I'm in tears. Maybe I'm just emotional but can't believe how much the show means to me

And the ending... tidy!

I didn’t think it was as good as all the hype but did enjoy it. Thought something big was going to happen as they said there could never be another and we’d be able to see why when we watched it but really, they could do another.

I don't understand your comment. It was a perfect ending.

I loved it! There were some complaints that we still never found out what happened on the fishing trip but I prefer to keep it a mystery. It's always been a running joke that they are interrupted when telling the story and they stayed consistent with that. I thought it was a very satisfying ending and I laughed through most of it. Same loveable characters.

Budge, what's your real name?
Errrmmmm ... 🤣

Really enjoyed it. I was rather dreading they'd go Derry Girls and kill someone off, luckily they resisted that.

And Neil the Baby singing. 😍

I was imagining another five years on and NTB and one of Gavin & Stacey's girls fall in love ... Maybe both, for drama.

I loved it, but felt like Blackbird was a really weird choice for a wedding song. I know it was about Nessa and Smithy "waiting for this moment to arrive" and their freedom to express their feelings etc, but for Smithy and Sonia's wedding it was a weird choice!

TennisWithDeborah · 26/12/2024 01:01

A wonderful finale.

There’s a Twitter thread saying that the Sonia actor was sworn to secrecy and didn’t tell her family that she was filming G&S. She stayed in a different hotel to the rest of the cast and crew in Cardiff to protect the plot. Can’t believe there were no leaks from the “extras” in the scene.

The Southampton scene was supposed to be filmed at Cardiff airport but permission was not granted.

Ruth Jones directed the Blackbird scene and was sobbing behind the camera.

The two extras who stood up on Sonia’s side did so spontaneously and Ruth and James decided to leave it in.

The final scene - the wedding party - was the last scene they filmed and the cast and crew were very emotional.

Brilliant. Loved it all the way through. DF was a lot confused but I suppose if you’ve never seen it before you would be. DD and I laughed a cried throughout.

I loved the way that Nessa had kind of softened over time, both personality and make up, hair etc. She came across as more vunerable.
Really enjoyed it, blubbed and laughed all the way through.

Uncle Bryn with the tie round his head at Pam and Micks party. 😂😂😂

Loved when Bryn and Nessa appeared the morning after all the drinking and she said she had been looking after him, "singing him some songs" etc. really tickled me.

It was nice for nostalgic reasons but the comedy writing was nowhere near what it used to be.

It was a bit naughty etc series one. It’s all got a bit family friendly and just a nod to old jokes of the past.

To be honest, the series 3 ending is probably where I will leave it in my memory.

Purplevelvetshoes · 25/12/2024 23:32

I turned it off as everyone looked really old - and that made me feel really old

I've watched all 3 series and Christmas specials in the last 2 weeks.
Yes it was a big jump from 2009 to 2019 in particular and a bit weird when watching it back to back.

Thing is though, the characters have all stayed the same and you grow to love them whatever they look like

Look at photographs of yourself from 20 years ago. You have probably aged too.

Easipeelerie · 26/12/2024 01:06

I much preferred it to the last Christmas special. It was lovely. Orange Pete was funny. Great to see Dave Coaches. Love the Nessa Smithy love story.
Bit odd that Pam and Mick didn’t look adoringly at the granddaughters they walked up the aisle but every other element was perfect.

JFDIYOLO · 26/12/2024 01:08

I thought the song choice was Neil The Baby making the first move to finally get his parents to sort themselves out!

It’s lovely that everyone kept the secret about Sonia’s involvement.

I remember reading about how Danny Boyle got everyone involved in the London 2012 opening ceremony to keep the details secret, including those who watched the final rehearsal in the stadium.

I had a feeling after the first few minutes that the bride wouldn’t be Nessa, but it didn’t occur to me it would be the awful Sonia.

Loved it perfect ending

Just watched it now. How lovely. I am very sad it's over.

Although. Why weren't Smithy's sister and mum there at the end?

I know right, and Smithy and Nessa’s son wasn’t there at the docks to see his mum and dad get together at last. I can only think that those actors weren’t paid to be on set on all the days or something like that as they’re not the core cast members.

Loved it though! perfect ending

Inertia · 26/12/2024 01:19

I might have missed this, but when Gavin and Stacey got on the bus to Southampton with their families, who did they leave in charge of their children?

It wasn’t a patch on the original series (neither was the last special) but there were some highlights. The script seemed funniest when it wasn’t trying too hard to make clunky references to how much time had passed. The names of Gavin and Smithy’s mates is still ridiculously funny. Loved that so many small roles came back. Rudi was a massive highlight as always.

Also thought they really nailed the trend in 2020’s weddings and hens, with the quizzes, the masks, the easel and the feature wall.

Seeing how much some of them have aged is depressing though 😄 Gavin and Stacey don’t even sound the same! And when Pam clapped her hands to her face to say “Oh My Christ” you could see her arthritic hand, gawd bless her.

I looked up the reviews on IMDB and was shocked at how many people seemed to hate it. There is little ground. People either giving 1/10 or 10/10

I thought it was absolutely perfect.

and I’m glad we never found out what happened on the fishing trip 😂

EmmaSmiff · 26/12/2024 01:30

Truth be told, in honour of Doris, we are all absolutely twatted on mince pie gin and we absolutely lovesed it we did. We didn’t make a salad either because we could not be arsed.

MrsHemswoth · 26/12/2024 01:39

I thought it was perfect 👌 I was terrified one of them would die as had heard some rumours and don't think I could have coped!! It was really lovey and my heart is full ❤️

I think the 1/10s are probably people who have caught the odd episode.
I've watched the whole 3 series in the last two weeks and this was by far a 10/10.

mrlistersgelfbride · 26/12/2024 01:41

It was wonderful. I'm not even a huge fan of the show but watched it out of curiosity and cried.
Bravo.
