I'm in tears. Maybe I'm just emotional but can't believe how much the show means to me

And the ending... tidy!

I just watched the documentary, the last few seconds after the credits is genius.

I loved the documentary.

Just watched the documentary. I’ve asked it before and will do so again - if James Corden is such a knob, why does Ruth Jones, who seems lovely, get on so well with him? Their strong relationship was very clear in the documentary.

He’s not - he’s nice. People judge without knowing him.

Loved the documentary! I really liked seeing their early writing being filmed, and I agree @LaBelleSauvage123, that you can see how fond of each other they are. I don't agree with the cynical people who believe they just wheeled it out again to rehab James Corden's image or make a bit of money - I think they'd probably made enough already to be fair. They have always come across as being passionate about telling the stories of the characters, seeing them as people living their own lives somewhere in another reality.

I loved how they talked about it having to be the end because Nessa and Smithy could never actually be shown together as a long-term couple, acknowledging what lots of people have said about them all along!

I watched the documentary but I can't remember anything after the credits. What have I forgotten?

Ooh what is the documentary please?

It was called “Gavin and Stacey: A fond farewell”. It’s on iPlayer, and was really lovely.

It showed Jason and Bryn on the fishing trip… but only them catching a fish, so we still don’t know what happened!

Wow I missed that! I'll have to watch the entire thing again 😊

No doubt Ruth and James will cook up something again soon in the ‘let’s pay off the school fees or pay off the mortgage for that second house in the country’ mindset.

Have you actually watched any of the programs? James Corden earns an absolute fortune now and doesn't need to do anything like this in order to pay school fees. Ruth Jones doesn't have children of her own anyway and I'm sure she paid off her mortgage a long time ago. It's such a nasty thing for you to say when both James and Ruth come across as really sympathetic characters. It makes you sounds really ignorant as well of what's going on in the world.

GuiltyPleasure · 02/01/2025 02:03

Really enjoyed the documentary. A fitting finale that imo showed the genuine affection the actors had for each other and the show. The fishing trip ending was a fab comedy touch.
Anyone else notice that when they showed the original script, the names were Gavin West & Stacey Shipman? Obviously they decided the surnames for the families worked better in reverse.

I can’t sleep so I’ve just watched the documentary and it was bloody brilliant! It made so much sense after watching the last episode just how much work went into it and I also got a really strong feeling that something has happened between JC and RJ at some point over the years, they have real chemistry. Maybe I’m just delirious with lack of sleep though 😭

Absolutely.

The poster you replied to sounds bitter.

They gave us the perfect last episode and in the documentary they all knew it was definitely the last one.

You do understand that people interact with others differently. How he relates to a co-writer is clearly different to how he treats waiting staff.

This last special was all about getting JC some good PR, because Smithy is a beloved character and yet he really isn’t liked.

He’s done nothing since he’s returned to the UK because of his bad rep. That’s all changed now with the G&S special. There’s talk of Disney and Amazon being interested now.

So….it worked.

Many people enjoyed it though.

So what if they did another one in the future? I don't think they will but no-one is forced to watch it.

I think they are very talented. I loved Stella as well.

Didnt he do a play in London with Anna Maxwell-Martin?

Snowmanscarf · 02/01/2025 16:57

Can someone tell me who Sonia’s dad was? I recognised him, I think, but not sure where from. I also think he looked a bit lost after walking down the aisle, and awkwardly walked to his place in the church.

TamiTaylorIsMyParentingGuru · 02/01/2025 18:36

Watched the documentary today and my goodness it was just lovely. I’m feeling quite bereft though - it feels so sad that there will never be any more. I felt that way after the finale on Christmas Day, but this documentary just sealed it. It feels like we’ll never see the cast talking about it again really either.

I’ve no idea - I vaguely recognised him too but he doesn’t seem to be named anywhere. I also recognised the actor who played Clayton but when I looked him up there is literally nothing I would ever have seen him in, so no idea why he was familiar

No, I can’t find his name anywhere either. Not on imbd , Wikipedia etc

This was how come Anna MM was in the finale. She and James were at the Old Vic for ages. I saw the play.,..he was fantastic in.

TennisWithDeborah · 02/01/2025 20:32

Tbh I can’t see either Ruth or Anna MM giving him the time of day if he were the sort to be rude to waiters etc. but obviously I don’t know.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 02/01/2025 21:11

I honestly couldn't care what people think of JC, the fact that RJ is loyal to him and the fact that he can write something as genius as G&S puts him way up in my esteem. He has a sense of humour, intelligence and a big heart and understanding of human emotions. And a sexy voice. I don't know what he is like in real life but I am very cynical when media turns on someone. People are vilified when it suits the narrative.
