For me it’s the German Series Dark on Netflix and the American series 1883 which is Paramount + but has now turned up on Netflix.

Dark which was about time travel really made you think and 1883 about Pioneer life/Cowboys was just quietly beautiful

The Handmaids Tale I think has just consistently blown me away.

I know I'm in the minority here but I really didn't like it at all.

mambojambodothetango · 11/05/2025 18:17

Oh goodness how could I forget I May Destroy You. DH hated it because he has no empathy for characters who put themselves in vulnerable positions (we had some interesting chats about this) but some key scenes in that show live rent free in my head. Like the group therapy scene where it turns out the facilitator was a frenemy from school with her own past issues but she's now admiring the protagonist's philosophy with a knowing smile... I just loved everything about that.

And can I also say episode 1 of Adolescene, which stands out for me as a gem of TV drama.

Succession, This is US, Hacks, White Lotus.

I liked Dark, but I found the episode that ended series two really annoying so didn’t carry on. Maybe I should give it another go. I think it was a bit Twin Peaks meets Stranger Things (but I don’t like ST, too violent for me these days).

Chernobyl was exquisite. Apart from Mad Men and the Sopranos (both old now), TV doesn’t get any better than that.

I thought The English with Emily Blunt was pretty damn good.

And as another PP said up thread, My Brilliant Friend. That was also spectacular. Stunning.

I definitely have the same taste as you, although I have not yet seen Dark.

I thought Chernobyl was one of the best things ever made for TV, along with Mad Men, Sopranos and The Wire.

And I read all the novels before My Brilliant Friend and was worried that the TV series would ruin it but they created it exactly as i saw it in my mind's eye. Superb.

I have recently watched The Bureau which was brilliant and am currently watching Yellowstone, which is pretty good so far.

Good Girls, Firefly Lane, Yellowstone.

Picked up some great recommendations here. Going to watch a few from the list including Yellowstone/1883, but thought I'd mention Godless for anyone wanting another Western. Enjoyed it way more than I thought I would.

I also really rated Godless. The singing at the beginning is haunting. 1883 has a similar haunting quality.

I am relieved you suggested, as after 10 pages, thought it might be only me!

MaidOfSteel · 11/05/2025 19:22

The Split, which I only discovered in the last year. Brilliant telly.
1883 & 1923. I hope there will be more from this franchise.
Also discovered in the last few months, Downton Abbey.
I’m reading all your recommendations as I’m very much a telly addict.

awaynboilyurheid · 11/05/2025 19:28

Breaking bad is fantastic but more than 5 years ago now,
Your honour , was also gripping TV

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 11/05/2025 19:29

@MaidOfSteel I am currently doing a Downton rewatch!

First series of OA
Handmaids tale

First series of the OA is brilliant. Totally unlike anything else, completely outlandish premise and yet somehow has a ring of truth to it.

Idontgiveashitanymore · 11/05/2025 19:48

Slow horses, for all mankind, foundation, Andor.
