For me it’s the German Series Dark on Netflix and the American series 1883 which is Paramount + but has now turned up on Netflix.

Dark which was about time travel really made you think and 1883 about Pioneer life/Cowboys was just quietly beautiful

Dark is one of my absolute obsessions, the others being From and Yellowjackets.

Industry
Shogun - loved the book and this is a great adaptation.

I liked Dark, but I found the episode that ended series two really annoying so didn’t carry on. Maybe I should give it another go. I think it was a bit Twin Peaks meets Stranger Things (but I don’t like ST, too violent for me these days).

Chernobyl was exquisite. Apart from Mad Men and the Sopranos (both old now), TV doesn’t get any better than that.

I thought The English with Emily Blunt was pretty damn good.

And as another PP said up thread, My Brilliant Friend. That was also spectacular. Stunning.

The English was brilliant. Loved it.

Smittenkitchen · 11/05/2025 00:22

Yellowstone. Lord and mercy - Rip, need I say more??

Tranklements · 11/05/2025 00:24

Brassic
Big Boys
Detectorists
Ghosts

MoominMai · 11/05/2025 00:25

British drama at its finest with the awesome national treasure Sarah Lancashire: HAPPY VALLEY!

MyLittleNest · 11/05/2025 00:28

Firefly Lane
The Americans (agree with earlier poster!)
Succession
Only Murders in the Building
Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
Grace and Frankie

socialdilemmawhattodo · 11/05/2025 00:32

Yes Mr Bates was fab.

But actually my fave: Resident Alien - a genuinely funny US import of sci-fi and drama. Loved it.

WhiteRosesAndCandles · 11/05/2025 00:36

highlandcoo · 11/05/2025 00:14

I agree with:

Succession
Slow Horses
Happy Valley
Schitts Creek
It's a Sin
Fleabag

the first series of The Great was very entertaining

and no one has mentioned Killing Eve yet. I loved Jodie Comer especially in the first series.

Loved all of these, must give Succession a go.

I loved Travellers on Netflix. I think each new series was released on Boxing Day. I loved it

I also liked OA.

Apple has some great stuff. Slow Horses of course, I liked Silo, Severance and Shrinking. We also like Mythic Quest.

MarxistMags · 11/05/2025 00:37

St Elsewhere, it led on to E.R. simply superb, and educational.

CissOff · 11/05/2025 00:41

Bad sisters - not something I would usually watch but loved it. Sharon Horgan is a genius.
Bump - the first time I’ve ever heard of Claudia Karvan and she’s brilliant. Loved it.

There are so many series mentioned that I have watched to a point - Outlander, Handmaids Tale, Ozark - on here that I must really go back to.

Huge fan of Kin. Absolutely amazing series.

Cursula · 11/05/2025 00:41

Fake. Really good.

bendmeoverbackwards · 11/05/2025 00:42

This is Us
Derry Girls
Big Bang Theory (currently watching for the first time as recommended by dd3)

Hysterectomynext · 11/05/2025 00:43

Money Heist; Squid Game, Schitts Creek. These were fantastic shows. They have that edgy quality.

I don’t watch much TV so I’m interested in reading other’s recommendations. Most of the programs listed here I’ve never watched. I’ll give a couple a try.

StScholastica · 11/05/2025 00:45

Spooks (old but Gold)
Killing Eve
Kin
Happy Valley
Blue lights
Succession
Fleabag
The Responder

moto748e · 11/05/2025 00:46

If there has to be #1, in the time-scale, it has to be Dark for me. The uncanny casting, the brilliance of all the cast, of all ages. Like a few, I think, it nearly lost me in S2, but still managed to finesse it briliantly in the final series. And plenty of other great stuff; Mr Bates, Brassic, Motherland...

BrumMama · 11/05/2025 00:46

Hand maids tale (I enjoyed it better as it went on and got less explicit in the sense of rape scenes) which scene was it that put you off?

last season of ‘you’ was v good.

purpleme12 · 11/05/2025 00:49

I'm not sure I can remember everything I watched over the past 5 years!

But I really enjoyed Everything I Know About Love

And The Flatshare

moto748e · 11/05/2025 00:58

I thought the first season of The Handmaid's Tale was brilliantly done (even though I'm not a big fan of Elisabeth Moss), but I didn't like that it went so far past the book.

GinAndJuice99 · 11/05/2025 01:03

Station Eleven

After that, Severance (first season) and White Lotus (all seasons)

Iwiicit · 11/05/2025 01:06

For something bang up to date, I am currently watching, and really enjoying, Your Friends and Neighbours with Jon Hamm.

I loved Unbelievable. Can you link to the article you read please

Kaitlyn Dever is such a fantastic actor too! I'd read about the case not long before Unbelievable aired and watched it in a couple of sittings I think partly because I knew what had happened and was interested, obvioulsy, but mostly because it was done so well. It was stand out in the way some of the recent factual dramas that have changed things in the UK have been, but better in terms of the overall feel and of course, the performance of Kaitlyn Dever.
