What’s the best TV Series you’ve watched in the last 5 years?

For me it’s the German Series Dark on Netflix and the American series 1883 which is Paramount + but has now turned up on Netflix.

Dark which was about time travel really made you think and 1883 about Pioneer life/Cowboys was just quietly beautiful

Killing Eve mention made me wonder how on earth I'd "forgotten" it. I hadn't of course, but it's one for me where the ending absolutely ruined all the good before it. I hated the ending. It's a Sin too. Hated the final episode and it ruined the previous ones. I genuinely hate it when that happens for me - other people will like the endings of course - because it can seriously ruin something I was more than half way in love with.

FreezeDriedStrawberries · 11/05/2025 01:39

Life On Mars/Ashes to Ashes (the latter the best ending to a TV series ever imo)

Manifest

swimlyn · 11/05/2025 01:45

Detectorists.

So well put together, brilliantly scripted and very funny.

FagsMagsandBags · 11/05/2025 01:46

Grace and Frankie, thanks for the reminder was only telling a friend last week that she should start watching it because it's a joy and there are so many series!

Ditto how could I ever forget The Good Place, which said friend above couldn't get into. She's going to really miss out on one of the loveliest series to appear on our screens in a long, long time.

The English was sublime, thanks for the reminder.

As was Maid with Margaret Qualley who will have had help in her career because nepo and all that but she's a really good actress so I'm glad her break was easier than it could have been and may not ever have been because she's quirky looking which doesn't necessarily play well in them their entertainment circles. I really enjoyed that.

And thank you for the mention of Bad Sisters which I really wanted to watch when it came out but couldn't because I didn't have Apple TV. I have now and I'm going to watch me some of that.

@EineReiseDurchDieZeit thanks for the thread. It's been great seeing some things that I love, some I don't know, some I now want to watch and generally just the sort of thread that can perk a person up!

My partner fell asleep during every episode of Dark. Then he’d wake up and ask me what he’d missed. And I would patiently fill him in. After the final episode of season one, I again narrated the episode and he said ‘I can’t wait to watch season 2’’. No chance 🤣 I enjoyed it though.

Better Call Saul is my favourite ever.

"I can’t wait to watch season 2’’

😂 😆

The one about the police service in Belfast but I can't remember its name.

Gangs of London was good.

Bad Sisters.

Blue Lights was the one about the police in NI. Agree it was excellent.

Vanillazebra · 11/05/2025 01:57

Bad Sisters

DreamTheMoors · 11/05/2025 03:19

The WORST series ever is the ads that @Mumsnet allow to infest the sides of my phone so that I can’t read anything.
Seriously - cancel it.

Breaking Bad

Alice in Borderland is mega…I can’t wait for the final series this year!

spoonbillstretford · 11/05/2025 03:33

The Diplomat is one of the best series I've seen ever. Can't wait for more.

Didn't get on with Killing Eve but absolutely loved Keeping Faith. Not sure if that wasn't on more than 5 years ago now.

Detectorists is utterly lovely, one I rewatch happily if it's on again.

DreamTheMoors · 11/05/2025 03:39

My current favorite is on HBO, “The Gilded Age.”
It’s about the millionaire families of the robber barons who built the railroads and ships in the US - and their mansions in NYC and Newport, RI, back in the 1800s.
It tells of the drama showing the establishment allowing the nouveau riche into society and those newcomers muscling their way in, like how the old timers wouldn’t allow the newcomers into their snooty opera house - so the very rich newcomers built their very own opera house and then got better opera singers to perform.
It’s great nighttime drama. Catty women, unrequited love, lots of comeuppance. The men don’t disappoint either - they’re vicious in business.
It’s all based on reality.
The only thing I don’t like about it is it takes forever between one season to end and the next season to start.
edited for typos

spoonbillstretford · 11/05/2025 03:42

Yes, I enjoyed The Gilded Age. US Downton Abbey basically.

JuliaLivilla · 11/05/2025 03:47

One that was extremely surprised to enjoy as much as I did was "Justified" about a US Marshall forced to return to his hometown in Kentucky. It has great writing and acting, fully fleshed characters and a dark, subtle and, I suppose, sardonic humour. Read great reviews and thought I'll give it a go, and was instantly hooked and watched the whole 80(?) episodes over the space of a couple of weeks. This seldom happens with streaming: I frequently start and don't bother to finish. I am actually thinking of re-watching it, which I nowadays never do.

SantiagoShaming · 11/05/2025 04:07

Severance, Outlander, The Pitt, The Devil’s Hour, Wheel of Time.

SantiagoShaming · 11/05/2025 04:08

Omg yes, +1 for The Gilded Age. It’s brilliant.

I'm a bit of a Sci Fi fan, I enjoyed Bodies and The Lazarus Project. I'm not sure they would feature as the best though, but worth a watch.

I loved Unbelievable. Can you link to the article you read please

https://www.propublica.org/article/false-rape-accusations-an-unbelievable-story

Here it is.

Everyone else: trigger warning for rape.

One of the things I thought the series got absolutely right was the level of violence shown. It was just enough to illustrate how terrifying it must have been for the victims and no more. And the story focused very much on the victims and the police investigations, not the rapist (who was basically a nobody).

An Unbelievable Story of Rape

An 18-year-old said she was attacked at knifepoint. Then she said she made it up. That’s where our story begins.

Nobody Wants This was gorgeous, feelgood telly. Also: Shrinking, Platonic and The Four Seasons are all little treasures.

Goldfish93 · 11/05/2025 06:50

Ted Lasso 😊

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 10/05/2025 21:39

LOVE Ted Lasso

Ted lasso turned out to be one of the best shows I’ve ever seen, given my reluctance to even start it. I was gutted when we finished it.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 11/05/2025 07:40

Ted Lasso

It's A Sin

Member984815 · 11/05/2025 07:46

Dark is by far the best thing on Netflix, a similar show is don't come home.
