercer
Silo

Mummadeze · 11/05/2025 21:10

Other than Succession and The White Lotus. I really enjoyed Colin from Accounts, Nobody Wants This (both comedy dramas) and Squid Games the Challenge which is a game show reality series.

It was the idea that he could tell someone to hold their breath and they would do that until they dropped dead.

Arran2024 · 11/05/2025 21:10

I would also mention The Chelsea Detective, with Adrian Scarborough, though it's on Acorn tv so not that accessible.

And I loved Strike, based on the JK Rowling books.

And The White Lotus, especially series 2

Ooh yes, definitely The White Lotus. How could I have forgotten that?!

It gets repeated quite frequently. If you've got Prime Video, I think it's available there to stream.

PansyP · 11/05/2025 21:21

Succession

Loved Farscape. If you liked that, you might enjoy Killjoys.

Thefsm · 11/05/2025 21:27

Dark hands down was the best show ever. More recently I really enjoyed Severance on apple+ and for comedy I loved the good place and resident alien.

justasking111 · 11/05/2025 21:29

American Housewife made me laugh.
