What’s the best TV Series you’ve watched in the last 5 years?

For me it’s the German Series Dark on Netflix and the American series 1883 which is Paramount + but has now turned up on Netflix.

Dark which was about time travel really made you think and 1883 about Pioneer life/Cowboys was just quietly beautiful

It's Okay Not To Be Okay on Netflix. Completely mesmerising. Beautifully filmed and acted, plus amazing story telling.

I am so gutted about The OA still, Jason Isaacs said 5 series were planned. I wish I knew what was going to happen

Another vote for Ozark, ghosts and the dectorists. One that hasn't been mentioned is a South Korean show called when life gives you tangerines on netflix.

The Diplomat- amazing series, highly recommend it

TattiePants · 11/05/2025 19:51

@EineReiseDurchDieZeit we often like the same books so I’m going to try some of your recommendations (Dark & Paradise). Have you tried Lawman: Bass Reeves? It’s about the first black deputy marshal and was originally going to be part of Yellowstone but ended up being a stand alone series. I don’t think it’s as good as Yellowstone but still worth watching.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 11/05/2025 19:51

@Missj25 Definitely! I didn’t agree with how it ended though

I’m going pure fluff on this one:
Rivals
Ghosts
Bridgerton

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 11/05/2025 19:57

@TattiePants Vaguely heard of it, will give it a go! I have recommended Dark a lot but a lot of people I told quit it for being too hard to get your head round. I would watch it in the original German too. Paradise is more mainstream but was completely compelling.

Wolf Hall - The mirror and the light. The acting, costumes, sets were just so good. Mark Rylance was superb
Mr Bates v the Post office. Again, cracking acting and I ended up very angry at the cover ups and lies.
Breathless was a 3 parter on the Covid pandemic which was very well done

SchoolMum66 · 11/05/2025 20:02

My Brilliant Friend.

It's an Italian series; I watched the box set on a London to Sydney flight (which was glorious as I was on my own, whereas usually do the flight with 3 children!).

Loved the series, sad but brilliant.

Oldheadyoungshoulders · 11/05/2025 20:04

Shogun, if that counts as a series.

QuantumPanic · 11/05/2025 20:08

Justified
Succession
The OA

All brilliant in their own way.

One show I haven't seen mentioned is Midnight Mass on netflix. I watched it thinking it was going to be a standard vampire story, but it turned out to be far stranger and more beautiful. It's one of the few TV shows that have really stayed with me.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 11/05/2025 20:10

@QuantumPanic I started Midnight Mass and can’t remember why I didn’t continue

OOO! How has LOD not got lots of mentions? If it has I’ve accidentally missed it. Excellent shout

Call My Agent-the original French version. Wonderful characters and funny.

Bloozie · 11/05/2025 20:31

Succession, Ozark, Schitt's Creek, Ted Lasso.

It feels like I haven't watched anything AMAZING for years.

Yeah , it’s a though they got sick of writing & so a rubbish ending ! !

anotherside · 11/05/2025 20:32

Didn’t like Succession. Too dry, too pleased with itself, and not that compelling.

terracelane23 · 11/05/2025 20:34

The Handmaids tale, The last of us, Squid game

anotherside · 11/05/2025 20:35

Last five years? The Last of Us for me. Though nothing has reached Breaking Bad/Sopranos/early GoT level for a while now. Schitts Creek was brilliant light entertainment though.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 11/05/2025 20:35

@Missj25 I felt like the 2 main Stars wanted certain outcomes for their characters regardless of whether it was right for the overall story.
